Sometimes a part of us must die before another part can come to life. Even though this is a       and necessary stage of our growth, it is often painful or       if we don’t realize what’s happening. In fact, confusion is often the       that tells us a change is taking place within us. These changes happen throughout the lives of all humans, as we move from babyhood to       to teenage years and beyond. With each change from one       to another, we find ourselves       goodbye to an old friend, the identity (個性,身份) that we       in order to move through that particular time.
Sometimes we shape these identities in relationships or jobs, and when we change, those areas of our life become      . Usually, if we take the time to look into the changing surface of things, we will find that a change is taking place       us. For example, we may go through one whole part of our lives creating a protective shell around ourselves       we need it in defense of ourselves. One day,      , we may find ourselves feeling limited and bored, wanting to move outside the       we used to need; the new part of ourselves cannot be born within the       of the shell our old self needed.
We may feel a strange       of excitement and sadness as we say goodbye to a part of ourselves that is       and make way for a whole new identity to       in its place. We may find inspiration in working and studying when we think of the image of an animal who sheds (蛻毛;蛻皮) in order to       way for new skin, fur, or feathers to      . For example, keeping a piece of snake skin, or some other symbols of change, can       us that death and rebirth are simply nature’s way of growing. We can give in to this process, letting go of our past self with great love and gratitude, and       the new with an open mind and heart, ready for our next stage of life.

The main      why I admire him so much is that he is determined to lead a       life, in spite of his physical difficulties he has to overcome. Although his       prevents him from going to school, he gives himself an education by studying at home. Adventure is in my blood. And I had been considering how I was going to celebrate my high school graduation. I didn’t just want a small    in the backyard. I started thinking about doing a solo    somewhere out of the ordinary. I took out    and drew the 1,500-mile route along which I would be    from the northernmost point in Norway to the southernmost section of Sweden. When I    my plans with my dad, he    as I thought he would. Because I get my adventurous    from him, he was all for it.
I had only been away from my    three days now, but there was an inner    going on inside of me. Part of me was homesick and doubting whether I    could make it. The other part of me was ready to      to myself and my family that I could do it by myself.
On the road, I met another      who was quite a bit older than I was. He had started his journey     by bike at the southern part of Norway and had just finished. I could tell he had a great sense of      . It encouraged me not to      .
As I listened to my      artists on my MP4 player, I pedaled (踩踏板) with my feet. There was      around me for miles.      , that wasn’t entirely true. There were mosquitoes--- millions of them. My arms were so dotted with      that they looked like a topographical map (地形圖). But, however      it would be, nothing could stop my advance towards the destination. As you know, adventure is in my blood.

One effective way of destroying happiness is to look at something and focus on even the smallest fault. It’s like looking at the tiled (鋪瓦的) ceiling and concentrating on the space where one tile is    1  .
Once I heard a bald man said, “Whenever I enter a room, all I see is hair.” Once you’ve    2   what your missing tile is, explore whether acquiring it will    3   make you happy. Then do one of the three things: get it, replace it with a different    4 , or forget about it and    5  the tiles in your life that are not missing.
We all know people who have had a relatively    6  life, yet are essentially unhappy, while people who have suffered a great deal generally remain happy.
The first    7  is gratitude. All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy. We tend to think that being unhappy leads people to    8 , but it’s truer to say that complaining leads to people becoming unhappy.
The second secret is awareness. We should    9   that happiness is a byproduct (副產(chǎn)品) of something else. The most obvious    10   are those pursuits ( 追求) that give our lives purpose---anything from studying insects to playing baseball. The more passions we have, the more happiness we are   11   to experience.
Finally, the belief that something permanent goes beyond us and that our   12   has some larger meaning can help us to feel happier. We need a spiritual faith, or a philosophy of life. Whatever your philosophy is, it should    13  this truth: if you choose to find the   14   in every situation, you will be blessed, and if you choose to find the awful, you will be cursed. As for happiness itself, this    15   depends on your decision to make.
