【題目】It’s a sad story: someone keeps failing an exam for four years. It’s the story of Torobo, a robot from Japan.

Torobo has been trying to enter the University of Tokyo in Japan. The university, also called Todai, is one of Asia’s top universities. Since 2013, Torobo has taken the national college entrance exam with other Japanese students. However, the robot has failed to get the required (必需的) score for Todai every year. This year was no exception.

Torobo is part of a project called “Can a Robot Get into the University of Tokyo?” Japan’s National Institute of Informatics started the project in 2011. Torobo does not walk around. It is a robot brain that has arms to complete the test.

Researchers of the project want to find out what intellectual abilities (智能) will be replaced by machines. Results show that Torobo has grown in ability year by year. This year it got a score higher than Japan’s national average(平均分), which is enough to enter other good universities, but not Todai. With its big database, Torobo is good at solving knowledge-based questions and mathematical calculations (數(shù)學運算). That’s why it got good scores in physics, history and math. But Torobo has a hard time thinking independently (獨立地). As a result, it got weak scores in language and writing.

Luckily, after four years of suffering, researchers have decided to free Torobo from taking the test. They will grow Torobo’s ability in the fields it’s doing well in, so that it can be used in those industries(工業(yè)) in the future.

So while Torobo will never graduate from Todai, it can still look forward to a bright future!

1According to the story, Torobo is _____ while Todai is _____.

A. a university, a robot B. a robot, a university

C. a student, a computer D. a computer, a student

2We can tell from the story that Torobo _____ for four years.

A. has taken the college entrance exam

B. has failed the college entrance exam

C. has been studying in the University of Tokyo

D. has taught the college courses

3Which subject does Toboro NOT do well in?

A. Physics. B. Math. C. History. D. Writing.

4Which of the following is TRUE about Torobo?

A. Torobo can’t have a bright future because it will never graduate from Todai.

B. Torobo will go on taking the college entrance exam.

C. Torobo is useless to humans.

D. Torobo’s ability in the fields it’s doing well in will be better in the future.

5Why did Torobo get low scores in two subjects?

A. Because it cannot solve knowledge-based problems.

B. Because it is not good at mathematical calculations.

C. Because it cannot think independently.

D. Because it only has arms to complete the test.

【題目】What do you do if you’re trapped on a lonely

island (孤島)? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance (機會) of doing this is to make a passing plane see you.

Body signals (信號)

Pilots (飛行員) from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave () your arms up and down in a straight line, it means “yes”. When you point downwards and swing (搖擺) your arm

from side to side, it means “no”. If you want the pilot

to know that it’s safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (彎曲) your knees. If you want to say that it’s not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

Smoke signals

People can see the smoke from a fire from far away, so it’s a good way to make others see you. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control (控制). Never start a fire if you are not sure if it will cause danger. If the ground is dark, people can see light smoke more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.

Ground-to-air signals

It’s a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols (標記). If you can’t find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are: F “I need food and water.” II “I need doctor’s help.” I “I am badly hurt.” X “I am unable to move from here.”

1How many kinds of body signals does the writer talk about?

A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.

2Which picture means “it’s not safe to land”?

A.

B.

C.

D.

3If one is trapped on an island, he can _____________.

A. start a fire any time B. start a fire anywhere

C. start a fire when it is safe D. burn green grass and leaves anywhere

4What can we learn from the passage?

A. Swinging your arm from side to side means “yes”.

B. If the ground is dark, people from far away can’t see light smoke.

C. If you need some help from doctors, make a symbol “”.

D. You can use your body to make Ground-to-air signals.

5The reading mainly talks about _____________.

A. why we need to make signals on an island

B. it is important to make signals on an island

C. how to send out signals on a lonely island

D. how to get signals from a lonely island

【題目】Every place offers the possible dangers for getting hurt, even staying at work. We may face dangers like walking into desks or chairs, receiving unexpected cuts from a paper knife and so on. Industrial jobs have similar and more dangers like getting body parts hurt by machines or falling from a height.
No one wants to get hurt. Some accidents are avoidable(可避免的). Most accidents happen because of common things seen every day—an open desk drawer, a chair pulled out too far, water on the floor and so on. We slowly get used to these things we see every day and never think about what they could possibly become in the future.
Think about the following to prevent dangers to yourself and others:
1.If there is something you see and know may become a danger for yourself or others, do something about it. Close a desk drawer, clean up or put a sign over the water, turn off the power before leaving, and so on.
2.Get extra persons’ help and support on a task that is too hard for a single person.
3.Study the situation and think what could possibly happen and change if necessary. Do it before something happens and you won’t have to say some day, “ I should have… How sorry I feel…”
To use an old phrase “ Safety is everyone’s duty.” Looking down on it could lead to being hurt. Keep the rule in mind every day “ Everyone wants to go home in the same condition they came to work in –or better.”
