【題目】

Keeping Safe in Your House During a Fire

Thought you may not think you’ll ever fall victim to a house fire, it’s better to be prepared to avoid panicking. To increase your chances of survival, just follow these steps.

(1)React as soon as you hear your smoke alarm go off. On hearing your smoke detector or alarm going off and seeing a fire, exit your home as safely as possible. 1

(2)Safely exit through doors. If you don’t see smoke at the door, open it slowly and pass through it after making sure the door feels cool. If there is a fire preventing you from exiting the room, close the door.

(3)Protect yourself from smoke inhalation(吸入). Get low to the floor and crouch or crawl on your hands and knees to avoid the smoke. 2 Cover your nose and mouth if you have to walk by or through a heavily smoke-filled room.

(4) 3 If your clothes catch fire, immediately stop what you’re doing, drop flat to the ground, and roll around until you put the fire out.

(5)Prevent the smoke if you can’t get out. 4 Close your door and cover all vents(通風口)and cracks(縫隙)around it with cloth or tape to keep the smoke out.

(6) Call for help from a second story window. 5 You can take a sheet or something else---white preferably---and hang it out the window to signify that you needed help when the first responders get there.

A. If you are trapped in your second story room, get to an area where people can find you.

B. Do not try to get your phone, valuables, or your other important possessions.

C. Smoke inhalation causes people to become unconscious.

D. Escape from a second story window if you can.

E. You are probably a lot safer by closing doors.

【題目】Digital technology-email and smart phones especially-have vastly improved workers’ ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses arc doubtful about remote working. Half of the workers say their boss doesn’t accept it, and only 35 percent say it’s tolerated.

Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced (加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they’ve watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner.

It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more efficient (高效的), because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It’s much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush.

The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven’t come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker.

More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who haven’t worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility (靈活性) to manage their time efficiently.

1Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working?

A. They have little trust in modem technology.

B. They want to stick to their routine practice.

C. They fear losing control of their workers.

D. They are used to face-to-face communication.

2What seems to be most workers’ attitude toward remote working?

A. Favorable. B. Doubtful.

C. Reserved. D. Disapproving.

3What does the author suggest smart firms do?

A. Shorten their office hours. B. Give employees a pay raise.

C. Reduce their staffs workload. D. Adopt flexible work patterns.

【題目】When someone has been bitten by a snake, try to find out if the snake is poisonous or harmless. Their bite marks are usually different. The bite of most of most poisonous snake leaves marks of two fangs(毒牙). If the bit of a snake leaves only two rows of teeth marks, but no fang marks, it is less likely that the snake is poisonous.

People often believe that certain harmless snakes are poisonous. Try to find out which of the snakes in your ares are truly poisonous and which are not. Please do not kill non-poisonous snakes, because they do no harm. On the contrary, they kill mice and other pests that do lots of damage. Some even kill poisonous snakes.

Here is some treatment for poisonous snakebite:

*Stay quiet: don’t move the bitten part. The more it’s moved, the faster the poison will spread through the body. If the bite is on the foot, the person should not walk at all. Send for medical hep.

*Remove jewellery because swelling can spread rapidly.

*Wrap the bitten are with a wide elastic bandage or clean cloth to slow the spread of poison. Keeping the arm or leg very still, wrap it tightly, but not so tight that it stops the pulse(脈搏)at the wrist or on top of the foot. If you cannot feel the pulse, loosen the bandage a little.

*Wind the bandage over the hand or foot, and up the whole arm or leg. Make sure you can still feel the pulse.

*Carry the person, on a stretcher(擔架)if possible, to the nearest health center. If you can also take the snake, because different snakes may require different antivenoms(抗毒血清).

*Poisonous snakebite is dangerous. Send for medical help----but always do the things explained above at once. Some treatments, such as cutting the skin around the bite and sucking the venom out of the bite, can cause infection. And remember: Never drink alcohol after snakebite. It makes things worse!

1What is the purpose of paragraph 2?

A. To introduce us to different kinds of snakes.

B. To tell us how to recognize poisonous snakes.

A. reduce the pulse.

B. avoid infection.

C. prevent the blood from flowing.

3Which of the following first aids may cause infection..

【題目】Jack was born without eyes. He’s very lucky with his timing. He grew up having other kittens to play and socialize with, and was used to people from the moment he was born since there are always kids hanging around the barn. He was a favorite amongst the students at the barn. However, when it came time to find the kittens homes, no one knew where Jack would end up. That’s when I got an e-mail from my friend. All she asked was “Do you still want one of the kittens? There’s one here with no eyes and no one can take him.” Without thinking I told her that I did want the kitten.

When we first brought him home Jack stayed mostly in my room. He walked cautiously around, sniffing everything. After about a day he had no issues running around, jumping onto my bed and climbing on everything. He went through a time where he could climb the stairs, but couldn’t get down. He would sit at the top and cry until someone came and got him. Every now and then when he gets disoriented he’ll stop and cry. But we just call his name and talk to him and it isn’t long before he finds his way back to us.

Also, a few weeks after getting Jack, we got a new barn cat named Bear. I always take Jack outside at that time for some fresh air and exercise. He loves to run (at top speed!) around the back yard and gardens. Bear and Jack have become best friends. It doesn’t matter that he can’t see, Jack always knows when Bear is around. He’ll run across the yard straight to Bear and wrap his front legs around his neck in a big hug. They chase each other around and wrestle, and when they’re tired they’ll lie down in the grass together.

Jack is truly an inspiration. I’ve owned a lot of kittens in my life, but Jack is the happiest, most playful of them all. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself. Heck, for all he knows, all cats are just like him. People who know Jack don’t feel sorry for him. They cherish him for the treasure that he is. I have talked to a few people who haven’t met him personally who tend to pity him, but they just don’t understand. Jack doesn’t need pity. I think Jean (who has Gumbo the eyeless ginger) said it best when she told me that cats don’t have disabilities, they have adaptabilities.

1According to the first paragraph, Jack __________.

A. got seriously disabled after birth

B. had a good time in the place where he was born

C. ended up wandering in the street at first

D. grew up lonely and sad

2When Jack first came to the authors house, he __________.

A. would cry when he felt lonely

B. was very happy and played wildly in the room

C. had difficulty getting down the stairs

D. always needed someone to guide him

3Which of the following has a similar meaning to the underlined word “disoriented”?

A. Hurt. B. Caught.

C. Lost. D. Broken.

4What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

A. Jack needs people’s pity.

B. All disabled cats have strong adaptabilities.

C. People always feel sad for Jack.

D. Jack’s story has inspired people.
