【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。 Some veterinary (獸醫(yī)的) professionals voted on the best dogs for new owners.
The Golden Retriever is the No. 1 choice of veterinarians for new dog owners. His sweet, gentle and people-pleasing personality makes him a delightful addition to most families. He loves to play, displays loyalty and love — and, if those are not enough, this guy is a real looker. Those good looks come at a price, though: His gorgeous coat needs regular brushing and bathing.
Smart, energetic, sensible and entertaining, the Poodle is another breed that's great for the beginner dog owners. Poodles have a reputation for being a bit aloof with people they don't know, but we just think they're less “needy”. He's available in three sizes, but whatever size you choose, be aware that if you want his curly coat in anything but a basic cut, you're going to spend a lot of time going to the groomer (美容師).
The lovable Lab has been a favorite breed in the US for more than 20 years, and it would appear that vets agree with this choice, naming him the No.3 best breed for new dog owners. This friendly breed is a popular choice for service and therapy dogs, and his strength makes him an excellent hunting dog and good athlete. These beauties are best suited to active families.
The Cavalier is a popular toy breed. He loves people, whether that involves sitting on laps or going for long walks. The Cavalier is happy, trusting and eas-going, making friends everywhere he goes. Although he can be stubborn, he generally tends to be adaptable enough to sit quietly with an older person, then turn around and play with an active child.
The Bichon Frise was bred specifically to be a companion, so there is little surprise that veterinarians consider him as such a great choice for new dog owners. Wonderfully affectionate (深情的) and endlessly entertaining, he has long been a popular circus performer, but he'll be perfectly happy performing his tricks for his family at home.
(1)The Golden Retriever is the veterinarians' first choice because __________.
A.it doesn't cost much
B.it doesn't need much care
C.it is sweet and good-looking
D.it is helpful to watch out for their houses
(2)The underlined word “aloof” in Paragraph 3 means __________.
A.lovely
B.naughty
C.fierce
D.cold
(3)We can infer that the lovable Lab is___________.
A.unsuitable for people who want a service dog
B.popular in the US mainly because of its gorgeous look
C.often used as a therapy dog because of its quiet personality
D.a good choice for people who enjoy taking a dog on their adventures
(4)What can be implied about the Cavalier in the passage?
A.It can never sit quietly for a long time.
B.It is suitable for both old people and children.
C.It often appears scary to both dogs and people.
D.It is inappropriate for new dog owners because it's too stubborn.
(5)The text is developed by___________.
A.listing some examples
B.presenting some proofs
C.showing some phenomena
D.giving some suggestions

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項中,選出最佳選項。
(B)
Everyone gathered around and Paddy read out loud, slowly, his tone growing sadder and sadder. The little headline said: BOXER RECEIVES LIFE SENTENCE.
Frank Cleary, aged 26, professional boxer, was today found guilty of the murder of Albert Cumming, aged 32, laborer, last July. The jury (陪審團(tuán)) reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe punishment the court could give out. It was, said the judge, a simple case. Cumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and the police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Cumming. When arrested Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking…
Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour. Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered, “Just don't tell my mother.”
“It happened over three years ago,” Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do. “Just don't tell my mother,” said Fee numbly. “And no one did! Oh, God! My poor, poor Frank!” Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said. “Fee dear, pack your things. We'll go to see him.”
She half-rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead. “I can't go,” she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there. “It would kill him to see me. I know him so well— his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone, it's what he wants. We’ve got to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us? ”
Paddy was still weeping, but not for Frank, for the life which had gone from Fee’s face, for the dying in her eyes. Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children.
Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank took it away. But Paddy's love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank.
So he said, “Well, Fee, we won't go. But we must make sure he is taken care of. How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?”
The eyes didn't liven, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks. “Yes, Paddy, do that. Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out. Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don't know.”
(1)Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Frank was found guilty of murder because he was a professional boxer.
B.The family didn't find out what happened to Frank until three years later.
C.The jury and the judge disagreed on whether Frank had committed murder.
D.Frank didn't want his family to find out what happened because Paddy disliked him.
(2)Paddy didn't cry for Frank because he thought ________.
A.Frank did kill someone and deserved the punishment
B.Frank should have told Fee what had happened
C.what had happened to Frank was killing Fee
D.Frank had always been a man of bad moral character
(3)Which of the following suggests that Fee was deeply shocked by what happened to Frank?
A.“Her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead.”
B.“Let him bear the shame alone, it's what he wants.”
C.“Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank took it away.”
D.“The eyes didn't liven, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks.”
(4)“She half-rose before sinking back …” (in Paragraph 6) shows that ________.
A.Fee was so heart-broken that she could hardly stand up
B.Fee didn't want to upset Paddy by visiting Frank
C.Fee couldn't leave her family to go to see Frank
D.Fee struggled between wanting to see Frank and respecting his wish

【題目】Golden lion tamarins (GLT) are among the most endangered animals on earth. They have fur which ranges in color from reddish orange to golden brown. They are the smallest monkeys in the world, and they weigh only half a kilogram. They move quickly through the forest. Each group of these delightful creatures needs a living space of about two square kilometres of thick forest. They are named after lions because of the ring of fur around their faces. Their only natural habitat(棲息地)is the Atlantic forest in Brazil.
Sadly,it is unusual to see a GLT nowadays, and there are very few of them left because they are hunted for the pet trade. In addition, the rapid expansion in the human population has resulted in the need for more land to grow crops, leaving them homeless.
GLTs live in close family groups. In the1970s,the Brazilian scientist,Eduardo Figueiro, realized what was happening to this rare animal, and began trying to save them, which has been supported by the government. He said,“It's so important to protect the animal, who evolved more than 20 million years ago. The worst problem is that the monkeys cannot travel without tree cover. It is trees that connect these groups. In this way,the monkeys can meet and socialize with each other. " Meanwhile , special patrols(巡邏) have been organized by government in the reserves to prevent hunting and forest fires.
As a result of these actions, the number of GLTs has grown to about 1500. There are also another 450 living in zoos throughout the world. Here they can be seen living in happy and close family groups, with the male gently taking much of the responsibility for the young.

【題目】請閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
C
Hong Kong, a city of seven million---and growing fast. By the year 2050 Hong Kong’s population will almost double. Where will these people live?
There's only one place to go---up. Fast forward 50 years. This is the tallest man-made structure on the planet. Its name: Millennium Tower. It would stand twice as tall as anything built before. Over 60 thousand people would live or work here. Millennium's designers think it represents the best solution for the coming population explosion.
It would cost ten billion dollars and consume more building materials than any single nation could produce. David Nelson, one of Millennium's key designers, said: “It would be a massive project and a world project. But to actually realize it resources would have to come from all over the globe. The challenge and the motivation for doing it would be to realize one of the world's largest and most complex construction projects.”
Millennium would be more complex than anything ever built. So its builders won't know for sure the building is safe until it's up, and they can't afford to make an error. Massive earthquakes have brought down entire cities in this part of the world. Can Millennium's designers make it immune to these quakes of the earth?
For Millennium, like all the other buildings, safety is just one concern among many. It will need to be a home, one that welcomes people in. Getting people into the building and making sure they have a great experience well be what makes Millennium successful, but how to do it? For the design team, the secret was to bring all the elements of city life within. Cafes and restaurants, theatres and stores would provide entertainment. Health clubs, even schools and medical clinics would also serve the towers’ residents.
Millennium's designers have proven something. Things that seem impossible today, might just become reality tomorrow. The engineering problems have, for the most part, already been solved. Our achievements are limited only by our imaginations.
(1)Why did the designers decide to build Millennium?
A.Because they wanted to build the world's most complex building.
B.Because Hong Kong's population will greatly increase.
C.Because Hong Kong is developing fast as an international city.
D.Because it can bring huge profit after it is put to use.
(2)What is TRUE about the project?
A.It will be completed in the year 2050.
B.It can accommodate all the residents in Hong Kong.
C.It is designed by designers from all over the globe.
D.It has to be strong enough to stand earthquakes.
(3)The success of Millennium mainly relies on_______.
A.how many resources will be used
B.how many nations will work together
C.whether people can enjoy their life in it
D.whether it is safe for people to live in
(4)How does the writer develop this passage?
A.By providing descriptions.
