A Strange Greeting, a True Feeling. Last week I was invited to a doctor’s meeting at the Ruth hospital for incurables. In one of the wards a  patient, an old man, got up shakily from his bed and moved towards me. I could see that he hadn't long to   36  , but he came up to me and placed his right foot close mine on the floor.

“Frank!” I cried in astonishment. He couldn’t   37   , as I knew, but all the time   38  his foot against mine.

My   39   raced back more than thirty years to the   40   days of 1941, when I was a student in London. The   41  was an air-raid shelter, in which I and about hundred other people slept every night. Two of the regulars were Mrs. West and her son Frank.

His mother told me he was 37 then, but he had   46  of a mind than a baby has. His “  47 ” consisted of rough sounds—sounds of pleasure or anger and   48  more. Mrs. West, then about 75, was a strong, capable woman, as she had to be, of course, because Frank   49  on her entirely. He needed all the   50  of a baby.

One night a policeman came and told Mrs. West that her house had been flattened by a 500-pounder. She   51  nearly everything she owned.

When that sort of thing happened, the rest of us helped the   52  ones. So before we   53   that morning, I stood beside Frank and   54  my right foot against his. They were about the same size. That night, then, I took a pair of shoes to the shelter for frank. But as soon as he saw me he came running and placed his right foot against mine. After that, his   55  to me was always the same.

“If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”  That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things as we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. There you can feel everything on show. If we want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see.
