Most of us use alarm clocks to wake up at the right time for school or work. We look at our watches to know the right time for the bus or train. However, there is also a right time to eat, sleep, exercise, and take medicine, too. We can’t look at a clock for the right time for these activities. We must listen to the clock inside our bodies: the biological clock.

Barbara Wells exercised every morning. She woke up at 6:00 am. She ran about two miles before she went to work. But Barbara’s legs and back started to hurt. She did some exercises before she ran. But her legs and back still hurt. She ran slower, but the pain didn’t stop. Barbara talked to her doctor. The doctor said, “Don’t run in the morning. Try to exercise later in the day. That is the time when your body is at the right temperature for exercises after work.” Her legs and back don’t hurt anymore.

Today, doctors are learning more about chronobiology (時(shí)間生物學(xué)), the study of biology clocks. They are learning about the importance of time for our bodies. For example, it is best for people to go to sleep at the same time every night and to eat only when they’re hungry. Also, doctors discovered that some illness, such as heart attacks(心臟病), occur(發(fā)生)most often in the morning. This information tells them that the best time to take heart medication may be at night. When patients take heart medicine at night, they may prevent a heart attack in the morning.

Many doctors believe chronobiology can help us live healthier lives. It may be the right time to listen to these doctors!

35. Do we all have a biological clock inside our bodies?

36 How far did Barbara Wells run every morning?

37. How did Barbara’ legs and back get well?

38. What is the right time for a heart attack person to take heart medicine?

39. What can we learn from the passage?

In our life, we don’t often express our gratitude(感激) to the one who has lived those years with us. In fact, we don’t have to wait for anniversaries(周年紀(jì)念日) to thank the ones close to us --- the ones so easily overlooked(忽視). If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is time to give it now! While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it. Saying thanks is such an easy way to add to the world’s happiness.

Saying thanks not only brightens someone else’s world, it brightens yours. If you’re feeling left out, unloved or unappreciated, try reaching out to others. It may be just the medicine you need.

Of course, there are times when you can’t express gratitude immediately. In that case don’t let embarrassment(尷尬) sink you into silence--- speak up the first time you have the chance.

Once a young minister, Mark Brian, was sent to a remote area of Kwakiutl Indians in British Columbia. The Indians, he had been told, did not have a word for thanking you. But the Brian soon found these people had unusual generosity. Instead of saying thanks, it is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own, and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness. They do their thanks.

I wonder if we had no words in our vocabulary for thanking you, would we do a better job of communicating our gratitude? Would we be more responsive(反應(yīng)靈敏的), more sensitive, more caring?

31. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Helping each other. B. Caring others.

C. Expressing yourself. D. Thanks for everything.

32. What is the purpose of the writer in writing this passage?

A. Let the reader know the importance of expressing thanks in life.

B. Solve problems in life.

C. Praise thanks

D. Thank everyone.

33. Why does the writer give the example in the 4th paragraph?

A. It indicates (顯示,指出) the Indians did not thank you.

B. It indicates that thanking you exists everywhere.

C. It indicates the Indians didn’t know to thank you.

D. It indicates that Mark Brian got thanks.

34. What does the underlined word “l(fā)eft out” in the second paragraph mean?

A. go to another place B. give out C. be ignored D. leave for

As usual, Betty was sitting alone during break. As she sat, she heard a quiet “meow” nearby and found a little cat with a band showing the name “Lucky”.

She picked up the cat and went to ask her teacher if she could help the cat find his home as a class project.

“Are you willing to organize this project?” Mrs. Smith asked. She had tried for months to get Betty to speak up in class, but Betty had stayed quiet. Maybe this was her chance to shine!

Betty thought for a moment and then said, “Okay, we need to put up signs around the neighborhood and call the local newspaper.”

Tony also suggested that they call the Animals’ Home.

Soon students were busy drawing posters. Two students were making phone calls. Mrs. Smith was surprised to find Betty was so confident and really showed an ability to lead.

Betty, however, was not thinking about being a leader or being shy. Her mind was on finding this lost cat’s home.

The two students making phone calls came back and announced, “The Animals’ Home said that a family reported a lost cat named Lucky! They said they’d call the family to come and get him!” The class cheered.

Ten minutes later, a woman showed up and said with joy, “Thank you for returning Lucky! He was very ‘lucky’ to have been found by such a caring group of students!”

The class celebrated their success. Mrs. Smith celebrated, too. Betty sat comfortably with her classmates for the first time, laughing and joking. Mrs. Smith believed it was indeed lucky that Betty had found the cat—lucky for both of them!
