【題目】In our program, we explore(探究)the meaning of expressions in American English. We often take terms and examine them from "head to toe"------looking at each and every detail----making sure not to ignore(忽視) anything.
【1】While listening to this program, you need to stay on your toes. We will give one example after another. So, you' ll need to listen closely or you might miss something. Staying or keeping on your toes not only means to pay close attention. 【2】 This expression comes from the fact you are ready to jump off a ball into action. The phrase " keeping on your toes" is different from "tiptoeing around". When you are on your toes, you are ready to take action. 【3】 If you are not balanced, you are about to fall down. As we can see, "tiptoeing around" has something with being not direct. So, in American English, "to tiptoe around something" means to talk out something in an indirect (不直接的) way.
【4】 If we have some problems or do something wrong in our lives, our parents or teachers advise us not to avoid them. Instead, we should face them directly and bravely. 【5】
And that' s “Words and Their Stories” for this week. Thanks for listening.
A. But when standing on your tip toes, you are not very balanced.
B. Our parents or teachers may tell us, " Don ' t tiptoe around ! "
C. Speaking of toes, let ' s talk about them for a minute.
D. Here is an example of this expression.
E. It also means to be ready to act out.

【題目】On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax, they try something else-yelling(叫喊)at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.
It's too bad they don' t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.
No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something. I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the T V, the newspaper and my children. I've been known to shake my fist(拳頭)and yell at the sky at times. People like me can often be seen around us.
The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modem, educated people yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.
It doesn't do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn't usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.
【1】How do the Solomon villagers cut down a very large tree?
A. By using a special ax. B. By using the power of nature.
C. By using a mysterious power. D. By yelling at the tree for a month.
【2】From Paragraph 3 , we learn that the writer seems to be .
A. a kind man B. a nice father
C. a busy husband D. an impatient boss
【3】What does the writer think about yelling in life?

C. It makes machines work. D. It does no good to people.
【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Yelling can solve all problems.
B. Yelling at others will never hurt their spirit.
C. It ' s common for people to yell at things around them.
D. Solomon Islanders never use an ax to cut down trees.
【5】What does the story want to tell us?
A. Yelling hurts both sides. B. Everyone likes yelling.
C. Solomon Islanders are very stupid. D. Every living thing has its own spirit.

【題目】Do you know how many numbers there are in your cellphone number? Your cellphone number has 11 digits(數(shù)字). You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. China has the longest cellphone numbers in the world, longer than the US or Australia. Why is that?
The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communications Corporation and 186 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you which area the number is registered (注冊) in. And the last four digits are random. You may get the last numbers that you like or not.
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999.
Cellphone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted (聯(lián)系) for a long time , you may find its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit cellphone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. Countries like the US, Australia and India use cellphone numbers with 10 digits, Canada's cellphone number are perhaps the world ' s shortest. They use seven digits.
【1】Among the 11 digits, which digits can tell where the cellphone number is registered?
A. The first to the fourth digits. B. The third to the sixth digits.
C. The fourth to the seventh digits. D. The fifth to the eighth digits.

【3】Which country has the cellphone number with ten digits?

【4】What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. Cellphone numbers in Britain start with 0.
B. Cellphone numbers can be divided into 4 parts.
C. A canceled number can be reused after a month.
D. The cellphone number in Australia is the shortest.
【5】What ' s the best title of this text?
A. What the meaning of cellphone numbers is?
