Height is just one of the features your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you with a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall too. But if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be,ask your doctor if he or she can help you find them out.

But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential. Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.

It’s natural that you’re wondering how fast you should grow. There's no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 6 cm a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty.

Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. 2 cm here and 3 cm there make a little difference to the height you’re at now. How have you been growing up to this height? What other changes may your body be going through?

Don’t be amazed if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt (高峰) during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later —between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.

You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.

(C) Why do we like drinking water from plastic bottles? Some people think it is healthy and clean. Others drink bottled water because it’s easy —you can carry it around with you.

In hot countries, likeGreece,we often buy bottles of cold water in summer.

However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all,we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a ^source of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made,we wouldn’t need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we recycled all our plastic bottles,we wouldn’t need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece,we don't recycle much of the plastic we use. In 2006,Greeks recycled only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and seas.

So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you recycled it,you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn’t a recycling bin near you? Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again.   Everything that humans hear is in the form of sound waves (波) . Just as the eye sees colours in the form of light waves. The ear and the eye turn these different waves into signals that the brain can make sense of.

The ears and the brain have an amazing ability to recognize (識(shí)別) particular sounds. For example,a mother can often tell when her baby is crying even if there are other crying babies in the same room. This is because the sound of her baby crying has a special meaning to her and the brain has recorded its importance.

The ability to recognize sounds improves with experiences. As the brain receives information about sounds from day to day,it stores the information in its memory. When the brain hears new sounds,it gives meanings to them based on the information already in the memory. This is why certain words or songs can make a person happy. Often it is not the words or songs themselves that cause this feeling. The sounds are connected to happy memories for that person.

Another hearing process controlled by the brain is to decide where a sound is coming from. One ear is usually closer to the source of a sound than the other ear is. Sound waves are stronger when they reach the ear that is closer. They also reach the closer ear first. The brain recognizes these differences and uses them to decide the location of the source of the sound.
