I became a gardener when I was twelve. My early 36 of gardening may not have originated from my love for nature. It was to 37 my parents.
At that time, we had a big yard in which a beautiful maple tree stood. But my mother often looked with 38 at this work of natural art. Those golden leaves seemed like tons of rubbish to her, “something else to 39 !”Seeing the neighbors busy with gardening, my father even thought it a waste of time.
At that age, I always did something 40 to whatever my parents did!If gardening were something they found 41 , I would plant a garden!
I planted some lily(百合花)seeds in the yard. But they failed to 42 . I continued to plant sunflower seeds and roses. Wild 43 joy, I found the first rose bloom(開花). One by one, the flowers bloomed their heads off. 44 , I was touched by this land of wonder.
45 , my parents showed no interest in my garden. My father even 46 at me because he found it was 47 to move around my garden to the driveway. To my mother’s 48 , I put in her vase my real roses which, in her eyes, were simply weeds 49 flowers.
Regardless of their 50 , I kept on planting my garden and 51 to enjoy the pleasure of gardening. Plants make such good companions: they breathe, they bloom, they 52 to care and love.
It has been many years since I made my first garden out of my desire to 53 my parents. Today I become known as Mrs. Greenthumbs, teaching gardening and hosting a gardening show, which makes my parents feel very 54 . And now I could say it is my affection for 55 that makes me a real gardener.

“Dr.Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?”
The usual laughter followed, and people stirred(騷動)to go.Papaderos held up his hand and stilled the room and looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was serious and seeing from my eyes that I was.
“I will,answer your question.”
Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket,he fished into a leather billfold and brought out a very small round mirror, about the size of a quarter. And what he said went like this:
“When I was a small child, during the war,we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day,on the road,I found the broken pieces of a mirror.A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place.
I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible,so I kept only the largest piece. This one, and,by scratching it on a stone.I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine——in deep holes and crevices(裂縫)and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find.
I kept the little mirror, and,as I went about my growing up,I would take it out in idle moments and continue the challenge of the game.As I became a man,I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life.I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light——truth, understanding, knowledge——is there, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.
I am a fragment(碎片)of a mirror whose whole design and shape l do not know.Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world——into the black places in the hearts of men—and change some things in some people.Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life.”

查看答案和解析>> 科目:高中英語 來源:2013屆江西省吉安市西路片七校高三上學(xué)期聯(lián)考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解 I’ve changed my mind. “ I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my dad back.” Lucien Lawrence’s letter to father for Christmas written after his schoolteacher’s father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched everyone’s heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while. But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father there too, either in your mind and heart. I find that my parents, who died years ago, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor, I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all my mother said was “ I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on. It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors, and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause. I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword, and my darling from the power of the dog.” Yet I know the death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, I’m sure, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today. 1.. According to the whole text we can see that the first paragraph ________.
2.. In the second paragraph the author mainly wants to explain to us _______.
3.. What feeling did the author’s mother express in her reply?
4. In the author’s opinion, the value of a person’s life is ________.
5.. What does the writer mean by the sentence taken from an old poem?
