【題目】閱讀理解The World's Coolest Places
There's nothing wrong with a relaxing week at the beach. But travel can also be an education, a step toward empathy(共鳴) and international understanding, so for those longing to escape the crowds this summer, encounter new worlds and return with a tale, here're a few little-known travel destinations I recommend.

⒈Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands.
This coral island in the Pacific Ocean, site of nuclear weapons tests decades ago, is now brilliantly beautiful and the deserted white-sand beaches are lined with coconut palms and scattered with seashells. The island is a reminder of the redemptive(救贖的) power of time and nature.

⒉Potosi, Bolivia.
No city in Latin America is more beautiful than Potosi, Bolivia, where Europeans discovered a huge silver mountain centuries ago. Tourists can descend(下降) the silver mines to experience extremely hot and dusty tunnels, talk to the miners, get a glimpse of life image for Bolivians there and have new empathy for the miners.

⒊Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Maybe our family start at Victoria Falls, which wets you with spray, making Niagara Falls a backyard stream. Then we rent a car and make our way to Hwange National Park, empty of people but crowded with various animals. Zimbabwe has fewer tourists than South Africa, and there's less crime as well.

⒋Amritsar, India.
The Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine(神殿), is a delightful place to contemplate the draw of faith. A four-century-old temple set in a lake attracts Sikhs(錫克教徒) worldwide. Walking the circuit of the lake, with your head covered, and putting up in temple buildings can be a full experience.

(1)If you want to experience the hardship of the miners, you should choose to visit.
A.Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands
B.Potosi, Bolivia
C.Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
D.Amritsar, India
(2)Bikini Atoll is different from other attractions recommended by the author in that.
A.it is famous for its natural scenery
B.it is in the Pacific Ocean
C.it is well-known for its silver mines
D.it is related to religion
(3)Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?
A.Victoria Falls are in Hwange National Park
B.The Golden Temple is a holy place for Sikhs
C.Tourists can have new empathy for silver miners in Potosi
D.Tourists can enjoy themselves on white-sand beaches in Bikini Atoll

【答案】
(1)B
(2)B
(3)A
【解析】本文是一篇說明文,介紹了世界上四個最酷的地方。
(1)考查細節(jié)理解。根據2.Potosi, Bolivia部分中的”Tourists can descend(下降) the silver mines to experience extremely hot and dusty tunnels, talk to the miners, get a glimpse of life image for Bolivians there and have new empathy for the miners.“可知如果你想體驗礦工的艱苦生活,你可以拜訪Potosi, Bolivia。故選B。
(2)考查細節(jié)理解。根據1.Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands.部分中的”This coral island in the Pacific Ocean, site of nuclear weapons tests decades ago, is now brilliantly beautiful and the deserted white-sand beaches are lined with coconut palms and scattered with seashells.“可知Bikini Atoll不同于其他景點在于它在太平洋里。故選B。
(3)考查推理判斷。根據3.Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.部分中的”Maybe our family start at Victoria Falls, which wets you with spray, making Niagara Falls a backyard stream. Then we rent a car and make our way to Hwange National Park,“由此可知Victoria Falls不在Hwange National Park,所以A是錯誤的。

Injuries and deaths caused by driving after drinking are preventable. Sadly, actions by the police can only catch a small number of drunk drivers on the roads. It is up to each person to make the decisions. 【1】 So we should help guide our friends and persuade them to avoid driving after drinking. Here are some tips.

Start talking to the person early. With every drink, judgment becomes increasingly uncontrolled. 2 So as soon as your friend starts drinking, you should try to persuade him to make a plan to get home safely. Remember, after he gets drunk, he may not listen to you.

Help the person realize he is drunk. Talk to him and show him that he is increasingly clumsy. 3 For example, ask who you can call to pick him up, or what public transport he would like to use. If he knows he is drunk, he may follow your advice.

Make last efforts. If all else fails and a drunk person wants to drive home, threaten to call the police or take his keys. 4 When he is not concentrated, take his keys. This may make it easier to convince him to take a cab home. Remember, don’t give him the keys even if he’s angry.

5 If you once drove home after you got drunk, your friend may not listen to you. So in order to succeed in persuading your friend to avoid driving after drinking, you should behave yourself first.

A. Ask him where his keys are.

B. Set a good role model.

C. Give him an alternative way to get home.

D. But it isn’t easy to make the right decisions.

E. Make him realize drinking makes him look like a fool.

F. The police will come to help you out once you call them.

G. It means the more one drinks, the less likely that he will listen to you.

City Life in Thailand is much like city life in the United States. People live in tall buildings or in houses close together. But outside the cities, life is different. People usually live on farms far apart from one another. They grow their own food or buy fresh food almost every day at the market. But the market is not in a building. It is a floating market located on a river.
Lamai and her family live on a farm. They grow fruits and vegetables and sell them at the market each day. Long before the sun comes up, Lamai and her brother help their parents. They pick out fruits and vegetables and clean them. Then they load everything into a long boat.
Their boat is ready by about 6:00 a.m. Lamai and her mother row to the closest floating market. On the way the water is still and peaceful. Lamai sees the bright sun beginning to shine.
Soon Lamai hears laughing and yelling in the distance. Her mother rows the boat around a corner. Suddenly they are at the floating market. Hundreds of boats are gathered at a wide place in the river. Lamai's mother is selling bananas and ripe tomatoes today. For Lamai a trip to the market is more than just a chance to sell or buy something. It is a chance for her to talk to her friends.

【題目】Did you know the meaning of a word may change over time? Many English words we know now had different meanings a long time ago. One example is the word nice.

Around the year 1300, nice was first used in English to mean “stupid”. Two hundred years later, nice began to carry a “better” meaning. If people said a book was written nicely, they meant the book was written “clearly” or “carefully”, not “stupidly”. After 1800, nice began to take its meaning like kind or “friendly”. Since then, people have thought of nice as a word with good meanings.

A good change of a word’s meaning like this example of nice is called AMELIORATION. Though we don’t use nice to mean “stupid” any more, it is fun to know how much a word’s meaning can change from its start!

For more examples of AMELIORATION,see next page.

11300 years ago, a “nice person” was believed to be .

A. careful B. friendly

C. stupid D. clever

A. What nice used to mean.

B. Why the meaning of nice changed.

3AMELIORATION means a word’s meaning .

A. can change from its start

B. changes from bad to good

C. changes from good to bad

D. remains the same over a long time

4Which of the following is most likely to appear on the next page?

A. The word terrific used to mean ‘"terrible”, but now it means “excellent”.

B. The word silly used to mean “happy”, but now it means “stupid”.

C. You may wonder why a word’s meaning changes over time.

D. Besides AMELIORATION, a word’s meaning may change in other ways.
