What is the hottest topic at your school recently? In Hangzhou Yongjin Middle School, it’ s money.

The school held an activity called “making money” last weekend. About 200 Junior 1 and Junior 2 students were divided into 30 teams. They went out ___________________________. What did they choose to sell? Some sold newspapers;some chose bottled water;some sold environmentally friendly shopping bags and bamboo baskets.

Hu Qing’ s team decided to sell some useful books in front of the Children Activity Center. They thought parents would like to buy the books for their children. But unfortunately, they met urban management officers. The officers asked them to leave. “We played hide-and-seek with the offices for the whole morning,” said Hu. “Finally we had to give up.”

Wang Bing and her team sold ice cream in a square. They didn’ t meet any officers. But few people were interested in what they were selling. The team then put up a board saying “For Country Kids”. It worked. More people came to their stall(小攤). A foreigner even gave them 100 Yuan. “He didn’ t want any change. He said he wanted to help the children,” said Wang. “We were touched.” Later that day they gave the 100 Yuan and more to the “Project Hope” office.

Meng Zhaoxiang and his team were luckier. They sold all their cakes in four hours, spending 39.5 Yuan and getting back 80 Yuan. They made 40.5 Yuan. “It was not easy to make the money,” said Meng. “Some people just looked. Others just tasted but didn’ t buy. Now I know how hard it is for our parents to make money we need to lead happy lives. ”

Bollworms are a traditional threat to cotton crops.Young ones feed on the boll, the part of the

cotton plant that contains the seeds.

A bacterium known as Bt is able to kill bollworms and some other pests.Bt is short form for Bacillus thuringiensis. It was discovered in the early twentieth century.Farmers began using Bt as a natural pesticide(殺蟲(chóng)劑).

Then,in the 1990s,researchers found a way to grow cotton plants that contain a Bt gene. The genetically modified cotton plant produces toxins that kill bollworms.Farmers around the world are now growing an estimated fourteen million hectares of Bt cotton.

Cotton bollworms also attack other crops. But scientists in China recently reported that Bt cotton may help suppress bollworm in other crops growing nearby.

The study involved crops grown in six provinces of northern China between 1992 and 2008.The study area contained three million hectares of cotton and twenty-two million hectares of corn, peanuts, soybeans and vegetables.

The researchers say the study suggested that Bt cotton not only controls bollworm on the transgenic cotton, but also may reduce its presence on other crops. And that reduction, they say,may decrease the need for insecticide use in general.

But the researchers also pointed out concerns. They say bollworms could develop resistance to the cotton plants designed to resist them. And they noted that insects called mirids have become “key pests” of cotton in China. They said this is because of a decrease in pesticide use made possible by Bt cotton.

The researchers say they do not believe that Bt cotton alone can solve all insect problems.Instead, they say farmers in China should consider it just one part of pest management systems.

A new report says the number of foreign students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by three percent last year. This has been the first obvious increase since 2001.

American schools last fall had 583,000 foreign students. The record is 586,000. That was set in 2002 after many years of gains. But after that the numbers fell. The terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 led to more visa (??) requirements. Now stronger efforts are being made to get more foreign students to study in the United States.

China remained in second place in front of South Korea but behind India, which sent almost 84,000 students last fall. The number of Japanese fell sharply by nine percent, although it remained in fourth place.

There were three percent drops from Indonesia and Kenya, the only African country in the top twenty last year. But there were obvious increases from Saudi Arabia, Nepal and Vietnam. The number of Saudi students more than doubled, rising to nearly eight thousand.

For a sixth year, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles had the most foreign students. Columbia University in New York was second. Other schools in the top five were New York University, the University of Illinois and Purdue University.

Unlike American students in other countries, who often choose history and language study, the leading area of study in the USA was business and management. Second was engineering.

The new report also says more than 220,000 Americans studied in other countries. That was during the 2005-2006 school year. It was a record number, and an increase of eight and a half percent from the year before. But only five percent of them stayed for a full year.

1 After 2002, the number of foreign students in the USA fell mainly because ____ .

A. Americans were worried that foreign students might attack them

B. few American universities welcomed students from abroad

C. their own countries could offer them a better education

D. it was harder for foreign students to get permission to study in the USA

2 Which of the following Asian countries has the largest number of students studying in the USA?

3 Which subject is the most attractive to foreign students in the USA?

A. Business and management.       B. History.

C. Engineering.                        D. Language.

4We can learn from the passage that ____ .

A. Kenya is the only African country that has students in the USA

B. now foreign students are encouraged to study in the USA

C. the number of students studying in America always increases

D. the number of foreign students in the USA will keep increasing in the future

5 In which section of a newspaper could you most probably read this passage?

A. Culture.         B. Science.         C. Education.     D. Business.

Businesses are expected to cut spending dramatically through much of 2009. A number of economists, including those National City and Wachovia, don’t expect business investment, which make up about one – tenth of US economic activity, to decline through 2009. According to a survey of 679 chief financial officers by Duke University and CFO Magazine this month, US businesses expect to cut capital spending by more than 10% in the next 12 months, a sharp decrease from September, when the CFOs expected business investment to increase slightly.

John Graham, finance professor at Duke and director of the survey, says businesses are finding ways to repair existing machinery and buildings rather than replace equipment or move. They likely won’t increase their spending until they see concrete evidence that the economy is improving.

Those planning meeting for late winter and early spring are either buying fewer or less – expensive items, or they’re not buying at all. One client who usually spends about $ 80,000 on a conference each year is spending half that. Robert Coen, director of forecasting at media – analysis firm Magna, predicts a 4.5% drop in ad spending to $ 259 billion in 2009 on the heels of a 3.2% drop in 2008. “A recovery in US ad budgets will probably not get underway until 2010,” he says. Another negative for 2009: There aren’t any big ad – spending events such as the Olympics or national elections.

Declining business spending will hurt a number of industries but will be especially tough for the manufacturing sector. Nearly two – thirds of manufacturers expect revenue(稅收) to be unchanged or lower in 2009 than 2008, a survey from the Institute for Supply Management found.

1.According to John Graham, how did businesses to deal with the economy crisis?

A. They are spending less.

B. By increasing their business spending sharply.

C. By replacing old equipment with the new equipment.

D. By moving into the cheaper offices.

2.Why are the managers buying less – expensive items for their meetings?

A. To save money themselves.

B. To cut down on expenses and save for the companies.

C. To see the concrete evidence that the economy is on the mend.

D. To save money so they spend more on advertisements.

3.It can be inferred that in a year Olympics are held, many companies _________.

A. contribute more money to the poor        B. give the participants money

C. spend more money on advertising     D. cut down on advertising budgets

4.The best title for the passage is ____________.

A. Predictions about Buying New Equipment in 2009

B. Predictions about Conference Planning in 2009

C. Predictions about Advertising Spending in 2009

D. Predictions for Business Spending in 2009

Beijing is set to lift its12-year-old ban on fireworks for the traditional Spring Festival holidays, probably starting from next Chinese Lunar New Year in January 2006.

Zhou Jidong, director of the Legislative Affairs Office of the Beijing municipal government(市政府), told a press conference last Thursday that his office has completed the draft(草案) regulations on firework safety supervision.

Under the draft regulations , setting off fireworks will be allowed in the capital city’s eight downtown districts from the Eve of the Lunar New Year to Lantern Festival 15 days later. When the draft regulations were posted on the municipal government’s website for suggestions, local residents gave a total of 969 pieces of advice, with 70 per cent in favour of lifting the ban. Related surveys suggest local people who want to light fireworks during Spring Festival range from 50.4 per cent to 86.3 per cent.

In fact, the voice of opposition and criticism has never ended since the municipal government introduced the ban in 1993, considering pollution, noise, fire worries and personal injuries caused by letting off fireworks.

Opponents accused the government of introducing the ban only for the sake of facilitating its management role while disregarding the will of the people. Worse, they say, the ban threatened to break down the age—old traditions of celebrating Spring Festival among Chinese people.

Partly due to this endless objection, about 106 out of a total 282 Chinese cities that had followed Beijing’s lead in banning fireworks have already dropped the ban.
