Listening is an important part of communication, and it is different from hearing. Being a good and
patient listener helps you not only solve many problems at work or home, but also see the world through
the eyes of others.  1  Though listening to other people may seem simple, doing it well takes efforts and
lots of practice.
Place yourself in the other person's shoes. You must look at the problems from the other person's
viewpoint and actively try to see his or her point of view.   2  Don't tell him that if you would have been in
his or her shoes, you would have seen your way through the problem much faster.
Give all of your attention. Turn off cell phones. It may be the easier to arrange to talk somewhere nothing will disturb you.    3
4   Nodding your head means you hear what the speaker is saying, and will encourage him to
continue. Body language that is similar to the speaker will allow the speaker to relax and open up more.
Do not interrupt (打斷) with what you feel or think about the topic being discussed.   75   Active listening
requires the listener to put aside his or her own opinions for a while, and let another person talk the
situation out and find his or her own way.
A. In addition, you learn a lot from listening.
B. Repeat some of the words said by the speaker.
C. Wait until another person asks for your opinion.
D. Follow and encourage the speaker with body language.
E. When you look at the person you are listening to, look into his eyes.
F. It is not a good idea to consider yourself to be smarter than the speaker.
G. Quiet your mind and open yourself to whatever the person might have to say.

A. Gift giving proven to be valuable
B. Memories from gift giving
C. Moments and events for gift giving
D. Various functions of gift giving
E. Gift giving as a wasteful practice
F. Gift giving as a two-way social activity
                                                                         Gift Giving
1.______
There are many occasions (場合) for giving gifts in modern industrialized societies: birthdays, naming
ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year. It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations
in western cultures. In addition, special events, such as one's first day of school or graduation from university,
often require gift giving.
2.______
What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we are exchanging gifts. If someone gives me
a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday. A gift builds
up or confirms a social obligation (義務).
3.______
Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means of communication between loved ones. People say
that a gift lets the recipient (接受者) know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make the person "feel
special." We want people to feel wanted, to feel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say
"I'm sorry." Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present that someone will like. Sometimes we give things
that we like or would feel comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sending out messages-often very
expressive ones.
4.______
People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A woman whose mother had died years ago
described the many gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given her over the years:"I
appreciate these, and they mean something to me," the woman said, "because I remember the occasions they
were given on, and that they were from my mother, and the relationship we've had." The gifts remain and keep
the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt the same way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that
the recipients would look at her gifts in years to come and remember her.
5.______
Emotions (情感) like these suggest that a positive spirit still lies behind gift giving. They prove that the
anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss was wrong to say that modern western gift giving is highly wasteful.
Studies in Canada and elsewhere have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if so many
are given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very reason for the tradition to continue.

When children celebrate a wedding anniversary for the parents, it's not just a celebration for the
parents but for the whole family. There are many types of wedding anniversary gifts.      1    Choosing a
gift for parents that involves the whole family makes the event more special for them.
Budget(預算)
Children shouldn't spend too much money on the gift. Parents usually know the financial conditions of
their children.     2
     Considerations
An anniversary gift for parents should have two characteristics: customized (訂制的), and something
they can use together. It is not a good idea to choose a gift that only looks good. The gift is celebrating
their time spent together, so it has to be something they both will enjoy.
     Family celebration
One of the biggest achievements of parents is raising children. So some children decide to buy an
anniversary gift that involves the entire family such as a special family vacation.      3
     A party as a gift
4      If it is a milestone anniversary such as a 25th or 50th wedding anniversary, some children
choose to hold a party. The guest list includes all family members who have been close to them over the
years.
     Family-themed gifts
One choice is a family photo taken by a professional or even a painting created by a professional
artist using a family photo as the image to be painted.      5   If the parents don't have a DVD player,
the player can be included as part of the gift.
A. Sometimes gifts don't have to be objects bought with money.
B. Brothers and sisters can share the cost of the party.
C. And these gifts reflect a lot of thought and effort.
D. So the gift should be one selected specially for parents.
E. Overspending can make parents uncomfortable and worried.
F. This way, the family can be together to celebrate the anniversary.
G. Another nice gift is making a DVD with old videotapes of family events.

A.The secret of the writer's success
B. A write with enduring popularity
C. Well-received creation to encourage Brits
D. The insight into human nature
E. Writing styles in different stages
F. The story appreciate for school students
1. (     )
Charles Dickens is often thought of as one of England's great writers. Yet for many his language is
old-fashioned and his story plots often improbable. Why, Dickens, out of so many other great English
writers, has made the list? How then to explain Dickens's enduring popularity?
2. (     )
One reason undoubtly is the British government's insistence that every child studies a Dickens novel at
school. Alongside Willian Shakespeare, Charles Dickens is a compulsory (必讀的) writer on every English
literature school reading list. His stories, though often over-long by today's standard, are superbly written
moral tales. They are filled with colorful characters.
3. (     )
But what makes his books stand out from other English writers is his insight into human nature. Dickens,
like Shakespeare, tells us truths about human behavior that are as true to citizens of the 21st century as they
were to his readers in the 19th century. Readers have returned to Dickens's books again and again over the
years to see what he has to say about readers'own time.
4. (     )
The BBC adapted one of his less well-known novels, Little Dorrit, into a popular television drama that
introduced many Brits to the novel for the first time. A dark story about greed and money, it was the perfect
story to illustrate the bad times. No surprise then that it was Dickens Britons turned to, during the economic
crisis last year, to make sense of world rapidly falling apart.
5. (     )
Readers of the 19th and early 20th century usually prized Dickens's earlier novels for their humor and
pathos (悲痛). While recognizing the virtues of these books, critics today tend to rank more highly the later
works because of their formal coherence and acute perception (洞察力) of the human condition. For as long
as Dickens's novels have something to say to modern audiences, it seems likely that he will remain one of
Britain's best loved writers.

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time.  1  Some ways of dealing with stress
- like screaming or hitting someone - don't solve(解決)much. But other ways, like talking
to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
(1)Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk
to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives.    2  They might have
had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
(2)Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take
it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are
always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself. 3
(3)Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and
friends, it's time to get down to business.  4  Even if you can't solve it all,
you can solve a piece of it.
(4)Be positive. Most stress is temporary (暫時的). Remember stress does go away,
especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make
your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.   5
A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
B. Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.
C. Different people feel stress in different ways.
D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E. You need to figure out what the problem is.
F. And don't forget about your friends.
G. Then, find a way to calm down.
