Last year I worked in Nepalfor three months. When I had a few days off, I decided to go into the jungle(叢林). I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me.
We started our trip at six in the morning with two elephants carrying our things. It was hot, but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find tigers. We climbed onto the elephants’ backs to see better. However, it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the daytime.
Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We moved nearer and found a dead deer. This was the tiger’s lunch! Suddenly, I started to feel very frightened.
Then the tiger jumped out suddenly, about five hundred kilos and four meters long. It caught Kamal’s leg between its teeth, but I managed to pull Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly ran away to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night it was impossible to sleep!

[1] At some point in your life you are bound to be required to give a speech. But are you capable of having the effect on an audience that you want to have? Here are some things to keep in mind.
[2] You may think it's good to create an informal effect, or even that it' s cool to use filler words (填充詞) such as “l(fā)ike” and “you know”. But in reality, these words add nothing, and create the danger of making you sound foolish and uninformed.
[3] Pauses can be of significant help in adding depth to your speech, but only when they  are used at the right moments. Pausing suddenly and with a panicked look will just make your audience uneasy. Also, a very long silence is the last thing you need. Make sure that your pauses are nicely placed if you want to sound like a speaker who has absolute control of what he is talking about.
[4] You also need to be careful when you switch to a new idea during the course of a speech. Often speakers ________such as “well”, “so”, and so on, when they move on to new ideas. My advice, however, is to avoid such words and to try to think of a way of making a tradition that is unique to the topic of your speech.
[5] Finally, avoid “umming” and “ahhing” he way many people do when they give speeches. You want to sound confident and assured, and the way not to do so is to put an “urn” or an “ah” in the middle of every sentence.

[1]Some expressions describe people who are important,or who at least think they are.One such expression is bigwig.

The more important he was—or thought he was一                 .Today, the expression bigwig is used to make fun of a person who feels important.People never tell someone he is a bigwig. They only use the expression behind his back.

[4]The top of something is the highest part.So it is not surprising that top is part of another expression that describes an important person. The expression is top banana.A top banana is the leading person in a comedy show. The funniest comedian is called the top banana. The next is second banana. And so on.Why a banana?A comedy act in earlier days often included a part where one of the comedians would hit the others over the head with a soft object. [1] The key word is practice! Practice, practice, practice!! There is no other way. There is no magic. The way to get better at listening to English is to listen to English. That’s the not-so-good news.
[2] The good news is there are many ways to listen and many things to listen to.
[3] Listening to English songs can be fun. But be careful! Most ____________ use the language in a special way that you don’t hear every day. You don’t want to start speaking English like a poet or songwriter. If you do listen to English songs, listen to different ones. This will help you train your ears to different voices, pronunciations and rhythms.
[4] If you can, get a copy of the lyrics(歌詞) so you can read them and listen to them at the same time. It is sometimes better to listen with your eyes as well as your ears—more information to help the brain.
[5] Watch English DVDs. But, this time, do not use your eyes to read the subtitles (字幕). Turn off the subtitles, because movies have so many other clues about what is happening that it is better not to use the subtitles. This forces your ears to do the work.

閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文后的要求回答問題(請注意問題后的字?jǐn)?shù)要求)。
[l]Fear and pain are two of the most useful things that human beings and animals have, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child would burn himself again and again, because fear would not warn himself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself before. A really fearless soldier is not a good soldier because he will soon be killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out.
[2] In our first sentence we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: A plane may crash on your house, or you may get cancer!
[3] The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but to use fear as your servant and guide instead. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
[4] In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you. Fear warns you, then you jump out of the way, and all is well.
[5] In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to ___________. For example, you can’t prevent a plane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear is no longer of any use, and you have to try to overcome it.
