When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cold. Why? The sun makes the earth hot but it can not make the water very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth goes up. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When it moves in, you feel the wind. And the wind makes you cool.
Of course, scientists can not answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why is the ocean full of salt?” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks(斷裂). Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean?” The ocean does not get more salty every year. Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.
We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.

What do you do if you are hit in the mouth and one of your teeth is knocked out? A dentist(牙醫(yī)) may be able to put the tooth back in for you, but you have to get to the dentist first. In the meantime, you have to store the tooth so that it will stay healthy. The simplest thing to do is to put the tooth back into your mouth, or you could put it in milk. Frank Courts, a dentist at the University of Florida, worked with other researchers to find the safest way of keeping knocked-out teeth. He tried putting teeth into milk, into water, and into cell-culture medium(細(xì)胞培養(yǎng)液). He also tried just drying the teeth in the open air. He used teeth that had to be removed from people's mouths for various reasons. The teeth were put into one of the solutions(溶液) or stored in the air for one hour. Then cells from the root of the teeth were scraped off the teeth. Dr Courts and the others then studied how healthy these cells were.
The cell-culture medium worked best to keep a knocked-out tooth healthy outside the mouth. However, few people keep cell-culture medium handy at home or in school. The next best thing was milk. But Dr Courts said that the best thing of all was to wash the tooth and put it right back into its socket(牙槽) in the mouth. For some peoplet, though, this is just too painful or upsetting. So milk will do, until you get your tooth (and your mouth) to a dentist.

[ ]
A.milk works better to keep the tooth healthy
B.milk causes less pain

A man once said how useless it was to put advertisement in the newspapers “l(fā)ast week,” said he, “my umbrella was stolen from a London church. As it was a present, I spent twice its worth in advertising, but didn't get it back.”
“How did you write your advertisement?” asked one of the listeners, a merchant.

It is difficult for parents of nearly every family to teach their children to be responsible for homework, but with one of the following suggestions, you really can get your children to help at home.
You give your children the impression that they can never do anything quite right, then they will regard themselves as unfit or unable persons. Unless children believe they can succeed, they will never become totally independent(獨(dú)立的).
My daughter Carla's fifth-grade teacher made every child in her class feel special. When students receive less than a perfect test score, she would point out what they had mastered and declared firmly they could make up what they had missed. You can use the same technique when you evaluate(評價) your child's work at home. Don't always scold(責(zé)罵) and give lots of praise instead. Talk about what he had done right, not about what he hasn't done. If your child completes a difficult task, reward(獎勵) him with a Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad.

Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don't agree with them.
Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources(資源), we are short of(缺乏) others, for example, fresh water(淡水). In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps(水龍頭) when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. We all cry for water when we are thirsty. But do you know, in very hot, dry weather, plants also make very low sounds-as if they are crying out for help?
You see, in a plant's stem(莖) there are several hundred “water pipes(管道)” that bring water from soil all the way up to the leaves. When the ground turns dry, it becomes harder and harder for plants to do this.
In very hot days, plants have to get any water that it can. Scientist Robert Winter has found out that when plants can get no water, their “water pipes” snap(發(fā)出斷裂聲). When that happens, the whole plant vibrates(振動) a little. The snapping pipes make noises ten thousand times more quiet than a whisper(低語).
Robert knows that healthy, well-watered plants are quiet. He also knows that many insects(昆蟲) prefer attacking dry plants rather than healthy plants. How do the insects know which are healthy plants and which are not? Robert thinks that the insects may hear the plants crying and then they may come to kill.
1.There are many “water pipes” ________.
[ ]
2.When plants can ________, their “water pipes” snap.
[ ]
3.When “water pipes” snap, the whole plant ________.
[ ]

D.makes very loud sounds
