The Magical Brush (《神筆馬良》) is a Chinese cartoon movie directed by Frankie Chung. In fact, it is not the only movie about Ma Liang. In 1954 the Shanghai Animation Film Studio produced the movie called Ma Liang and His Magic Brush, and in 1955 the studio produced another movie called Magic Brush.

The story is a folklore story. In a village, there lived a boy called Ma Liang. His family was so poor that he could not go to school. However, he loved painting. One day, he got a brush. The brush had magical power—if he drew something with it, the picture would become a real one. This information reached a local office (官員). He put Ma Liang into prison (監(jiān)獄) and confiscated his brush. The officer asked Ma Liang to draw a golden mountain. Ma Liang agreed, but he also drew a big sea around the golden mountain. After the officer sailed across the sea, Ma Liang waved his brush and the officer fell into the sea.
