Being alone in outer space can be 36 . That is one reason why astronauts on solo(單獨(dú)的) space flights were given plenty of work to keep them 37 . They were also in constant communication with people on the earth. 38 , being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine(潛水艇) voyages. It will also happen on 39 space flights in the future. Will there be special problems of adjustment under such conditions?
Scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have also found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of 40 is. When men are 41 together for a long period, they begin to feel 42 . Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. Apparently, although no one wants to be 44 all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of 45 or stress.
People who are well-adjusted are able to 46 stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in 47 our astronauts. It was a beautiful day at the beach—blue sky, gentle wind, calm sea.I knew these things because a man sitting five feet from me was shouting them into his mobile phone, like a play-by-play announcer (實(shí)況解說(shuō)員).
“IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY,” he shouted.“THE SKY IS BLUE, AND THERE’S A GENTLE WIND, AND THE WATER IS CALM, AND…”
Behind me, a woman, her mobile phone pressed to her ear was walking back and forth.
“She DIDN’T,” she was saying.“No.She DIDN’T.She DID? Really? Are you SERIOUS? She did NOT.She DID? No she…”
And so on.This woman had two children, who were playing in the sea.I found myself watching them, because the woman surely was not.A huge squid could have caught and snatched the children, and this woman would not have noticed.Or, if she had noticed, she’d have said, “Listen.I have to go, because a huge squid just……No! She didn’t ! She DID? No! She……”
And next to me, the play-by-play man would have said: “…AND A HUGE SQUID JUST ATE TWO CHILDREN, AND I’M GETTING A LITTLE SUNBURNED, AND …”
It used to be that the major trouble at the beach was the fellow who brought a boom box (便攜式錄音機(jī)) and turned it up so loud that the bass notes caused seagulls to explode. But at least you knew where these fellows were; you never know which beachgoers have mobile phones. You’ll settle next to what appears to be a sleeping sunbather, or even (you hope) a corpse , and you’ll lie happily on your towel, and you’ll get all the way to the second sentence of your 467-page book before you fall asleep to the hypnotic surge of the surf (催人入夢(mèng)的潮聲), and …
BREEP! BREEP! The corpse sits up, feels urgently for its mobile phone, and shouts “Hello! I’m at the beach! Yes! It’s nice! Very peaceful! What? She did? No, she didn’t! She DID? No, she…”
Loud mobile-phoners never seem to get urgent calls.Just once, I’d like to hear one of them say, “Hello? Yes, this is Dr.Johnson.Oh, Dr.Smith.You’ve opened the abdominal cavity (腹腔)? Good! Now the appendix should be right under the … What? No, that’s the liver.Don’t take THAT out, ha ha! Oh, you did? My God! OK, now listen carefully…”

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2013屆江西南昌10所省重點(diǎn)中學(xué)高三第二次模擬突破沖刺(七)英語(yǔ)試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解
Teenagers are under a lot of pressure to be thin. They resort to starving, vomiting and eating only diet foods to try and be thin. Television is a big influence on them. They watch shows like Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place and feel they need to look as thin as the actresses on these shows. Society is brainwashing young people into believing that being thin is important and necessary.
Diet commercials are constantly appearing on our television screens telling us that once we lose weight, we will be happy. While you’re standing at the grocery store you are surrounded by magazines claiming to have the newest and best diet. Each month another new diet appears claiming to be the diet to end all diets. If diets really worked, then why are there so many of them? The reason a new diet pops up each month, is that last’s month’s diets did not work. The truth of the matter is that DIETS DON’T WORK.
The diet and fashion industries are not totally to blame for society’s obsession with thinness. We are the ones keeping them in business. We buy into the idea that we can attain the “ideal” body image. We allow ourselves to believe the lies being thrown at us constantly. We are throwing away our hard earned money trying to live up to the standards that society has set for us. It’s unfortunate, but in today’s society, people have forgotten that it’s what’s inside a person that counts, not what’s on the outside. We need to start loving and accepting each other for who we are, not what we look like.
Once again, I would like to stress the fact that diets don’t work. Eating three healthy meals a day, a few snacks and doing moderate exercise, will allow your body to go to its natural set point. Next time you decide that you are going to start another diet because you feel you are too fat, stop, sign up for a self-esteem class instead. That would be money well spent.

A.Because teenagers are under a lot of pressure to be thin. |
B.Because there are more and more fat teenagers. |
C.Because the diets have no effect. |
D.Because teenagers are fascinated by the newest and best diet. |
A.if your diet doesn’t work, the only thing you can do is to accept your body image . |
B.a(chǎn)ttending a self-esteem class will help you keep fit. |
C.we shouldn’t pay attention to the size of our body. |
D.what’s inside a person is much more important than his/her appearance. |
A.persuasion | B.summarization | C.a(chǎn)rgumentation | D.description |

How Writing Things Down Can Change Your Life
??? What do you write down? For most of us, writing consists of emails, task lists, and perhaps the odd work project. However, making time to write down certain things, such as our daily experiences, our goals, and our feelings can change the way we live our lives.
Here are five different ways that writing things down can change your life, and what you can do to get the most out of each.
1._____________________
David Allen, productivity speaker and author of Getting Things Done, recommends doing what he calls a “core dump”. This involves writing down every task, activity, and project you need to address. This could range from picking up milk on the way home, to a multi-person project at work. Writing down every “to-do” item you can think of clears space in your head for more important topics.
??? You can also use a technique called “morning pages”, which was pioneered by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way. Morning pages involves completing three pages (around 750 words) of stream-of-consciousness writing. Through doing this first thing each morning, you clear your head in preparation for the day’s most important thinking.
2. __________________________
Writing down what’s on your mind is a great way to work through inner conflict or process your feelings around a particular situation. It’s similar to talking a situation through with a friend, and it’s a useful way of strengthening your self-soothing (自我安慰)abilities.
3._________________________________
If you keep a journal and regularly write down your thoughts and feelings, you’ll soon have a record of your experiences that you might otherwise have forgotten. Keeping a journal can also enhance your levels of self-trust. When you can look back and see how successfully you’ve traversed and dealt with important decisions and tricky situations in the past, you’ll feel more confident in your ability to do so in the future.
4._____________________________________
If you write down everything you need to do in a particular day or week, you gain an additional sense of satisfaction, when having completed the task, you can cross the item off our list. Feeling productive enhances your productivity and fosters a sense of achievement and progress.
5.____________________________________
No matter what’s going on in your outside world, when you write things down, you enter a world of possibility, which helps you stay motivated and gives you space to think big and aim high. When you write things down, you have a chance to explore dreams and ambitions that you might not feel safe revealing to anyone else yet. You also have a space to keep track of all your ideas and desires so you can return to them later.
