I met Billy the last summer before college. He was handsome and his irreverence(玩世不恭)was  36 to me. We liked each other the first instant we met.37 ,I was a straight Astudent and my parents had high hopes for me to  38  an Ivy League(常春藤聯(lián)盟)school.Billy did not 39 into the equality. We were in love nevertheless-that 40 teenage love.I still remember we had a plan for prom(舞會(huì)).It was understood that we had  41 about where we would dance and drink and party together.
This meant one thing to my parents-panic.And it grew as the  42 letters began to roll in. Of the eleven schools I applied to,nine accepted me. And one of them was Brown University-the Ivy League college   43 in historic Providence,Rhode Island.
There was no  44 that I was drawn to Brown, but Billy (who had joined the army)was  45 down south and I had offers   46 for me there, too. I was torn between my love for him and my family  47
One week   48  the start of school,my mother had a talk with me.She said I was eighteen years old and I had a  49 to make---one that went  50 beyond the choice of  51 to attend university.
In August,I  52 and drove north to Providence. It took several months to  53 that my life was moving on in a way that was completely different from Billy's,Brown changed my life, opening doors and giving me the  54 I now use to think,to learn and to write. Life is always about  55 it seems, and the older I get,the more I understand this. Still, there are times when I think of Billy because he taught me about love.

On the Iraq-Syria border, a pack of wild dogs circled a group of American soldiers for food. The 1 of the pack was a gray-and-white dog. The soldiers 2 him Nubs. Nubs was shaking and 3  able to stand. Marine major Brian Dennis looked closer and saw that there was a knife wound 4 his chest.
Dennis couldn’t 5 seeing the dog suffer. He and his men immediately treated the wound, and gave Nubs oral medicine. Nubs pulled through but was still 6. The next day, the team had to leave. Ten days later, Dennis’s unit was back and so was Nubs. He was still 7, but the men fed him and played with him.
Before long the unit once again 8 an outpost (前哨) 70 miles away. Nubs, slowly but 9 tracked them far into the trackless wasteland until the men lost 10 of him. Two days later, beyond Dennis’s 11, he saw Nubs just outside the outpost. The dog had 12 him across 70 miles of frozen desert to meet the friend who had saved his life. From then on Nubs and the men slept in the same place, and ran around in the same ruins.
Until a(n) 13 came down from above that they should not be allowed to have pets, Dennis decided to make sure the dog 14 continue to live the good life. So he quickly 15 $4,000 from his family and friends to fly Nubs to 16.
A month later, when Dennis and the dog were 17 in California, at first Nubs didn’t recognize the guy. 18 within seconds , the dog flew into Dennis’s arms, 19 up again and again to lick his friend’s face.
A little care and concern in the middle of war will not save a 20 world. But small stories, like the story of a soldier and a dog, hold a promise of a harmonious world.

Everybody knows how to learn.  Learning is  a natural thing.  It begins the     we are  born.  Our first  teachers are our f amilies. At  home  we  learn  to talk and to         and feed ourselves. We learn these and other skills by       .
Then we go to school. A teacher tells us      to learn and how to learn.  Many teachers teach us, and we pass many tests and exams. Then people say we are      .
Are we really educated? Let's     the real meaning of learning.  Knowing facts doesn't          being  able to solve problems.  Solving  problems requires creativity, not just a good     . Some people who don’t know many       can also be good at solving problems.
Henr Ford is a good       . He left school at the age of 15. Later, when his company couldn’ t build cars     enough, he solved the problem. He       of the assembly line. Today the answer seems      . Yet, just think of the many university  graduates who       solve any problems.
What does a good teacher do? Does he      students factct remember? Well, yes, we must sometimes remember facts. But a good teacher       how to find answers. He brings us to the stream of knowledge so we can think for ourselves. When we are      , we know where to go.
True learning combines intake with output. We take information      our brains. Then we use it. Think of a      ; it stores a lot of information, but it can’t think. It only obeys commands. A person who only remembers facts hasn’t really learned. Learning takes      only when a person can use what he knows.
