Kataria is the founder of the worldwide laughter movement. The celebration of World Laughter Day is a positive activity for world peace and is to build up a global sense of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. The first “World Laughter Day” gathering(集會)took place in Mumbai, India, on 11th January 1998. 12, 000 members from India and international Laughter Clubs attended it. Now there are about 5, 000 Laughter Clubs worldwide on all 5 continents.

“HAPPY-DEMIC” was the first World Laughter Day gathering outside India. It took place on 9th January 2000 in Copenhagen, Denmark. “World Laughter Day” is now organized on the first Sunday of May every year. Hundreds of people gather worldwide on that day to laugh together.

Today, the world has never faced so much unrest(動蕩)before. People are at war within themselves. Laughter is a universal language, which has the ability to unite humanity without religion(宗教). Laughter can build a common connection between various religions and create a new world order. So we believe that laughter and only laughter can unite the world, building up a global sense of brotherhood and friendship.

Studies also say that laughter helps your body do the following:lower blood pressure;reduce stress;work out the heart, especially for those who are unable to perform physical exercise. So in life, when you can laugh, you should laugh loudly and with your entire body—because it’s good for you.

Everyone knows you must exercise regularly to keep good health. Indeed, staying physically fit is a big part of our culture. We consider that healthy people are attractive people. Since most of us want to be attractive, there is no shortage of exercise clubs, training videos, magazines and books offering to help us stay physically fit.

Unfortunately, however, our culture doesn’t place the same emphasis(重要性)on mental fitness. Although we tend to like men and women with strong, healthy-looking bodies, we don’t have the same degree of respect or attraction for smart, educated, mentally healthy people. This is a pity, because there are great rewards for people who have developed the ability to think well.

If your mind is well trained and flexible, you will be able to understand a great deal of what happens around you. And if you are also well educated—that is, if you understand basic science, mathematics, music, art, literature, history and so on—you will find it much easier to make good decisions throughout your life. Over the long run, this leads to a sense of control over your destiny(命運(yùn))and a much better life than otherwise.

People who are poorly educated or who don’t think well—that is, people who are not mentally fit—see things differently. Their world is controlled by mysterious, often malevolent(惡意的)forces. Such people live within a system they will never master, forced to follow rules they will never understand. Although it may not be obvious, most spend their lives being manipulated by others. They are told what to do, what to think, how to spend their money, and what they should and should not aspire(渴望)to in life.

In my opinion, if you want to live well, you must be able to use your mind well. For this reason, I want you to be able to concentrate, to solve problems, to understand complex ideas, and to think clearly and quickly. Such skills will make it easier for you to make informed decisions, understand current events, choose good friends, manage your money well, make wise long—term decisions and appreciate music, art and literature.

The key to developing such skills is to enjoy learning, and to have the ability and motivation to teach yourself.

57. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The people who are not mentally fit often live a poor and mysterious life.

  B. Learning is very important for being able to make good decisions in life.

  C. If you like to learn music and history, you will be a mentally fit person.

  D. Physically healthy people are not as popular as mentally healthy people.

58. The underlined word manipulated means __________.

  A. controlled    B. influenced    C. effected      D. forced

59. What can be the best title for the passage?

  A. Mind Helps You More             B. Use Your Mind

  C. Make Informed Decisions          D. Train Your Mind

If you are asked to chair a meeting, remember the following six golden rules for meeting management.

Always start the meeting on time. If you begin on time, group members who show up late will realize the value of time. Beginning on time shows skill as an effective time manager and sets an example for others to follow.

Select a note-taker. You may need to refer back to something that was discussed during the meeting at a later date. Good record-keeping is a sign of a good meeting manager as well.

Learn to listen. So many times we think about what we are going to say and, in the process, miss important points that other group members may be contributing (做貢獻(xiàn)). Additionally, we often hear only what we want to hear, instead of really listening to other people. Meetings with effective listening are successful meetings.

Keep the discussion on track(軌道). Many times an important topic can get sidetracked in a meeting, especially when everyone has a different opinion about the topic. If an unexpected conflict(沖突) develops once the meeting is in progress, either ask a special group to look into the problem, or ask members involved in the conflict to meet with you after the meeting. Doing so will help keep the discussion on track and reduce the chances of wasting group members’ valuable time.

Give everyone an opportunity to be heard. Some people like to control meetings, while others wait to be asked their opinions. As the leader of the meeting, you need to keep an open mind and make sure everyone feels welcome to contribute and express ideas without criticism.

End on time. If you said the meeting would last no longer than one hour, make sure the meeting lasts for only one hour. Running late with a meeting makes members late for other appointments, increases the chances that the members will mentally leave the meeting and reduces your reliability as an effective meeting manager.

53. Why should we learn to listen according to the passage?

  A. To show respect to other members.

  B. To hear only what we want to hear.

  C. To get useful and important points.

  D. To save the members’ valuable time.

54. The expression “Give everyone an opportunity to be heard.” in Paragraph 6 means __________.

    A. every one can express their ideas freely without criticism

    B. the meeting manager shouldn’t speak a lot at the meeting

    C. everyone has the right to ask others opinions at the meeting

    D. all group members have to express their ideas at the meeting

55. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. Everyone should look back to what is discussed at the meeting later.

  B. The meeting should be ended on time or some members will leave.

  C. A meeting manager should let members discuss unexpected conflicts.

  D. If you start the meeting on time, late—comers may not be late next time.

56. The author’s main purpose of writing the passage is to __________.

  A. make everyone realize the value of time

  B. encourage people to have their own ideas

  C. advise people how to hold a meeting successfully

  D. give some advice on how to be an effective manager
