―、閱讀理解

When you're packing for an adventure, what's the most important thing you'll need? If you don't want to

get lost, you'll need a map! Or better yet, a GPS. What about other animals, how do they know where they're going? While humans depend on technology to travel, some animals have something far more advanced. Some American scientists found that Chinook salmon (鮭魚)have a "built-in GPS" of the Earth's magnetic field (磁場).This means as soon as they are born they are able to direct themselves in the ocean (海洋).It acts like a big map inside their brain.

Scientists placed some baby salmon into a big swimming pool. To simulate the Earth's magnetic field, they put magnetic coils (線圈)all around the pool. Then, by changing the direction of the coils, the salmon began to change their own direction. They started to face in the direction of their ocean feeding area. This is a safe place in the ocean where salmon can find food to eat. When the scientists changed the coils to the opposite side, the salmon also turned in the opposite direction. Just by using their "built-in GPS", the salmon were able to find out the direction of their feeding area.

How did Chinook salmon get their "built-in GPS"? The scientists believe that their navigation (導航)skills came through evolution (進化).The fish that were able to reach the feeding area lived longer.

(   )1. According paragraph 2, Chinook salmon_____________ .

A. have their own magnetic field  B. learn directions from their parents

C. can find directions in the ocean   D. have the same navigation skills as humans

(   )3. The article mainly talks about_____________ .

A. the wide use of the GPS  B. the evolution of the Chinook salmon

If you come from a poor family and couldn’t go to a good school, could one book change your life? It did for Srinivasa, a bright young Indian boy. When he was 15 years old,he found a book about math. It was a book with 6,000 very difficult problems. While his friends played football on the road in front of his house, he worked out the answers to these problems. He answered them all by himself 一 without any help from anyone else. Then he thought of new problems and answered them too. Soon he was better at math than all of his teachers.

A year later, Srinivasa was invited to study at university (大學),even though he was really too young. However, he failed most of his exams. Why? Because he was only interested in math and didn’t care enough about his other subjects. He wrote about his ideas and sent his work to magazines. A British mathematician (數(shù)學家)read his work and started writing letters to him. Later, he invited Srinivasa to go to England to study and work.
