　　Making friends is a skill, and the first thing is to know how to get along with others．

　　A popular shopping bag has been seen on the arm of some of the world’s most beautiful women．It sells at an official price of ￡5, but as much as ￡400 online．The bag called“I’m Not a Plastic Bag”is made of cotton．It is so“hot”that now everyone wants to get one．It’s fashionable, and it’s green!

　　Supporters see the bag as a way to move away from throwaway(一次性的)plastic bags that are given away in large numbers by supermarkets every year．

　　When the bags were first sold, about 500 people waited in line to buy one．So far, 20,000 of the popular bags have been sold at the second largest supermarket in Great Britain．It is one of the ways to encourage shoppers to use the reusable(可再利用的)bags, rather than the plastic ones．

　　The bag has also become a must-have for many famous people who want to be fashionable, and at the same time care about the environment．

　　The designer of the bag has been asked to develop the bag by the“We Are What We Do”group．The group believes that each person in Great Britain uses about 167 plastic bags every year．It says that small lifestyle changes can have a strong effect on reducing waste and the environmental pollution．It also says that everyone should try his best to protect the earth from being polluted．

　　Big ocean(海洋)fish have almost disappeared from the world since the start of business fishing in the 1950’s．The scientists found that the number of large fish has dropped by 90 percent in the past fifty years．The study took ten years．The researchers collected records from fishing businesses and governments around the world．The magazine Nature published the findings．

　　The scientists say the common way called longline fishing is especially harmful to large fish．This way includes many fishing lines that are connected to one boat．If these lines are joined together, they can reach one hundred kilometers．They hold thousands of sharp metal hooks to catch fish．Longline fishing is especially common in the Japanese fishing industry．Records showed that Japanese boats used to catch about ten fish for every one hundred hooks．The study says longline fishing boats now might catch one fish per hundred hooks．

　　The scientists say business fishing can destroy groups of fish much faster than in the past．The study suggests that large fish can disappear almost completely from new fishing areas within ten to fifteen years．Ocean life systems could be destroyed It’s not the only worry that the number of large fish is becoming smaller and smaller．What’s worse, they are smaller in size than their ancestors(祖先)．

　　Jin Jing, a 27-year-old torchbearer(火炬手), is known as a“smiling angel in a wheelchair”．Her right leg was cut off at the age of ten after a serious illness．She became a disabled fencer(擊劍手)in July , 2001．

　　On April 7, 2008, when Jin was to begin her part of the Beijing Olympic torch relay in Paris along the Seine River at 12∶30 pm local time, several“Tibet independence”activists(藏獨(dú)分子)rushed to her．A man tried to take the torch away from Jin before he was caught by French police．During the attack, Jin protected the torch with her body not to let go of it．

　　Where in the world can you take an hour’s train ride, and pass a forest, a London street, a scene from the Wild West, and a burning building that never burns down?There’s only one place, and that’s Hollywood, in California．The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets(布景)in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies(公司)in the USA．

　　A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and the stars．But they are only memories．Hollywood isn’t quite the same as it used to be．Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down．Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas．Instead, they repeat old ones．

　　The film industry is changing fast．Teenagers still go out to the movies．The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home．But older people mostly stay home to watch series, like Dynasty have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movies．These“soap opera”, as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes．But the actors and actresses are nearly all middle-aged, like many of the people who watch them．

　　Though it is soap opears that are keeping the film-makers of Hollywood in Business, big films are still being made in America．But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood．New York is the most important new center, but there are many others as well．Movie-makers have realized that they don’t need Hollywood any more．Modern cameras and real houses instead of expensively made copies in a studio．Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California．They are offering better working conditions and lower cost．

　　But Hollywood is fighting back．The state of California is trying hard to keep its best-known industry．

　　Yesterday the police were joined by more Yesterday the police were joined by more than 20 volunteers in the continuing search for the two missing teenagers, Vicky Gray and Tom Hunter, and their guide, Gavin Jones．The police said that they had disappeared during an adventure(冒險)tour of Cape York Peninsula．

　　This was the second day of the search and the police were now very worried about the safety of the three missing people．

　　The police said that thesearch had covered a wide area, but the rainforest was thick and their work was made harder by the recent rain．Later on Chief Inspector(警官)Roger Fleet said,“The travellers had a ridio with them．If they had been in trouble, they would have called us．”

　　The three travellers left Cooktown very early on Saturday morning in a Toyota car．They took a small dirt road that runs down to the Daintree River, a dangerous river full of crocodiles(鱷魚)．Chief Inspector Roger Fleet said the tourists wouldn’t have got into trouble if they had stayed on the main road．

We are often asked to make a speech in life．Most of us are afraid of it and don’t do a good job．Here are some simple steps to make your speech a successful one．First of all, find out everything you can about your subject and at the same time find out as much as you can about your audience．Who are they?What do they know about your subject?Put yourself in their shoes as you prepare your speech．Then try to arrenge your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow．Use as many examples as possible．Never forget your audience．Don’t talk over their headsor talk down to them．When you are giving your speech, speak slowly and clearly, look at your audience and pause for a few seconds from time to time to give your audience chances to think over what you’ve said．Just remember：be prepared, know your subject and your audience, say what you have to say and be yourself so that your ideas will bring you and your audience together．

　　I was cleaning out an old bos when an old card caught my eye: Queen City Casket Company．“What is it?”I wondered．I turned it over．There, in faded ink, was a hand-written address．Immediately my mind traveled many years back．

　　I was nine years old, walking down the cold and v．ot streets of Springfield, with a bag of magazines on my shoulder．That day, I came to the company finally, whose owner, Mr Rader, had always taken me there to ask his workers if they wanted any magazines．

　　Shaking off the rain like a wet dog, I went into Mr Rader's office．After a quick look he took me over to the fireplace．Noticing the hole in the top of my shoe, he said,“Come with me!”pulling me into his car．We stopped in front of a shoe store．Inside, a salesman fitted me with the finest pair of shoes I had ever seen．I felt about 10 feet tall when I got up in them．“We'd like a pair of new socks, too．”Mr Rader said．

　　Back in his office, Mr Rader took out a card, wrote something on it and handed it to me．With tearful eyes, I read,“Do to others as you would have them do to you．”He said kindly,“Jimmy, I want you to know I love you．”

　　I said good-bye, and for the first time I sensed a piece of hope that tilings would be better．With people like Mr Rader in the world, there was hope, kindness and love, and that would always make a difference．

Thuirsday, April 24th

　　We got to the clean, lovely city of Yangzhou early in the morning．This is our first trip to China．All the different smells attract our attention to the local food．We are going to try something special for dinner tonight．The hotel we are staying in is not expensive but very clean．We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to the Great Wall in the north．Sunday, April 27th

　　We visited the famous Slender West Lake which was crowded with visitors from all over the world, and bought a lot of toys for our friends outside the gate of the park．Everything is so colourful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already!Later today we will do the famous foot massage(按摩)and then leave for the Great Wall．We will take the night train north, stay in Beijing for two days, and then catch a bus to the Great Wall．Wednesday, April 30th

　　Our trip to the Great Wall was long and boring．We visited a small village in the mountains．Hie village people here love the quiet life．They are the kindest people I have ever met．They always smile and say“Hello”．Ralph and I can only speak a few words of Chinese, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness．
