Our interpersonal skills have a great effect on success in our daily lives. This appears not only in the workplace where we can make more money or enjoy our job more, but also shows itself in marriage, raising a family and the ability to reach goals in almost every area of life. Interpersonal skills come into play when our flight is cancelled and we need to make other arrangements. They come into play when a marriage is threatened by financial challenges or infidelity(不忠).
Our communication skills even matter when we are in traffic and we need to make a decision about how to respond to other drivers. Communicating with others becomes inseparable from having a good day, or a bad day not only in how we begin communication, but in how we react to the communications of others who are having a difficult time.
It can make a difference in saving a marriage or getting a divorce, celebrating a rise or getting fired, and even having your eggs cooked as the way you like at the local restaurant. Many wise men and women have stressed the importance of dealing with others in a skillful manner.
Getting feedback(反饋意見) from others can be of great value in improving our interpersonal communication skills. Often, however, others are not skilled at giving feedback. When we get negative results, they rarely include the details we need in order to improve our interpersonal skills.
Since life improves so much with greater communication skills, getting feedback and an opportunity to improve would be not only life-saving for pilots, but labor-saving for the rest of us. Three quarters of Britain’s parents are too busy to read bedtime stories to their children, according to a study. The study was carried out by CITV to start their new children’s show Bookaboo, which is designed to encourage anyone to pick up a book and read with their children at any time of the day.
Worryingly, the study showed that only three percent of fathers now find the time to read to the kids compared to 89 percent of mothers. Lucy Goodman, creator of Bookaboo, said,“It’s important for young boys to be able to share a book with dads, granddads or male carers and it can be fun and rewarding, too.” Of the dads who said they didn’t read to their kids,87 percent blamed work while more than a third said they were too tired. While 89 percent of mums said they did read to their children, more than half of them said cleaning distracted (使分心) them and 49 percent were distracted by other household things.
Researchers also found parents are now relying heavily on other people to lend a hand with reading to their children with grandparents doing the most, followed by sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles. While 95 percent of parents read to their children at some point, only five percent read to their children during the day. More than one in ten said they read every couple of weeks or less, and five percent could not remember the last time they shared a book.
The study found parents also seem content with allowing their children to immerse (使沉浸) themselves in TV programs or playing computer games rather than reading.
Exgoalkeeper David Seaman, who is a dad of two,has been a guest in Bookaboo. He says,“I think it’s important that fathers do read to their children because it’s a special time. Sometimes my two children will come to listen to the same book—it’s a magical moment and I advise fathers just to try it.”

If you are planning on traveling, there are few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (出發(fā)) time. It is surprising how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at he airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the person at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards (信用卡), it is still important to have some local money in cash (現(xiàn)金). Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. You can imagine how terrible I felt at that moment.
The third and the last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination(目的地) before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome of Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day

“The price of books for our students is just getting higher and higher and, combined with the rising cost of tuition,it’s killing these students,”said Peter Jason,a college professor.“Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America.Almost half of them have at least one part-time job.In fact, one of my students has three jobs. And she still manages to have high scores and go to school full-time.”
Textbook prices are traditionally high.Adding to that problem, many college teachers change textbooks year after year;they either upgrade to a new edition or switch to an entirely different textbook. This further hurts students because if an instructor no longer uses a particular textbook, that book has no resale value.
Dr.Jason decided to make lire a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking.“Many books have an increased price because of CD-ROMs,lots of color photographs and pictures.I talked to my students, and many of them, like me,prefer to keep things simple! So,a few years ago,I wrote my own textbook.Compared to most other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one-third the price. That is,數(shù)學(xué)公式90.When I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages, For only $7.00,they had almost a new book. Producing money requires both artistic and technological skills. Dollar bills are made so that they are interesting to look at but very hard to copy. In total, there are sixty-five separate steps required to make a dollar bill.
The money making process begins when a yearly order is sent by the Federal Reserve Board. That order will then be divided in half. Half will be done here in Washington, D.C. and the other half will be done in Fort Worth, Texas. Next, the Bureau orders special paper which is actually cloth since it is 75% cotton and 25% linen.
This paper is made so that it can last a long time. And, it is made with details that make it hard to copy. For example, bills contain security threads. These narrow pieces of plastic are inside the paper and run along the width of the bill. This special paper is also made with very small blue and red fibers.
Once the money is printed, guillotine cutters (切紙機(jī)) separate the sheets into two notes, then into individual notes. The notes are organized in "bricks," each of which contains forty one-hundred-note packages. The bricks then go to one of twelve Federal Reserve Districts, which then give the money to local banks. Ninety-five percent of the bills printed each year are used to replace money that is in circulation, or that has already been removed from circulation.
You may know that America's first president, George Washington, is pictured on the one- dollar bill. But do you know whose face is on the two, five, ten, twenty, fifty and one hundred-dollar bills? They are, in order. President Thomas Jefferson, President Abraham Lincoln, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, President Andrew Jackson, President Ulysses Grant and statesman Benjamin Franklin.
The average life span of a one-dollar bill is twenty-one months. But a ten-dollar bill lasts only about eighteen months. The one hundred-dollar bill lasts the longest, eighty-nine months. One popular question is about the two-dollar bill. This bill is not printed very often. This is because many Americans believe two-dollar bills are lucky, so they keep them.

  1. 1.

During money production, we must consider all EXCEPT that it must

    1. A.
      last a long time
    2. B.
      be hard to copy
    3. C.
be done by the president's order
    4. D.
      be interesting to look at
  2. 2.

We can learn from the passage that the security threads

    1. A.
      are narrow pieces of plastic
    2. B.
      are pressed outside the bills
    3. C.
are longer than the width of the bills
    4. D.
are actually made of cotton and linen
  3. 3.

How many presidents are printed on the American money?

    1. A.
      Four
    2. B.
      Five
    3. C.
      Six
    4. D.
      Seven
  4. 4.

Why are the two-dollar bills not made often?

    1. A.
      Because no one wants them.
    2. B.
Because they aren't damaged quickly like other bills.
    3. C.
Because they aren't used in America any more.
    4. D.
Because their material is a bit more expensive.

An “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe(賄賂), but is close to it.
All sorts of people are apple polishers, including politicians and people in high offices—just about everybody. Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed.
There are other phrases meaning the same thing as “apple-polishing”—“soft-soaping” or “buttering-up”. A gift is just one way to “soft-soap” somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise—telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how talented and wise he is.
Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love to hear it? Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who get so little of it.
We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But if we just lap it up for its food value and nourishment, as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves.
Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got tired of listening to endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣). They overpraised him to the skies, as a man of limitless might.
He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery

  1. 1.

Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “apple-polishing”?

    1. A.
A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks
    2. B.
An employee tells her boss how good he is at management
    3. C.
A knight is said to be of limitless power by his followers
    4. D.
A teacher praises her students for their talent and wisdom
  2. 2.

What does the writer want to prove with Cromwell’s example?

    1. A.
      Everybody can be an apple-polisher
    2. B.
Cromwell was not a good apple-polisher
    3. C.
George Fox and his party were not apple-polishers
    4. D.
There are people who don’t like being apple-polished
  3. 3.

Which of the following statements about flattery is true according to the author?

    1. A.
Too much flattery can carry us away
    2. B.
Flattery is too empty to do people any good
    3. C.
Flattery can get you nothing but excessive(過(guò)度的) pride
    4. D.
Flattery is one of the ways to apple-polish people
  4. 4.

Why did King Canute of Denmark and England take his followers to the seashore?

    1. A.
Because he was sick of his normal life
    2. B.
Because he disliked being overpraised any more
    3. C.
Because he wanted them to realize how wise he was
    4. D.
Because he wanted them to see how weak he was as a king
  5. 5.

Who does the author think that flattery can do good to ?

Those who are politicians or in high offices
    2. B.
      Those who lack confidence

The structure and workings of the university are ever changing. The university of the past is not like the university of the present and the university of the present will not be like the university of the future. This “adaptation” to the times is what can make some universities great or make some universities among the worst in the nation.
In the past the university was very set in their ways. They did things the way they wanted them done. They paid no attention to the rest of the society and the way the ones paying the bills wanted them done. In the past the professors would lecture endlessly to the students, which often left the students bored and with no idea what was really said to them in the lecture. This is no way to try and teach students; students need interaction with the professors that are paid to teach them. As Paulo Freire believed there needs to be communication between the students and the professors and the class should not be totally memorization. This is the way that things were done in the past.
In the present many universities have either changed or are changing the way that they run their universities. The universities now are taking on many of the modern educational beliefs in order to make changes in the teaching methods. Universities are breaking down many of the divides between majors that they offer. By breaking these barriers the universities are becoming less specialized and more diverse. This goes along with the ideas of Berry who believes that the schools are over-specialized and that the universities are now just machines that are merely meant to produce workers. In the past few years the colleges have been lowering the standards of admission, which in turn lowers the standards of all the schools below the college level. The universities are now on the right track by increasing the standards of admission into their colleges

  1. 1.

In the author’s view, what can decide a university’s quality?

    1. A.
      What its structure is like
    2. B.
      How its workings are run
    3. C.
      What times it belongs to
    4. D.
      Whether it’ll adjust itself
  2. 2.

Which of the following is NOT a feature of universities in the past?

    1. A.
They were run in a fixed way
    2. B.
They ignored the needs of society
    3. C.
They had lower standards of admission
    4. D.
