Warning: reading too much Cinderella to your daughter may damage her emotional health in later life. A paper to be developed at the international congress of cognitive psychotherapy in Gothenburg suggests a link between the attitudes of women abused by their parents and early exposure to the wrong sort of fairy tales. It says girls who identified with Cinderella, Rapunzel and Beauty in Beauty and the Beast were more likely to say in destructive relationships as adults.

    The theory was developed by Susan Darker Smith, a psychotherapist at the University of Derby. She interviewed 67 female abuse survivors and found that 61 put up with severe abuse because they believed they could change their partners with patience, composition and love. The same view was taken by male survivors who had been abused as children. Hardly any of the women in a control group, who had not experienced abuse, thought they could change their partners in this way.

These women and men said they would leave a relationship rather than put up with abuse from a partner. Ms Darker Smith found the abused women were much more likely to identify with Cinderella and other submissive female characters in fairytales, who were later rescued by a stranger prince or hero.

Although most girls heard the stories, damage appeared to be done to those who adopted the characters as role models. “They believe if their love is strong enough they can change their parents’ behaviors,” she said. “Overexposure in children to stories that emphasize the transformational qualities of love may make women believe they can change their partners.” For example, they might never have understood the obvious flaw in the story of Rapunzel, who remained locked in a high tower until rescued by a knight on a white horse, who broke the door down. “The question,” said Ms Darker Smith, “is why she did not break the door down herself.”

　　Road research experts, puzzled by“motorway madness”, are to make an attempt to discover why drivers continue to take deadly risks in mist and fog．Studies of motorway accidents have given us surprising fact that 98% of drivers ignore all warning of coming danger, particularly fog．

　　After two years of computerized research into driving and crashes, Dr Peter Lewis, a lecturer at Birmingham University Department of Transportation, says：“the positive fright of a crash appears to be the only thing that will make a driver more careful．”

　　His findings agree with those of experts in the Department of the Environment, who have persuaded R．John Gilbert, Minister of Transport, to give the right to the latest of a series of projects to stop the killer resulting from many crashed on motorways．

　　Next month, a 5000-pound American automatic speed-recording machine that photographs vehicle exceeding a set speed will be installed on a stretch of the M4 near Reading．The machine, called Orb is takes a photograph of the vehicle and its number plate, and records its speed, the time and the date．It can record up to 900 vehicles an hour in a 24-hour period．

　　Similar machines are used in Germany and the USA as speed traps, but Dr Gilbert is determined that Orb is will be used only for experiment by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory．

　　Dr Gilbert said last week,"We shall use the machine to identify drivers who drive fast in fog．"The department will then write to them and invited them to complete a questionnaire and perhaps take part in some physical tests．He added,"One of the most interesting aspects of the research so far is that some motorists can see better than others in fog．”

JAKARTA, Sept．17 -- The discovery of four new species of spider in Kalimantan was announced recently, adding to Indonesia's already rich catalog of fauna（動物群）, local media reported on Friday．

The findings, by Cahyo Rahmadi, a zoology researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences （LIPI）, and two colleagues, Mark S．Harvey, from the Western Australian Museum, and Jun-ichi Kojima, from Japan's Ibaraki University, were published in Zootaxa, a taxonomy（分類學） journal．

The four new species of whip spiders, or tailless whip scorpions, known here as kala cemeti, were found in the Sangkulirang caves in East Kalimantan and around Mount Muller in Central Kalimantan．One of the species was named Sarax yayukae, in honor of Yayuk R．Suhardjono, an Indonesian scientist specializing in cave biology who helped the researchers during their work．

Sarax sangkulirangensis was found to be the most widespread of the new species, existing in three regions -- Talabar, Lake Tebo and Pengadan．

Sarax mardua, which was found in Mardua Cave in Pengadan, has a pale-colored body and eyes that are smaller than those of Sarax sangkulirangensis．

The last of the new species, Sarax cavernicola, got its name because it is found only in caves．

It is considered the most unique of the new species because the spine（脊椎） composition on its pincers are all the same length, while other whip spiders have gradually longer spines．

Cahyo warned on Thursday that three of the species endemic（地方性的） to the limestone regions of Sangkulirang were threatened by human activity, including mining and land redevelopment．
