WASHINGTON-Laura Straub is a very worried woman. Her job is to find families for foreign teenagers who expect to live with American families in the summer.?
It's not easy, even desperated.?
“We have many children left to place:40 out of 75,”said Straub, who works for a Paris based foreign exchange programme called LEC. ?
When exchange programmes started 50 years ago, more families were willing to help others. For one thing, more mothers stayed home.?
But now, increasing numbers of women work outside the home. Exchange student programmes have struggled in recent years to sign up host families for the 30 000 teenagers who come from abroad every year to have some courses for one year in the United States, as well as the thousands more who take part in summer programmes.
School systems in many parts of the US, unhappy about accepting non-taxpaying students, have also strictly limited the number of exchange students they accept. At the same time, the idea of hosting foreign students is becoming less exotic(異國情調(diào)的).?
In searching for host families, who usually receive no pay, exchange programmes are increasingly broadening their requests to include everyone from young couples to the retired.
“We are open to many different types of families,”said Vickie Weiner, eastern regional director for ASSE, a 25-year-old programme that sends about 30 000 teenagers on one?year exchange programmes worldwide.?
“For elderly people, exchange students keep up young—they really do,”said Jean Foster, who is hosting 16-year-old Nina Porst from Denmark.?
Foreign teenagers come to American families with the purpose of _______.
A. finding their parents in America B. finding good jobs in America?
C. learning the culture of America D. enjoying the life of America
In the past, Straub's job was easy, because American families _______.?
A. needed more money to live B. had fewer children to support?
C. had spare rooms to rent D. were not as busy as now
To deal with the problems in recent years, Straub and her workmates have to _______.
A. ask different kinds of families for help
B. limit the number of the exchange students?
C. borrow much money to pay for the costs
D. force some families to accept students
From the last paragraph we can conclude that _______.
A. exchange students are welcome in America?
B. exchange students must pay much money to the host families?
C. American students don't want to join the exchange programmes?
D. old Americans can benefit from hosting exchange students

What am I doing with my daughter at home? Rather than read aloud from books, we
go to dinner and have a very good time. This is usually when her Mom isn't around, and this is when my little girl and I relate better. They're alone together so much. We're seldom alone. When we're alone together, she and I somehow behave differently. We learn about each other. She learns that I'm her father. I learn that she's my daughter. It's a strange feeling, but any parent knows what I'm talking about when I say that I often look at my daughter and wonder just whose kid she is. Where'd she suddenly come from? And why on earth did she pick Laura and me for parents?
When my daughter and I are alone she'll hold my hand and say, “I just love you so much, Daddy!” She's so used to my leaving that when I tell her she and I are going to hang out all night, she gets this great look on her face and says, “We've got so much to do, Dad!” There's nothing like it in the world.
I want my relationship with my daughter to keep growing, so I've been giving my wife a couple of hundred dollars each week and making her go to the shopping center with her girlfriends, or something—anything!
But this closeness is not without its problems. When I'm sitting there playing with her Barbie doll(巴比娃娃), washing her hair, a voice in me suddenly says, “I've got to get a drink and get out of here.” Right in the middle of all this pleasantness, the voice goes, “Look at yourself! You're washing dolls!”
1.Why does the husband give his wife so much money each week?
A. He wants her to buy more things for the family.
B. She can do whatever she likes with the money.
C. He can spend more time with his daughter.
D. She can spend more time with her friends.
2. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The father spends more time with the daughter than the mother does.
B.The daughter is happy when the father tells her he will be away.
C.The father is happy, hearing “We've got so much to do, Dad!”
D.The father is sure that the daughter is not his own.
3.What does the last paragraph tell us about the father?
A.He doesn't enjoy being with his daughter.
B.He doesn't like washing his daughter's hair.
C.He likes to enjoy himself by going out for a drink.
D.He has mixed feelings when he is with his daughter.

Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family.
Before getting into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehension level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring.
If you’re at the beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer) are good options.
The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story development to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters.
Another great way to keep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college.
Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!
