When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores in certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or anxious situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And, if he can’t make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he fails; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(人生觀) on life, special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you’ll see great difference between what we call “bright” children and “not bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out more about life --- he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.

During adolescence(青春期), peers(同齡人) play a large part in a young person's life and typically replace family as the center of a teen's social activities. Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked or because they worry that other kids may make fun of them if they don't go along with the group. Others may go along because they are curious to try something new that others are doing. The idea that "everyone's doing it" may influence some kids to leave their better judgment, or their common sense, behind.
As children grow, develop, and move into early adolescence, contacts with one's peers and the attraction of peer identification (認(rèn)同)increases. As pre-adolescents begin rapid physical, emotional and social changes, they begin to question adult standards and the need for parental guidance. They find it good to turn for advice to friends who understand— friends who are in the same position themselves. By trying new things and testing their ideas with their peers, there is less fear of being laughed at.
There are two levels of peer pressure. The first is in the large group: for most teens a school or a youth group are examples. This is the situation that gets the most attention. The second is in the close relationship with one or several best friends. This is the situation that is sometimes disregarded. The large group puts a general pressure on its members. It sets the standard for clothing, music, entertainment, and "political correctness". The pressure can be avoided by keeping quiet or by putting on the appearance of agreement.
1.Why can’t some children follow their common sense?
A. Because they want to be liked by everybody.
B. Because they don’t want to make fun of others.
C. Because they are curious about their new friends.
D. Because they think all the children will do the same.
2.When in pre-adolescence, who may children ask for suggestions?
A. ParentsB. TeachersC. FriendsD. Classmates
3.Which word can replace the underlined word disregarded in the last paragraph?
A. unnoticed B. mentionedC. disagreedD. avoided
4.What might be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. The reasons of peer pressure.
B. The advantages of peer pressure.
C. Peer pressure from close friends.
D. Peer pressure from a youth group.

Scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have reported evidence that Mars was warmer and wetter long ago than it is today. The Caltech scientists say they have directly established the temperature of Mars four billion years ago. At least, they established the surface temperature on part of the planet at that time. The researchers say it is the first such evidence to be discovered and presented.
The Caltech scientists say carbonate(碳酸鹽)minerals formed on Mars at about eighteen degrees Celsius. They reached the finding after studying a meteorite(隕石)that had its beginnings near the Martian surface.
Today, the average temperature on Mars is sixty-three degrees below zero Celsius.
The finding was reported on the website of the National Academy of Sciences. Caltech Assistant Professor Woody Fischer helped to prepare the report. He says eighteen degrees Celsius is not especially cold or hot. He says this makes the finding extremely interesting. Knowing the temperature can give scientists an idea of the climate on Mars long ago. It can also help them decide whether the planet had liquid water. Spacecraft orbiting Mars have shown what appear to be rivers, lakebeds and mineral deposits. These pictures suggest that, at one time, water did flow there. Mars Rover vehicles and other spacecraft have proved the information.
The meteorite the scientists examined is one of the oldest known rocks in the world. It is called the Allan Hills meteorite. Its name came from the place in Antarctica where it was found in 1984. The meteorite is believed to have blown loose from the Mars' surface when another space rock struck its "home."
1.The underlined word “establish” in Paragraph 1 probably means “___________”.
A. to set up
B. to make people accept a belief
C. to discover or prove
D. to start having a relationship with others
2.How did the scientists reach the finding?
A. By studying Allan Hills meteorite.
B. By using spacecraft orbiting Mars.
C. By studying minerals gathered on Mars.
D. By studying a meteorite on the Martian surface.
3.According to the fourth paragraph, what have spacecraft orbiting Mars done?
A. Measuring the temperature of Mars.
B. Taking photos of the surface of Mars.
C. Finding that there is water flowing on Mars.
D. Proving where human beings will probably land on Mars.
4.Where can we most probably read this passage?
A. In a biography of scientists.B. In a geography magazine.
C. In an environment report.D. In a science report.
