【題目】
How are you getting on with your study? Maybe you are the best in your class. In the last few exams one or two even several classmates have got higher marks than you. How do you feel? Are you jealous of them? Are you grateful to them? Please think it over after reading the following text. You will probably learn a lot.
Once a zoologist worked on antelopes (羚羊) which were living on both sides of a river in the Republic of South Africa. He discovered that the antelopes on the east side multiplied (繁殖) more quickly and ran faster than those on the west.
The zoologist was puzzled after long thought about the difference. As two groups of antelopes lived in the same environment and they fed on the same kind of grass.
One year, with the help of the Animal Protecting Society, he caught ten antelopes on each side and exchanged them. A year later, the ten antelopes sent to the west bank multiplied by fourteen while only three of the ones sent to the east remained. Where are the other seven? They had been eaten by wolves!
At last the zoologist understood why the antelopes on the east were stronger. That was because on the east side there were living a group of wolves ---their natural enemy!
Now everything is plain sailing in your life. It's your opponents (對手) that you are improving indeed, so thanks must go to your opponents. It's a true!

【題目】 There was a kingdom long, long ago. It was ruled by king who loved riddles. Once a year the king made a new riddle. He gave a prize to the person who could solve the riddle.
There was a baker who also lived in this kingdom. Everyone agreed that he baked the finest breads. The baker had almost everything he needed except for a horse. If the baker had a horse, he could sell his fine breads from one end of the kingdom to the other.
One year the king made a new riddle that puzzled everyone. "I will give a prize to the person
who can solve my riddle, " the king said. Whoever wins will have the pick of one of my strongest
horses." He then drew a line down the middle of the courtyard "Make this line shorter without erasing(清除) any part of it,” the king challenged.
People came from far and wide. They looked at the line and squinted at it. They even put their
noses to the ground and scratched their heads.
How can you make a line shorter without erasing any part of it?” the people in the crowd asked each other. Some of them tried. The dressmaker kicked dirt(泥土)over the line to hide it. The farmer poured water over the line to make it disappear. None of these efforts worked, and the people went home disappointed. Everyone was puzzled about how to solve this new riddle.
A week passed, and nobody had any new ideas. Then one day the baker came into the courtyard with a bag of flour(面粉).
Your Majesty, "the baker said to the king, I can make your line shorter without erasing any part of it. "Then the baker opened his bag of flour. He poured out a line of flour right next to the king’s line. The line the baker made was longer than the king’s line.
Now, good king, "the baker smiled, "your line is shorter.

【題目】The Power of a Smile
I had an interesting experience at my children's school this week. About six months ago, a crazy father was driving his car half on the sidewalk at a fast speed along the road into the school. I was frightened and had a conflict (沖突) with him, telling him his driving was dangerous.
Two days ago, I was walking along the road into the school, actually a foot or so on to the road because the sidewalk was full of kids, and I saw this same man sitting at the wheel of his car about 10 metres in front of me. He looked at me angrily, started up the engine and speeded past me. So close to me that the car almost brushed my coat. It was obvious he did it purposely, to try to frighten me. I hit his car with my son's school bag hard as it went by. I called the police and they told me I should get his licence (執(zhí)照) plate number and they would go round and talk to him.
This morning I was walking up to the school gate with my kids and the guy got out of his car and walked up to me. I knew he was going to confront (對質(zhì)) me. "Next time I'm going to run you over," he said to me.
And for some reason I smiled. "You nearly ran me over two mornings ago." I said.
Then his manner suddenly changed, became less confrontational, "I'm not going to be dirty, because you smiled."
Did I? I didn't even realize that I had.
"I shouldn't have done it." he said. "I shouldn't have tried to make fun of you, by pulling my foot down so hard. I won't do it again. "
"Okay. Let's just stop it there then." I said.
He put his hand on my shoulder, and for some reason without thinking about it. I put an arm around him.
How strange! It shows how powerful a smile can be and how quickly conflict can turn to empathy (同理心), if you deal with it with a non-confrontational attitude.
