For much of my childhood, my mother filled the evening hours doing something for someone else. Sometimes she knitted (編織) hats for babies, and at other times she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn't when one evening my mother announced she'd start a new project.
"I'm going to telephone neighboring every night," said my mother.
"Every night? But you don't even these people. "
"Doesn't matter," she said. "What's important is that I want to listen."
I was sixteen years old and couldn't figure out why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two elder sisters to call she felt lonely.
My didn't affect my mother's project. That evening after supper, she settled on the sofa with the phone and began making phone calls.
For a while, I listened as she asked the lady on the phone about her day, what she had eaten for dinner, and asked if she had that the beautiful roses had come out in a neighboring park. When she finished the call, I said, "What do you whether she had cookie or cream pie for dessert?"
My mother replied, "I'm the person she talked to today."
It took me nearly thirty years to understand the of what she was doing. Now, as my mother is nearing sixty, I find myself thinking about those nightly she used to make.
I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I'm the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole a piece of cheese from the kitchen.
I that my mother's calls were lifelines (生命之線 ) that kept lonely seniors connected to the world. Somehow, she managed to work full-time and a family while improving the lives of others.
That kind of needs commitment (奉獻(xiàn),投入) and organizational skills that I do not have. While she freed several seniors from , I struggle to call just one - my mother.

We’ve been covering standing desks for a long time now because experts agree that sitting all day is killing us.We want to be productive while also keeping our bodies healthy.Over the years, there have been several solutions to this from fixed standing desks to adjustable ones, portable desks to ones that change into shelves.
However, the most high tech and elegant solution has to be this new smart desk called The Stir Kinetic Desk. The desk learns your daily behaviors and moves between a sitting and standing height regularly throughout the day to keep you moving without interrupting your work flow.
You can program specific sitting and standing intervals or let the desk set the schedule. If you tend to sit while returning emails in the morning, but always want to stand during that afternoon conference call, the desk will learn those regular habits and adjust the schedule to fit them. Of course, the desk can always be manually lowered or raised by using the touch screen on the lower left comer of the desk.
When switching positions, the desk gently dips and rises to let you know that a change is coming up.If you’re not ready to switch positions at that time, you can tap the touchscreen to stay sitting or standing for a while longer.
The built.in touchscreen also keeps track of your daily sitting and standing times and tells you how many calories you’ve burned. You can even set goals for how long or often you want to stand. The desk also works with fitness devices like the FitBit to track your movements.
All of that smart tech doesn’t come cheap though. The M1 desk, which is the everyday model, runs a steep $2,990,while the more executive model with added features, the F1,goes for$4,190.
While expensive,it’s worth thinking of how much time we spend at our desks.Much like a good mattress(床墊),a good desk that works with you is worth the investment.Hopefully in a few years these smart, integrated desks will be more common and less expensive.

Look carefully and you’ll find musicians at the top of almost any industry. The television broadcaster Paula Zahn(cello) and the NBC chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd (French horn) attended college on music scholarships; Both Microsoft’s Mr. Allen and the venture capitalist Rogar McNamee have rock bands. Lorry Page, a co-founder of Google, played saxophone in high school. The former World Bank president James D. Wolfensohn has played cello at Carnegie Hall.
The connection isn’t a coincidence. I know because I asked. I put the question to top-flight professionals in industries from tech to finance to media, all of whom had serious ( if often little-known) past lives as musicians. Almost all made a connection between their music training and their professional achievements.
Will your school music program turn your kid into a Paul Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft (guitar)? Or a Woody Allen (clarinet )? Probably not. These are outstanding achievers. But the way these and other visionaries (有遠(yuǎn)見(jiàn)的人) I spoke to process music is interesting.
But the key question is: why does that connection exist? Paul Allen offers an answer. He says music “establish your confidence in the ability to create.” He began playing the violin at age 7 and switched to the guitar as a teenager. Even in the early days of Microsoft, he would pick up his guitar at the end of marathon days of programming. The music was the emotional analog (類比) to his day job, both of them show his different creativity. He says, “something is pushing you to look beyond what currently exists and express yourself in a new way.”
For many of the high achievers I spoke with, music functions as a “hidden language,” as Mr. Wolfensohn calls it, one that enhances the ability to connect different or even opposite ideas. When he ran the World Band, Mr. Wolfensohn traveled to more than 100 countries, often taking in local performances (and occasionally joining in on a borrowed cello), which helped him understand “the culture of people”.
Consider the qualities these high achievers say music has sharpened : cooperation, creativity, discipline and the capacity to coordinate (協(xié)調(diào)) conflicting ideas. All are qualities obviously absent from public life. Music may not make you a genius, or rich, or even a better person. But it helps train you to think differently, to process different points of views --- and most important, to take pleasure in listening.
1.The reason why the author quote so many outstanding people as examples in the first paragraph is ___________.
A. to prove the popularity and the charm of music
B. to prove all winners are musicians before
C. to encourage kids to choose school music program
D. to prove the connection between success and music
2.Which of the following is true?
A. Everybody knows those well-known people are musicians before.
B. Musicians exist in all industries.
C. Music can certainly make you become a better person.
D.Music helps Mr. Wolfensohn have a better understanding of the different culture.
3.The author develops the passage mainly _________.
A. by classification B. by comparison
C. by example D. by process

I am a Senior 3 student. I often quarrel with my mother over if I can watch TV after school. My mother holds the view that students in Senior 3, heavily burden with their studies, are so busy to spare any time to watch TV. It seemed to her that once I am allowed to do that I will not able to control myself and forget all about my study. She also thinks that it is bad for her eyes to watch TV too often. But I really can’t accept her ideas. I think it is relaxed to watch TV before a day’s hard work. Not only can it set my mind at rest, but it can broaden my horizons. In addition, and we can be kept well informed of what’s happening at home and abroad and keep up with the times.
Now we have at last reached an agreement that I can only watch TV at weekends, and the content is limited to news and program of entertainment, sports or science.

The reason why women love to spend hours in shops while men prefer to be in and out of the high street in minutes can trace back(追溯) to their hunter-gathering past, find scientists.
While women spent their days gathering food, often with children, men were hunters who made plans about how to catch and kill their prey (獵物). These two ways of getting food in the past show how we shop in modern times, the study believes.
Women would spend hours trying to find the right things, because they had in the past spent ages trying to find the best quality and health-giving food. Men, on the other hand, decided in advance what animal they wanted to kill and then went looking for it. Once it was found and killed, they returned home.
Daniel Kruger, professor of the University of Michigan, said the study could be the answer to why there are a lot of collisions when couples go shopping together. He said it could also help couples to avoid fights in the shops if they understood the reasons why each sex had different ways of deciding on the perfect present.
“In modern times, women are much more likely than men to know when a specific type of item will go on sale. Women also spend much more time choosing the perfect color and texture.”
Professor Kruger said his study was important because if men and women understood each other’s shopping habits they could avoid arguments while shopping.
1.What has decided the different shopping habits of men and women?
A. Different ways of keeping food in the past.
B. Different ways of eating in the past.
C. Different ways of buying food in the past.
D. Different ways of gathering food in the past.
2.In comparison(比較) with men, women were less likely to_____.
A. catch the right animal and kill it.
B. spend much time on shopping.
C. choose the right color and texture.
D. know when a specific item was on sale.
3.What does the underlined word mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Requests B. Arguments.
C. Concerns. D. Differences.
4.According to Kruger, his study can help to _____.
A. develop good shopping habits.
B. avoid arguments in shopping between men and women.
C. give people tips on choosing good gifts.
D. make sure people buy safe food for children.
