【題目】D

Do you and your friends ever talk about your dreams with each other? If you do, you might have noticed something interesting – some of your friends seldom remember their dreams, but some can always describe their dreams so clearly that it seems like they’re describing things that really happened to them. What makes those people different?

The answer is simple. There are two different types of dreamers – low dream recallers(回憶者)and high dream recallers.

Low dream recallers usually remember their dreams only twice a month. But high dream recallers are able to remember them about five mornings a week. And a new study suggests that activity in a certain part of the brain could have something to do with it, reported The Huffington Post.

Perrine Ruby, a French researcher at the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, studied 41 people (21 high dream recallers and 20 low dream recallers) and recorded their brain activity.

She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction (顳頂聯(lián)合區(qū)) was more active in high dream recallers than in low dream recallers – both when they were sleeping and awake.

This brain area collects and processes(編程)information from the outside world. This means that high dream recallers know more about what’s happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond (對……有反應) more strongly to hearing their own names, and when they are sleeping, they are woken more easily by sounds and movements.

By closely studying people’s brain activities, Ruby found that high dream recallers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low dream recallers do. And it is during these short times of wakefulness that the brain remembers dreams.

“The sleeping brain is not able to remember new information,” Ruby told The Washington Post. “It needs to wake up to be able to do that.”

This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experiences. If you are worried during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well, you will remember little in the morning, and this is because “you never get a chance to remember”, Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.

1According to the article, high dream recallers ______.

A. have very little brain activity during sleep

B. can remember their dreams clearly

C. don’t know how to describe their dreams

D. remember their dreams twice a week

2Compared to high dream recallers, low dream recallers ______.

A. have higher sleep quality

B. have more sleepless nights

C. are more easily woken at night

D. respond faster when hearing their names

3What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?

A. To show the advantages of being a low dream recaller.

B. To suggest what to do to become a low dream recaller.

C. To make readers interested in future studies.

D. To further explain Ruby’s research.

A British girl, Taryn Everdeen, has just finished writing a novel(小說)with her favorite writer, Carolyn Meyer, even though she is 66 years younger than her.

Taryn was only 15 years old, when she first wrote a fan letter to a 81-year-old Carolyn Meyer, to give thanks for her historical novels.

“Carolyn was one of my favorite writers. I grew up reading her books. When I was nine or ten, I would listen to her stories every night…That made me fall in love with history,” says Taryn.

Taryn, who is from Norwich, England, was then surprised when Carolyn wrote back and suggested writing a novel together.

Carolyn is an American writer who writes novels for children and young people. She has published(出版)over 60 children books, but she has never wanted to work with another writer until she got Taryn's letter.

Three years ago, after Taryn wrote to her, Carolyn invited the young girl to stay with her in the US, so they could write a novel together. They decided(決定)to write a time-traveling story. They sent ideas to each other by email. Carolyn also visited Taryn last year, and Taryn flew to the US over the summer, after she finished her school exams.

They now have a first draft(初稿)of "Mirror of Time". They decide to give it to some publishers and hope they will be interested in it.

"This is my first try at writing a novel. We have been working on it for three years. It's amazing, " says Taryn. And I have never met anyone like her. "She seems much younger than her age. I think she is a really powerful role model(有影響力的榜樣). She's my teacher, and my work partner, but I see her as a friend more than anything else."

Taryn, now 18 years old, returns from the USA this week. She wants to have a gap year(間隔年)before starting university next year.

“We worked hard, but we did other things together, too. While I was there, we went to a few theatre shows, and we went on a journey to Taos, staying in a hotel overnight there."

"She's very open, and I can talk to her about pretty much all the things I talk to my other friends about,” she says. "She has taught me how to be a better writer."

【題目】

Have you ever had dreams about building a robot? Or putting together a spaceship? Or even seeing your face made out of chocolate? Done. All you need is a 3-D printer!

The possibilities of 3-D printing seem endless. All the user has to do is to design an object on the computer and choose a material to print in. The printers print in hundreds of different materials including glass, sugar and even skin! When the user presses “print”, the 3-D printer spreads the material layer by layer and like magic the object is produced.

The first 3-D printer was invented in 1986 by an American, Charles Hull. But 3-D printing has only become cheap enough recently for most people to use. Designers now use 3-D printing to create unusual things. The Dutch artist Dirk Vander Kooj prints furniture made from old fridges. And doctors have used 3-D printing to print human body parts! The Telegraph reported in February that scientists from Cornell Medical College even printed a man-made ear.

But like a lot of new technologies, if 3-D printing gets into the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. In 2011 a group of four men in the US used 3-D printing to produce ATM skimmers. These were placed on an ATM and stole over $400,000 from users of the ATM. It is terrible to think that criminals* like them might one day use a 3-D printer to print a gun.

But for better or for worse, 3-D printing has been put into use. In a few years, you’ll probably be wondering how you could ever live without your 3-D printer!

1 invented the first 3-D printer.

A. Charles Hull B. Dirk Vander Kooj C. A doctor called Cornell D. Four men in the US

2What is the correct order for people to use a 3-D printer?

a.Choose a material. b.Press the print button.

c.The 3-D printer spreads the material. d.Use a computer to design an object.

A. abcd B. dabc C. acdb D. dcba

3The underlined word “ gets into the wrong hands ” in the fourth paragraph might mean in English.

A. the hands caught by the printer B. to get into trouble

C. the hands used in a wrong place D. to do something illegally

4What does the writer think of the 3-D printer?

A. It is necessary only for our work. B. It is too expensive for most people.

C. It is helpful but dangerous. D. It is useless in our daily life.
