　　Zhalong is a nature reserve in Heilongjiang in north-east China．It is one of the world’s most important wetlands．The reserve covers an area of 210,000 hectares．The area provides food and shelter for wildlife．It is an ideal home for different kinds of plants, fish and birds．

　　Many birds live comfortably in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round, while some only stay there for a short time．There are many fish in the wetlands, and the birds can easily catch them for food．Zhalong has long been called “the home of the crane”．There are 15 crane species(物種)in the world．8 of them are in China and there are 6 species in Zhalong area．It is an important living area for the rare red-crowned cranes．There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world．Every spring and summer, red-crowned cranes lay and hatch(孵化)their eggs in Zhalong．

　　Some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings．This means there will be less and less space for wildlife．More and more birds are in danger because they do not have enough living space．Many of them died．The Chinese government wants to protect these endangered birds, and they can be safe in Zhalong．

　　Every year, a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch birds．This year, members of our Bird-watching Club are going to study the different kinds of birds in Zhalong and the changes in their numbers．The study begins next month．

　　We _________ once a year．We are now inviting secondary school students to help．We need more people to help us count and do something to help the birds．

　　Many people do not understand the importance of the wetlands．We hope this information will help them understand and make them actively take action to protect wildlife．

　　How do you feel when you stay in hospital alone? Jenny, 13, a US student, feels bored．She knows the feeling because she has been in hospital many times herself．One day, she thought of an idea－if patients could get some books to read, they would feel better．So, from May, she and many of her friends began to collect books for hospital patients．

　　In six months the students collected 1,250 books at school．They decided to donate the books to the North Shore Medical Centre, a children’s hospital next door to their school．“There are books for kids of all ages, from babies up to high school level．” said Jenny．

　　The students put the books into “early readers”, “middle readers” and “advanced readers”．Then they wrote their best wishes to patients on bookmarks(書簽)and letters, put the books in big boxes and donated them to the hospital．

　　“We wrote things like, “Keep on reading!’ and ‘Hope you feel better!’,” siad John, 14, Jenny’s brother．“And we also wrote some funny things to make them laugh．”

　　Frank, 12, and Steven, 14, helped carry 16 large boxes of books into a car．“I think these books will make me a lot of patients feel happy．” said Frank．Steven shared his opinion．“It is really the most meaningful thing that I have ever done in my life．”

　　Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages．If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it．Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap(代溝)．

　　Try to reach a compromise(和解)．Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something．You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other．Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle．They argued over it．But they finally came to a compromise．Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days．

　　Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something．In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect(尊敬)to them．Showing respect will keep your relationship strong．

　Talk about your values．The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own．Tell your parents what you care about, and why．Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life．

　　A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person．It is worth having a try!

　　Get off the boat at Tower Bridge．Then you can see the Tower of London next to the bridge．The Tower of London is the city’s oldest palace．It is nine hundred years old．

　　Take the boat back along the river．Get off the boat and go past the station and walk along the street．Opposite is the old fruit and vegetable market．They don’t sell fruit and vegetables now．There are stores and restaurants, and lots of street musicians．Turn left into King’s Street, and go past the church．You’re now back where you started, at the square．Now you finish your tour．

　　A lot of teenagers are good at art at school, but how would you feel if people called you “the new Picasso(畢加索)” or if presidents and other famous people collected your paintings?

　　Alexandra Nechita was ten when her paintings became famous all over the world．She visited Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and her family’s native place(祖籍)Romania where 5,000 fans came to see her at the airport．Alexandra said, “When it all started, I was moved．It was very exciting and I loved the traveling, but I got very tired．And I missed home．”

　　Alexandra is a good student．Her studies always come first．She only starts painting after she’s done her homework．She works on two or three paintings at a time．The paintings sell for thousands and Alexandra’s parents have given up their jobs to work for their daughter．Life for the Nechita family is very different from what it was like a few years ago．

　　Alexandra’s father Niki left Romania for political reasons in 1985．At first he tried his best to learn English and had different kinds of low-paid jobs．In 1987, he brought his wife and Alexandra, who was then 18 months old, to America．The family was very poor．Alexandra began to draw at the age of three．

　　She was drawing for four or five hours a day．Soon people offered to buy her paintings and she had her first art show at the age of eight．Stories about this child appeared in the newspapers and television．They now live in a large house with a swimming pool．Her mother said, “We started without anything, but thanks to Alexandra, we have everything we ever dreamed of．”

　　Alexis Rocha is a 13-year-old boy from California, US．He weighs 147 pounds(67 kg)．But six months ago, he weighed more than 202 pounds(91 kg)．How did he lose all that weight in only half a year?

　　“One day, I was surprised to find that I weighed about 200 pounds,” Rocha says．“I thought I had to do something．”

　　Rocha is from a boxing(拳擊)family－h(huán)is father and two older brothers are professional boxers．So he decided to start boxing．He began with simple exercises, like sit-ups and push-ups(俯臥撐)．Then Rocha started jogging(慢跑)．“No kid likes running,” he says．“I don’t want to do it, either, but I have no choice but to keep on．”

　　Months later, Rocha joined a boxing club in his city．He is always the first kid at the club to begin exercising, and the last to leave with sweat(汗水)on his face．Every day he boxes for about three hours．

　　“Rocha works very hard,” says his coach, Hector Lopez．“It’s surprising to see him lose the pounds so quickly．I’ve never seen anything like this in my 20 years of coaching．”

　　Rocha is very happy with his weight now．There is a family photo in his room from 18 months ago．“Each time I look at the photo, I laugh at myself．I was so big back then,” Rocha says．“I look 100 times thinner and 1,000 times stronger now．”

　　According to the Ministry of Public Security(公安部), police caught more than half a million drunk drivers last year, a 68 ％ increase from 2009．

　　The new law sees drunk driving as a crime．

　　In the West, drunk driving is also a crime．

　　In the US, for example, if the police catch a drunk driver, the driver will pay a fine, lose his or her license(駕照)and even go to prison．If the driver wants to drive again, he or she must do public service, and take part in educational programs．

　　You may think：drunk driving is a crime? Isn’t this law too unkind? But experts say：not at all．

　　“It is to protect people’s rights to life and health,” Li Gang, lawyer in Chengdu, told China Daily．“Drunk driving is very dangerous．No matter what the results are, it should not be allowed．”

　　Now cities are full of cars．Some families even have two or more cars．Parking(停車)is a great problem, and so is the traffic in around the cities．Something will have to be done to change it．What will the cars of tomorrow be like?

　　Little cars may some day take the place of today's big cars．If everyone drives little cars in the future(將來)there will be less pollution(污染)in the air．There will also be more space for parking cars in cities, and the streets will be less crowded．Three little cars can fit(適合)in the space now needed for one car of the usual size．

　　The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive．Driving will be safer, too．What is more, these little cars can go about 65 kilometers per(每)hour．

　　Little cars of the future will be fine for getting around a city, but they will not be useful for long trips．If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets of roads will be needed in the future．Some roads will be used for the big, fast cars, and other roads will be needed for the slower small ones．
