My class will put on a short play in English at the end of the year. Yesterday our English teacher gave us copies of the play.
“Choose a character in the play whom you’d like to be, ”she told us. “This afternoon learn a few lines of this part for homework. Then tomorrow you can say those lines in front of the class. Ill decide who play each part.”
I wanted to have one of the bigger parts in the play, so I choose the part of the king. He has a lot of lines to say. I learned them by heart.
This morning in our English lesson we had to say our lines. I acted the part of the king. When I said my lines, I put a lot of expression into my acting. I thought I acted really well.
Everyone in the class read a part and then the teacher who would play each part.
Many of the students in my class couldn’t act at all. They couldn’t even read without making lots of mistakes. I was sure that I would get a big part in the play.
However, the teacher gave me the part of a soldier. He has only one line. It is, “Yes, sir!”
I was very disappointed. At the end of the lesson I went up to her and asked her why I had such a small part.
“You put too much expression in your acting,” she said. “Good acting is not big acting. It is acting the audience can believe in.”
I think I know what she means.

Most middle school students wear uniforms. Some students like uniforms, but others don’t. However, recently, a Japanese government survey(政府調(diào)查) shows that more students in Japan like uniforms now because school uniforms are more fashionable(時(shí)尚的) than they were before.
I surveyed some Japanese students about what they thought about school uniforms. I asked them, “Do you like fashionable uniforms?” There were lots of different opinions(觀點(diǎn), 看法).
Hiromi said, “I like school uniforms because I don’t need to choose clothes every day. I think that fashionable uniforms are good. My high school uniform is fashionable, but there is a problem. Fashionable uniforms are too expensive.”
Miki said that she didn’t like fashionable uniforms because she didn’t want to spend too much money on uniforms. She thought that the uniforms should be changed(被改變). They should be cheaper and easier to get.

Dear Nancy,
You asked about places to go and things to do in our town. The Downtown Mall is always 1. It’s a2place in the oldest part of town. There are some good stores and restaurants there.3, Trendy Clothing Store is in Downtown Mall. It’s a fun place to shop, and it has the4quality clothes. The shop assistants are friendly5people. My favorite 6in town is Nick’s Restaurant. It is close to my house. It’s cheap and the hamburgers there are great. I like Dragon City Restaurant, 7. You can eat wonderful noodles there and the beef noodles are the most delicious! You must try the dumplings there, too. But it’s more expensive than Nick’s. The Big Cinema is the best cinema in town. It has the biggest screen and the most8seats. The Del Ray Complex is also a good place to see movies. It doesn’t have the9movies, but the tickets are the cheapest.
Anyway, there are lots of things to do and to see here. Come for a10soon!
Love,
Kate
