The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and slightly wet,and the street lamps gave little light.

Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the pavement (人行道) . When he reached the middle of the bridge he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began walking more quickly. Then he slowed down again, feeling shame at having acted so foolishly.  Two years ago,I bought my girlfriend Nicole a pair of fur earmuffs (耳套) .She loved the gift and she wore them every day.

Last week,Nicole was on her way home from work, taking the New York City subway. The train stopped at Union Square. As Nicole stepped through the subway door, the earmuffs fell from her head, and dropped on the rails (鐵軌) below. Nicole was upset. "Dot't go down to the rails," somebody shouted to her. Good advice. Union Square is a busy station, with trains running past nearly every minute, and there's electricity running through the rails.

Nicole walked up to a subway worker and explained what had happened. "Sony,I can't help you," the worker said. "Maybe you could use a stick or something to fish it out." Where would she get something like that at the subway station? Disappointed,Nicole walked back to where the earmuffs fell. A homeless man was sitting right near the place. Nicole didn't notice him there earlier. Next to the man was a small box, full of various (各種各樣的) junk he had collected. " Excuse me," Nicole said, "but you don't have a stick by any chance,do you? My earmuffs fell...”

The man looked at his things and pulled out a long wooden stick. He went to where the earmuffs fell and used the stick to reach down to them. It was difficult to do so,and he had to stop when a train was coming, but the man didn't give up. At last,he got the earmuffs onto the end of the stick and brought them back up to Nicole.

Nicole was grateful. She also said she would give the man some money for helping her. But the man said there was no need to do so. Last Week was Road Safety Week at Trudy's school. All the students had to attend a talk on road safety which was given by a police officer. This is what the police officer said.

"Most traffic accidents should not happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too quickly. This means that when they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid hitting other vehicles or people. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalks. It's not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot― pedestrians―and bicycle riders, often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look in both directions before stepping into the street. Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should look backwards to make sure there aren't any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should signal with your left hand to show that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear. The rules of the road are very simple. If we learn them and obey them,we whould not have accidents any more."

An American group developed the rooftop gardening in the early 1980s. The group is known as ECHO. This idea was to help people living in cities who did not have land to grow vegetables. And now it is becoming more and more popular in many other countries.

To build a rooftop garden four things are necessary. You need a roof strong enough and four pieces of wood to build a box. Grass cuttings in which to plant your garden and a thin piece of plastic on which to put the cut grass are also necessary.

Begin by testing (檢測) your roof to make sure it is strong enough. Cut and collect some grass. Cover the roof with a thin piece of plastic. Then you build a box from the four pieces of wood. The box has no top or bottom. It should be about 8cm deep. It can be as long and as wide as needed. Put the box on the plastic. Then fill it with the cut grass. Water the grass and push it down by walking on it. After about three weeks the rooftop box is ready for planting.

Put the seeds directly into the wet grass. It is important that the grass is kept wet until the plants begin to grow. When the plants are growing, you will need to water them every day unless it rains. And birds must be prevented from eating the seeds or new plants. They will also need some liquid fertilizer^液體化肥) .You can make your own liquid fertilizer if you can get wastes from chickens. Put the chicken wastes in a cloth bag. Then put the bag in a big container (容器) of water. After about one week, the water becomes a good liquid fertilizer.

The rooftop garden is a good place to grow peas, tomatoes and onions. If the box is deep enough, potatoes and carrots also will grow.

(   ) 8. After planting the seeds,grass must be kept         .

   A. wet   B. dry   C. warm   D. cool

(   ) 9.        is not necessary if you want to take care of the planted seeds.

   A. To fill the box with the cut grass

I think people should do more things online at home. Why pollute the   air  ( by driving your car to the supermarket when you can order your weekly   shopping on the Internet? You can also book holidays as well.                                          Posted hy Billy on June 1 1th 7 :.36 a.m.

I try to use public transportation whenever I can. I take the bus to   college         and walk home. When my mum wants to give me a lift, I always refuse,  as I can get   there quickly by bus. Also, the buses in my town arc electric, I so they are environmentally friendly !

Why not use two   wheels? Any motorcycle will use less fuel (燃料)than a car. You don't get caught in traffic jams either ! But in my opinion, the   best things are bicycles. They don't   produce any pollution and help you to       keep fit at the same time.
