5.It's 2010,outside the gate of a school somewhere in the UK.Some teenagers are talking.One says to another,"I'm tired of jamming after school---it's really vanilla.Let's go for a za,OK?"Two adults are walking past.They hear what the teenagers are saying,but they don't understand a word.(What the teenagers said was,"I'm tired of hanging around after school---it's really boring.Let's go for a pizza.")
This is nothing new---teenagers always invent new words and phrases.They create words for everyday things---words that mean good or porents or bad or good-looking,and so on.Look at these different ways of saying good in recent decades:
1960s---groovy (or fab)
1970s---neat
1980s---ace
1990s---wicked
2000s---cool
But,of course,the words you use depend on your interests,your friends,the music you listen to and the part of the country you live in.Different groups of teenagers have different likes and dislikes,and so they also have different expressions.
So why do teenagers invent new words,or invent new meanings for old words?Many people think it's because they don't want adults to understand,but that probably isn't true---the real reason is that teenagers like to be creative and play with language,so they have fun creating new words.
And what do parents and old people think about it all?Most of them don't worry about it---after all,they had their own special words when they teenagers too.But,some adults complain about"teen talk"and get quite annoyed by it.But that's all part of the fun for the teenagers!
63.What is the way of teenagers'saying good in the 2000s?(只用一個單詞)
Cool
64.Why do teenagers invent new words?(不多于七個單詞)
Because they have fun creating new words.
65.What is the topic of the passage?(不多于四個單詞)
Teen talk..

15.I was as normal as other children, totally exposed to brilliant sunshine and splendid world. However,I became blind at four after falling off a box car in a yard and landing on my head. Now I am thirty-two.I can slightly remember the brightness of sunshine and what color red is.It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity(災(zāi)難) can do strange things to people. It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn't been blind.I don't mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes.I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.
Life,I believe, asks adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy.I was totally confused and frightened. But luckily,my parents and teacher saw my potential to live, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn't been able to do that,I would have broken down and become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life. When I say belief in myself,I am not talking about simply the kind of self confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone, but something bigger than that:an assurance that I am,despite imperfections,a real, positive person; that somewhere in the complicated pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.
It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the simplest things.Once a man gave me an indoor baseball and urged me to roll it around. His words stuck in my head."Roll it around!"By rolling the ball I could hear where it went. This gave me an idea how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible:playing baseball.Later I invented a successful variation of baseball-groundball.
I have set a series of goals and tried to reach them, one at a time.It was no good trying for something that I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure.I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.
28.What attitude does the author take to his blindness?B
A.Pessimistic.
B.Optimistic.
C.Desperate.
D.Shameful.
29.According to the passage,which statement is TRUE?D
A.After struggling, the author discovered his potential on his own and began to live with it.
B.The author invented a baseball with the help and encouragement of a kind man.
C.The author happened to be blind due to a car accident.
D.The author would not appreciate life if the calamity hadn't occurred.
30.What is the greatest challenge for the author?C
A.Attempting to adjust himself to reality.
B.Figuring out his own potential to live on one's own.
C.Building up his own confidence so that he can find his place in society.
D.Setting and reaching a series of goals.
31.What is the best title of the passage?A
A.A Disaster Pushes a man forward
B.A Fateful Accident
C.A Sorrowful Life
D.Fighting Against Difficulties.

13.The most complex object known to humanity is the human brain-and not only is it complex,but it is one of the few natural phenomena that science has no consciousness of.To try to replicate (復(fù)制) something that is so poorly understood may therefore seem like pride.But you have to start somewhere,and International Business Machines (IBM) and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL),in Switzerland,propose to start by replicating"in silico",one of the brain's building blocks.
In a partnership announced,the two organizations said they would be working together to build a simulation (模擬) of a structure known as a neo-cortical(新大腦皮質(zhì)的)column on a type of IBM supercomputer that is currently used to study the molecular functioning of genes.If that works,they plan to use more powerful computers to link such simulated columns together into something that mimics(模仿) a brain.
In a real brain,a neo-cortical column is a cylindrical(圓柱形的)element about a third of a millimeter in diameter and three millimeters long.It is these columns,arranged side by side like the cells of a honeycomb,which make up the famous"grey matter"that has become shorthand for human intelligence.The Blue Gene/L supercomputer that will be used for the simulation consists of enough independent processors for each to be programmed to mimic an individual nerve cell in a column.
The EPFL's contribution to the Blue Brain Project will be to create a digital description of how the columns behave.The database from its Brain Mind Institute will provide the raw material for the simulation.Biologists and computer scientists will then connect the artificial nerve cells up in a way that mimics nature.They will do so by assigning electrical properties(電能)to them,and telling them how to communicate with each other and how they should modify their connections with one another depending on their activity.
That will be no mean feat.Even a single nerve cell is complicated,not least because each one has about 10,000connections with others.And nerve cells come in great variety-relying,for example,on different chemical transmitters to carry messages across those connections.Eventually,however,a digital representation of an entire column Should occur.
Assuming that the growth of computing power continues to follow Moore's Law,the leader of IBM's side thinks it should be practical to mimic an entire human brain in silico this way in ten to fifteen years.Such an artificial brain would,of course,be a powerful research tool.It would allow neurological experiments that currently take days in a"web lab"to be conducted in seconds.The researchers hope that their simulated brain will reveal the secrets of how certain psychiatric and neurological,disorders develop.But that is probably not the real reason for doing it.The most interesting question,surely,is whether such an artificial brain will be intelligent,or conscious,or both.
59.In a real brain,a neo-cortical columnA.
A.contains a large number of nerve cells
B.is a simulation of a structure
C.is the famous"grey matter"
D.looks like the cells of a honeycomb
60.What does the underlined sentence"That will be no mean feat"in Paragraph 5indicate?B
A.The function of chemical transmitters is hard to understand.
B.It is rather difficult to connect the artificial nerve cells up.
C.A digital representation of an entire column is time-consuming.
D.A single nerve cell is complicated to identify across connections.
61.The fundamental purpose of doing the research is probablyC.
A.to simulate an entire human brain in silico
B.to tell us how some certain disorders emerge
C.to discover how the artificial brain would work
D.to examine whether Moore's Law is still functioning
62.What type of writing is this passage?D
A.A science fiction
B.A computer advertisement
C.An official document
D.A research report.

Connie N.
Philadelphia,PA
Dear Connie,
Start by thinking about how good you are going to look when your braces come off.If you are negative(負面的)about your appearance,people will pick that up right away about you.In the meantime there are several things that you can do to lift your spirits:
Change your hairstyle.Be sure to get a good cut so that the shape of your hair will be flattering to your face and also good for your type of hair (fine,thick,straight,curly,etc.) Choose a hairstyle that draws attention away from your face.Hair pulled back into a pony-tail or into a ball on top or slightly off-center can be attractive and practical for this purpose.
