　　Nat lived in a small town in England．He always stayed in England for his vacation, but last year he thought, “I’m never outside this country．All my friends go to Spain, and they like it very much．So this year I’m going there, too．”

　　First he went to Madrid(馬德里)and stayed in a small hotel for a few days．On the first morning he went out for a walk．In England people drive on the left, but in Spain they drive on the right．Nat forgot about this and when he was crossing a busy street, a bike knocked(撞)him down．

　　Nat lay(躺)on the ground for a few seconds and then he sat up and said,

　　“Where am I?”

　　An old man was selling maps at the side of the street, and he at once came to Nat and said, “Map of the city, sir?”

　　A girl complained to her father about her hard life．She didn't know what she had to do and wanted to give up．She felt tired of fighting and fighting．One problem had been finished but another came over．

　　Her father, a cook, took her into the kitchen．He poured water into three pans and boiled(煮沸)them．After boiling, in the first pan was put some carrots, the second was put some eggs and the last was put with coffee．

　　The girl waited impatiently(不耐煩的), confused by what her father did．About 20 minutes later, her father took out the carrots and put them in a bowl．He took the eggs and put them in a bowl．After that the coffee was poured into a cup．“My sweet heart, what do you see? ” he asked．

　　“Carrots, eggs and coffee, ” she replied．

　　Her father told her to close her eyes and asked her to touch the carrots．She did so and felt that the carrots were soft．After that he asked her to take the eggs and break them．After peeling(剝開)them, she got the eggs, cooked and hard．The last, the father let her smell the coffee．She asked, “What did you do this for, Father? ” He explained that each had the same unlucky experience－the boiling water, but each had a different result．The strong and hard carrots had become soft and weak．The fragile eggs became hard after being cooked．The coffee was very special, they could change water．“Who are you?” asked her father．“When bad luck knocks at your door, what is your decision? Are you carrots, eggs or coffee? ”

　　I love to tell the story about how I met my best friend－Tiger．We met at the school fair(集市)．Each year, all the fourth-grade classes hold a school fair．Everyone in fourth grade works at the fair．Some sell ice cream, drinks and snacks．Others take care of the little children who ride the rides．

　　I got the second job and I've never regretted it, because that's where I met Tiger．My job was to help little children get on the back of a little horse．I kept telling the children to wait their turn and holding ice cream for them while they rode about．One thing was clear to me．I was growing older and should be more responsible(負責(zé))．

　　Suddenly, a boy came to the horse．He took the little horse's reins(韁繩)! The horse stopped, and the girl on its back started to fall．I was trying to reach the girl when I saw Tiger go by my legs．It held the horse's reins and pulled the horse away from my legs．I caught the girl just before we both hit the ground．The girl sat on top of me．She was laughing at the ice cream on my face．The horse's reins were in Tiger's mouth!

　　Thanks to Tiger's fast action, I saved the little girl．We were both heroes．And Tiger, the fastest dog I've ever known became my new best friend．

　　After a study showed that one in every ten meals in the country may be cooked with dirty oil, the State Fool and Drug Administrations(SFDA)on Thursday issues an emergency notice(發(fā)布緊急通知)to restaurant nationwide, warning them against recycling oil．

　　The swill-oil is cooking oil refined from kitchen waste that has been recycled．Although it looks clean and clear, it's actually so dangerous to people's health that it may cause cancer．

　　According to a reporter, the swill-oil business is extremely profitable．Recycling one ton of kitchen waste will produce130 kg of swill oil．With its price being half that of normal cooking oil, a profit(利潤)of 1.5 to 2 billion yuan is produced in the whole swill-oil business in the country every year．The profit is almost 200％, so it's easy to understand why the business is so hot．s

　　He Dongping, a professor from Wuhan Polytechnic University(WHPU)said："To stop the use of dirty oil should start at its source, kitchen waste．And the first step is to find a good way of collecting kitchen waste．" "However, it might take about 10 years before China could solve the problem completely．"he added．

　　More have heard of the American Prom．This is the senior students' school leaving party．The British name for the event is a Leaver's Ball or Leaver's Dinner, although some UK schools call them Proms, too．In Canada, Ireland and Australia the terms Grad or Formal are most common and in South Africa it is called a Matric Dance．

　　Some Matric Dances in South Africa still follows the old British traditions．Before the dance, pupils are given lessons in dancing．School leavers invite a partner to the dance．The girls have dresses especially made for the event．To save costs the dance is often held din the school hall．

　　American Proms have become elaborate(精心的)and expensive, complete with luxury hotel ballrooms(豪華的酒店舞廳)，live bands and expensive prom dressed．They now include after-Prom activities that often extend into the early morning of the next day．

　　The Leaver's Ball in the UK is not so formal(正式)．The girls also wear ball gowns and the boys suits．A dinner and disco will be held at a a local hotel．Each pupil buys a ticket and can go with a partner or just arrive with friends．

　　The expression“go for it”comes from football．Not football as it played in most countries, but the kind of football in the Unites States and Canada．

　　American football is a difficult game to explain．But the basic idea is that each team tries to move the football across the goal line of the other team．One of the rules is that a team must move

　　the ball forward(向前)at least ten yards-a little less than ten meters-in four attempts．It loses the ball to the other team if if fails to move that far．

　　One of the most exciting times inn football comes when a team has failed, after three attempts, to move the ball forward ten yards．Then the team must tale an important decision．

　　One choice is to try a fourth and final time．If the team succeeds, it keeps the ball．And continues to move forward．But if if fails, the other team gets the ball at that place on the field．

　　The second choice is to kick the ball．The team gives up the ball if it makes this choice．But a good kick can put the other team at the far end of the field, making it more difficult for that team to score．

　　People watching a football game are certain to shout their advice．Some will shout, “Kick the ball!”But others will urge the team to take a chance, to live dangerously．“Go for it!”they will shout．

　　Chris is not a traditional explorer(探險家)－h(huán)e usually works in an office for a large organization．However, Chris' job can be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer．

　　Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as．Doctors Without Borders．Since1971, MSF has sent trained doctors all over the world to help people who have suffered from disasters(遭受災(zāi)難), such as wars and illnesses．Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to many places to organize programs that help people．

　　At the moment, over 27,000 trained doctors have taken part in MSF projects．The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999．All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF．They need to be ready to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should face difficulties．Most of MSF's work is in Africa．When MSF chooses a doctor for a task, they have to go for at least six months．When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency(緊急的)task following a disaster, such as an earthquake．

　　But why would doctors leave a comfortable life and a good pay to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience they have is a great help in their life．What's more, just like the explorers of the past, they need to keep an open mind and learn to get on well with the people they meet．One thing that they can say at the end of any task is that they have made a real difference to people’s lives．
