(an extract from Probuditi!)

Calvin waited outside Trudy’s bedroom. Then it happened—a scream, a very loud scream. Calvin ran to his room and dived into bed.

He heard Mama coming down the hall.

“Did you do this?” his mother asked. Calvin looked out from under the covers. His mother stood over him, holding a rubber spider.

“Do what?” he asked.

“You put that thing in my bed,” Trudy told him, stepping out from behind Mama.

“Don’t think that just because it’s your birthday you can get away with something like this,” Mama scolded (責(zé)罵).

“You do want your present, don’t you?” That wiped the smile off Calvin’s face.

“Course I do,” he said.

“Then you apologize (道歉).”

Calvin dropped his head. “Sorry Trudy,” he muttered (嘟囔).

“Here,” Mama said. “Happy birthday.” At the breakfast table she handed Calvin an envelope. Inside were tickets to the matinee show of Lomax the Magnificent, the world-famous magician and hypnotist. “You’ve got two tickets there,” Mama said, “and I know someone who’d really love to go along.” She smiled at Trudy.

“You don’t mean here, do you?” Calvin asked, eyeing his little sister.

“Well, that would be really nice. But those tickets are yours. If you want to ask somebody—” Calvin didn’t wait for his mother to finish. He rushed out of the house to tell Rodney, his pal next door, that the two of them were going to see Lomax the Magnificent.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost mention recycling, which is the process (過程) of treating used things, such as paper or steel so that they can be used again. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more things than we need. We are now dealing with the results of thatover-consumptionin the possible greenest way, but it would be far better if we did not bring so many things home in the first place.

Here is an example. In the UK, the total of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a household’s waste. In many supermarkets, foods are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging causes serious environmental problems. The UK is running out of different kinds of ways for dealing with this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect (效果). Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The best way of avoiding this problem is to stop producing such unnecessary things in the first place. Food waste is another serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers (消費者) to buy more than they need. They seldom encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to connect packaging with quality (質(zhì)量). We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. Is it true for all the products? In fact, more and more companies realized the importance of protecting the environment. They try to package what really should be packaged, including products in good quality.

As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize how many unnecessary things are being collected. We need to face the waste of our daily life. Although many people have taken action to recycle, we have a high mountain to climb.

1.What does the underlined word “over-consumption” mean?

A.Making the environment green.

B.Recycling as much as possible.

C.Making more products than necessary.

D.Having more things than being needed.

2.What is the main purpose of the second paragraph?

A.To show the facts of over-used packaging.

B.To talk about the possible greenest ways.

C.To teach people how to do recycling at home.

D.To express worries about environmental problems.

3.What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?

A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

B.Other products are better packaged than food.

C.We can’t always connect quality with packaging.

D.Supermarkets should care more about packaging.

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Supermarkets should recycle first.

B.Packaging causes serious problems.

C.Needless things are mostly recycled.

D.Recycling should be done in the first place.

Exercise

When you exercise, your brain gives out a chemical called Endorphin (內(nèi)啡肽). This chemical makes you feel happy. That is why exercise is good for you.

Have a talk

If something or somebody is troubling you, don’t quarrel with other people to relax yourself. It is a good idea to have a heart-to-heart talk with a friend or a family member. Tell them your feelings. A chat is a useful way to make you feel better.

Stop and listen! What do you hear? You may hear many different sounds. Some of those sounds may be noise. Noise is a loud or unwanted sound.

Noise can be caused by many kinds of machines, such as motorcycles, jet planes (噴氣式飛機), farm tractors, and power motors. And, to some people, rock music is also a noise.

What happens to people who live near noisy machines or use them over a period of time? Doctors have found that these people have trouble in sleeping. And most importantly, constant (連續(xù)的) loud noise can cause loss of hearing.

Scientists use a unit of measure called a decibel(分貝) to measure the loudness of a sound. The sound of a quiet room, for example, measures 35 decibels. Talking measures between 40 and 65 decibels. Sounds from traffic and from some rock bands measure over 120 decibels. Noise at such high level causes the greatest hearing loss.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子是否正確,對的涂(A),錯的涂(B)。

1.According to the passage, noise is all sounds that you can hear.

2.A “decibel” is a machine that makes loud noise.

3.Loud noise can help people sleep better.

4.Not all people think that rock music is a noise.

5.We can infer (推斷) from the passage that noise is a serious problem.
