Money, or the lack of it, changes everything, and that includes how people will be working out in 2010.
In these belt-tightening times 1 , cost-conscious workouts(鍛煉)at home and at the gym topped the list of fitness trends for this year in a survey, followed 2 by shorter, more time-efficient regimens, such as 3 boot camp(強力集中訓(xùn)練) and circuit training.
"People are looking 4 for ways to accomplish as much as possible with as little 5 time and money as necessary," said Cedric X. Bryant, chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise (ACE), which conducted the online poll of fitness professionals.
"Last year money was on the list but this 6 year the majority of the respondents put 7 it as one of the top," he added.
Bryant said some 600 ACE-certified fitness 8 professionals responded to the annual poll 9 , which the non-profit organization has been conducting for a decade.
Other money-saving measures 10 , such as the shift from personal training sessions to small group training 11 classes and in-home workouts 12 using smaller, more portable equipment, also made the list.
"Personal trainers are seeing they've got to respond to market needs 13 . Working with two to four clients at a 14 time they can charge less 15 but still get their hourly fee," Bryant said.
Boot-camp workouts and circuit training, both of which burn 16 calories while building strength and endurance(持久性), will be among the most popular trends in 2010, as time-constrained(受壓制的) consumers 17 seek shorter, more intense activities.
One bright spot is the rise of exergaming-type systems, like Nintendo's Wii Sports, Wii Fit and the PC-based Dancetown. Bryant says the fitness-based video games are turning up 18 in health clubs and senior centers.
Functional training workouts, which are geared to improving the quality of life and the ability to perform everyday tasks, will remain strong 19 , and the use of computerized tracking and online training and scheduling tools will increase 20 in the coming year.

Most people think of zoos as safe heavens for animals, where problems such as difficulty finding food and avoiding predators (食肉動物) don’t exist. Therefore, animals in zoos should live to a ripe old age.
But that may not be true for the largest land animals on earth. Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health. They develop diseases and they are even unable to have babies.
To learn more about how captivity (圈養(yǎng)) affects elephants, a team of international scientists compared the lifespans (壽命) of the zoo-born elephants with the lifespans of thousands of wild elephants. They also compared some Asian elephants living in zoos with some Asian elephants which work in logging camp (伐木場), over almost the same time period.
The team found that elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9 years, but elephants that died of natural causes lived an average of 56 years. Asian elephants followed a similar pattern. In zoos, they lived 18.9 years, while those in the logging camp lived 41.7 years.
Scientists don’t yet know why wild elephants seem to live so much better than their zoo-raised counterparts (同類). Georgia Mason, a biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada, who led the study, thinks stress and obesity (肥胖) may be to blame. Zoo elephants don’t get the same kind of exercise they would in the wild. Elephants’ social lives are also much different in zoos than in the wild, where they live in large family groups.
Most people believe that________.
A. animals in zoos should live a longer life
B. zoos are not good for animals to live in
C. zoos are not suitable for large animals
D. captivity can affect animals in many ways
The purpose of the international scientists is_________.
A. to compare the lifespans of different animals
B. to find out how captivity affects elephants
C. to learn the lifespans of male and female elephants
D. to compare the lifespans of elephants in different places
Which elephants live the longest according to the study?
A. Elephants born in zoos.
B. Elephants that live in the wild.
C. Elephants that work in logging camps.
D. Female Asian elephants in logging camps.
We can infer from the passage that_________.
A. elephants in zoos suffer less stress than those in the wild
B. elephants in zoos live an easy life
C. social lives are not important to elephants
D. zoo life can be stressful to elephants
What are the advantages to elephants in the wild according to the passage?
A. They face fewer problems. B. They can find food more easily.
C. They live in large social groups. D. They are freer to move.

Sheep, like turkeys and ostriches, are not considered the cleverest animals. British scientists said last Wednesday human may have underestimated(低估) the woolly creatures. They could be much smarter than we think.
Researchers at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, southern. England, have shown that animals have a good memory system and are extremely good at recognizing faces--which they think is a sure sign of intelligence.
Behavioral scientist Keith Kendrick and his friends trained 20 sheep to recognize and distinguish(區(qū)別) 25 pairs of sheep faces and used electrodes(電極) to measure their brain activity, which showed they could remember 50 faces for up to two years.
"If they can do that with faces, the fact is that they have to have reasonable intelligence, otherwise, what is the point of having a system for remembering anything else," Kendrick said in an interview.
So hours of seemingly mindless eating grass may not be so mindless after all.
Kendrick believes sheep got their reputation as dumb animals because they live in large groups and do not appear to have much ind
ividuality and are frightened of just about everything.
All animals, including humans, once they are frightened don't tend to show signs of intelligent action," he explained.
In research reported in the science journal Nature, Kendrick and his team showed that sheep, like humans, have a specialized system in the brain, which allows them to distinguish between many different faces that look extremely similar.
"The most important findings of the study is that they are able, both from a behavioral point of view and from looking at the way the brain is organized, to remember a large number of faces of individuals for a very long time," said Kendrick. "It is a very strange system. They are showing similar abilities in many ways to humans. "
From the first paragraph we can find that ______.
A. people used to think sheep are smarter than the other animals
B. people used to raise sheep in a wrong way
C. people don't consider sheep as clever animals
D. people have done a lot of research on sheep
From what Kendrick said in the interview we learn that ________.
A. scientists have learned a lot about sheep's intelligence
B. scientists have learned little about sheep's intelligence
C. scientists can't do anything more about sheep's memory
D. scientists don't have to research animals' memory
As is shown in the passage _________.
A. sheep are among the weak animals
B. it is not right for people to raise sheep in groups
C. when sheep eat grass in the fields their minds may be active
D. if people feel frightened, they may become more brave
When scientists found that sheep show similar abilities in many ways to humans they may think it _____.
A. worrying B. moving C. frightening D. interesting

In 1837, the historian Carlyle made the first recorded use of the word " queue" (排隊). He spoke of the French and their "habit of standing in a queue". Forty years later Paris was the best place to wait in line.
However, queuing became popular in Britain too. The Second World War was the golden age of queuing, and people joined any line in the hope that it was a queue for something to buy. This was the source of many Second World War jokes:
Shopkeeper to customer : Excuse me, miss, are you pregnant (懷孕)?
Customer : Well, I wasn't when I joined the queue.
Today, according to research in America, we (in Britain) can spend up to 5 years of our lives queuing- as compared to twelve months looking for things we have lost. But things may be changing. Many people no longer have the patience to stand in a queue. The law of the jungle (叢林) has begun to operate at bus stops, with people using their arms to push others out of the way.
One way to make life easier is to introduce "queue management". Customers at supermarket cheese counters can now take a ticket with a number which appears on a screen when it is their turn. And while they wait for their number, they can do a bit of shopping.
In some booking offices there is also a system telling customers how long they may have to wait before they are served.
One of the latest technical progress is the use of an electronic scanner (電子識別器) which can read all the contents of your shopping basket or trolley in just a few seconds. If these become popular, queuing in supermarkets may become a thing of the past.
But some people just like queuing. One man queued all night for Harrods famous January sale, and then returned home for breakfast at nine o' clock the next morning without going into the shop.
68. The joke in Paragraph 2 implies that the young woman _______.
A. has been waiting in the queue for a long time B. doesn't need to stand in the queue
C. enjoys standing in the queue D. has stood in the wrong line
69. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. The British spend more time queuing than looking for lost things.
B. The Americans criticized the British for their way of queuing.
C. The British are always patient when they wait in line.
D. People queue only when they want to buy something.
70. The British try to solve the problem of queuing by all the following EXCEPT _______.
A. making a law to prevent queuing
B. telling the customers the waiting time
C. using numbered tickets to put the customers in order
D. checking the price of the goods customers buy with a scanner
71. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. queue management doesn't work well B. there is still queuing in England
C. we don't see much queuing in Paris D. the French like queuing more than the British
