Reading is a very important skill. Reading is also an excellent way to improve your English. However, to make sure what you read isn’t too difficult, it’s important to know what makes passages difficult and how you can improve your understanding of them. Here are some suggestions:
Firstly, the way you read something depends very much on your purpose(目的) for reading it. The kind of reading you do in class or for your homework is different from how you read a novel(小說) for pleasure in the summer holidays.
Next, find something out about the topic(主題) you are going to read. The more background information you have, the easier it’ll be to understand the text. You can get this background information in your own language.
Then, of course, reading itself is an excellent way to improve your vocabulary(詞匯量), but there are many other things you can do. The more vocabulary you have, the easier your reading will be.
And finally, a common mistake(錯誤) is to read everything very slowly and carefully, looking up each unknown word. Sometimes this is necessary. However, it takes a long time and can be very boring, it can even make understanding more difficult! Using your dictionary correctly(正確地) is important.
If you’ve followed the above advice and still can’t understand a text, then it’s simply too hard for you. Stop reading and ask someone to help you. Nobody likes to give up, but you’ll just be wasting your time if you continue to work at a text that’s too difficult for you.
15. Is reading important for you?

16. How can you get background information?

Ever since I was a child, my mouth has caused me trouble. I’m not a bad person; I have just had a hard time learning when to keep my mouth closed.
My mom has told me again and again, “Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me. If you continue to be this rude, you will get into big trouble.”
It’s been a problem at school several times, too, when teachers have told me something I didn’t want to hear. I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself and tell them off.
One day in English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind me. It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual.
I said ever so nicely, “Nathaniel, would you be quiet?”
Nathaniel continued talking to himself. I quickly shouted, “Nathaniel, shut up!”
For the next five minutes, we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other.
“At least I don’t have an ugly lazy eye like you!” I shouted.
I knew this would bother him deep inside. It would hurt his feelings and shut him up.
What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab (抓住) me as he shouted, “That’s it! That’s it!”
Surprised at his reaction, I sat back in seat. Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before.
Later on, we were taken to the principal’s (校長) office.
There, the principal told us to discuss the matter. It wasn’t until then that I finally found that when I hurt someone physically, the wounds (傷口) eventually heal(痊愈). But when I hurt them with my words, sometimes the pain never goes away.
At the end of the discussion, I said sorry to Nathaniel.
When I headed back to my room, I spent some time praying (祈禱). I began to think about how often what I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me, He’ll tell me when to keep my mouth closed.

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? I’m sure lots of children of your age will say “Yes”. Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags.
Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them.“It’s hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it’s so heavy,” said Rick Hammond, an 11-year-old student in the US.
Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps(帶子)to carry them, but many other students choose rolling bags. But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags.
But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight.
Scott Bautch, a back doctor, said children under 4 should stay with 10%. But it is also important that older children don’t stay with over 15%, because their bodies are still growing. “Children are losing their balance(平衡)and falling down with their school bags.” He said.
Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin workbooks for students to take home.
One of the best answer is, as some children said, to have no homework at all!

“Get up, get up, Jim. It’s time to get up!” mother said while she was 35 me. I opened my eyes and looked at the clock. “Oh, dear! It’s a quarter to eight already. I’ll be late for school again,” I thought. I 36 out of the bed, washed my face, and then hurried to the bus stop without breakfast. As soon as I 37 the bus, it started running. “I’m sure I can get to school in time,” I said to myself. Suddenly the bus stopped. The bus driver got off the bus, then got on the bus again and said, “I’m sorry, ladies and gentlemen. There’s 38 wrong with the bus. Please get off the bus and wait for another one. ” “I couldn’t wait. The school is not 39 . I’d better run to school,” I thought, and then I began to run. But before I got to school, it began to 40 heavily.
When I 41 the classroom, I was wet shivering (發(fā)抖) with cold. The physics teacher had already begun his lesson. It was Mr. Smith. He was about fifty years old. All the students were a little afraid of him and so was I. I liked neither him nor his physics lessons. I hesitated (猶豫) for a moment, and then I opened the door. “I’m very sorry, Mr. Smith. I'm late again,” I said with a red face.
“It’s you again, Jim,” Mr. Smith said 42, “I’ve told you not to be late, but you... ” He suddenly stopped and looked at my wet clothes. He turned to 43 and said, “I’m very sorry, my boys and girls,” With these words he quickly took off his own jacket and handed it to me. “Now, take off your wet coat and put this one on, or you'll catch cold. ” he said kindly.
I went to my seat with Mr. Smith’s jacket on. It was a bit larger for me but I felt very 44 in it. I found, for the first time, physics was so interesting and how well I could understand it!
