The most frightening words in the English language are,“Our computer is down.”Yon hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport wailing for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said,“I' m Sony. I can' t sell you a ticket. Our computer is down.”
“If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket.”
“I can' t write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so.”
I looked down the counter and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, What do yon do.
“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”
So when it goes down, you go down with it.
“That's all right, air.”
“How long will the computer be down?”I wanted to know.
“I have no idea. Sometimes it' s down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There is no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it' s clown it won't answer us.”
After the girl told me they had no backup computer, I said,“Let' s forget the computer. What about your planes They're still flying, aren't they?”
“I couldn't tell without asking the computer.”
“Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he' s firing to Washington.”I suggested.
“I wouldn't know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn't take you if you didn't have a ticket.”
“Is there any other airline firing to Washington within the next few hours?”
“I wouldn't know,”she said, pointing at the dark screen.“Only'IT'knows.'IT'cant tell me.”
By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The words soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.

Are you worried by the rising crime (犯罪) rate? If you are, then yon probably know that your house, possessions and person are increasingly in danger of suffering from the great rise in the cases of burglary (偷盜) and attack.
Figures show an ever-increasing crime rate but it is only too easy to imagine “It will never happen to me”. Unfortunately, statistics (統(tǒng)計數(shù)字) show that it really can happen to you and, if yon live in a large city, you run twice the risk of being a victim (受害人).
Fortunately, there is something definite which yon can do. Protect Alarms can help to protect your house with a burglar alarm system which is effective, simple to operate and easily affordable.

In the U. S, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don't know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don't know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette first asking if it will disturb them.
At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if yon order coffee, you may get a free refill.
Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.
Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can't finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you're taking the food for yourself.
Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal.
Tips are not usually added to the cheek. They not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is bought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.

C.American people never sit with people they don't know.
D.American people would not light a cigarette if the people who sit at the same table mind their smoking.
2.What is served before you order?
[ ]
3.What do American people always do when servings are too large for them?
[ ]
A.They take the food home with a doggie bag for their dogs.
B.They leave the food on the table and go away.
C.They take the food home with a doggie bag and enjoy the food later.
D.They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them.
