I am a person who does not like to wait.I don' t like lines, being put on hold when making a phone call, arriving at an appointment to find that my companion will be delayed and of course, I don * t like waiting rooms.

However, I realize that my agony(痛苦) will not be good for me, as an increasingly, crowded world can only mean one thing—more waiting.

Owing to this, I have taken a measure and decided to turn my disappointment to productive ends.In short, I am looking for what I call "waiting in line books".

These are books that contain material designed for being read in shortened words, so there is no extended story line to lose track of.Another requirement is that they be small enough to slip neatly into my back pocket.

The other day I went to the supermarket.Convinced that the rain would keep most people away, I was surprised to see that the place was crowded with shoppers.Every checkout was open—and jammed! But I could take out my pocket book and go to work.

The more the world demands that I wait, the more I learn from my waiting library.Look at these titles: One Hundred Things Every American Should Know; The Poetry of Robert Frost; Living Thoughts of Leading Thinkers; Still More Toasts.I have learned interesting and enriching things and much knowledge from these books.

On a recent visit to the general store, I placed my order at the counter along with six or seven other people. The one female employee seemed to have her hands full as she rushed about."Just be patient," she said to me.

No problem.I quietly opened my dictionary of prose (散文) and poetical quotations. Perhaps the other customers regarded me as a bookish, lonely soul. But little did they realize that I was enjoying the company of Shakespeare, Thoreau, Homer and Ben Johnson.

Finally, a cell phone
That’s… a phone
With rates as low as $3.75 per week !
“Well, I finally did it. I finally decided to enter the digital age and get a cell phone. My kids have been annoying me and the last straw was when my car broke down, and I was stuck by the highway for an hour before someone stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, I almost changed my mind. The phones all have cameras, computers and a “global-positioning” something or other that’s supposed to spot me from space. Goodness, all I want to do is to be able to talk to my grandkids! The people at the store weren’t much help. They couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t want a phone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were confusing, and expensive… and the contract (合同)lasted for two years! I’d almost given up until a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Now, I have the convenience and safety of being about to stay in touch with a phone I can actually use. ”
Affordable plans that I can understand---and no contract to sign (簽訂)! Unlike other cell phones,Jitterbug has plans that make sense. Why should I pay for minutes I’m never going to use? And if I do talk more than I plan,I won’t find myself with no minutes like my friend who has a prepaid phone. Best of all, there is no contract to sign, so I’m not locked in for years at a time. The US-based customer service is second to none. And the phone gets service anywhere in the country.

John Steinbeck once said, “All Americans believe they are born fishermen. For a man to admit to a distaste in fishing would be like denouncing (公開指責(zé)) mother – love or hating moonlight.”

I can’t say that I’m the biggest John Steinbeck fan. Actually, the only thing I can ever remember reading by him was “The pearl” when I was in middle school, but I couldn’t agree more with the man when it comes to fishing. Whether I am on a boat in the middle of the Lay Lake, fishing off the shores of the Florida Keys for tarpon or catching rainbow trout in the Shoshone River of Wyoming, fishing is my life.

According to the American Sports Fishing Association, the fishing industry brings in more than $ 116 billion per year from fishermen across the country.

Though a beautiful picture to imagine, fishing is much more than that. Fishing is a way of life for many people and a way to escape everyday stress. Being a fisherman makes me a member of a wonderful group of people extending to all walks of life. Even President Obama can be found fishing on his farm in Texas with his good friend Roland Martin when the job gets too stressful.

I can remember fishing with my grandfather when I was 5 years old on his boat at Lake Mitchell. Although I didn’t understand what I was doing, I did know that my grandfather was happy and that made me happy. Since then I’ve spent the past 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama.

After days of practice, before and after work, I slowly developed an understanding of fishing. My boss, Ric Horst, took me back to the Shoshone, and I managed to bring in a 19–inch cutthroat trout. Fishing with Ric was a life–changing experience for me. He not only showed me how to fish correctly, but also told me how fishing could be a way to escape your problems.

Since then, prime–time season seems to take forever to arrive.

Now, with the ending of February and beginning of March in sight, the excitement of heading out Lake Tuscaloosa or Lake Lurleen before classes and catching something has finally returned.

A.The author is at most 21 years old.

D.President Obama often goes fishing in public in order to collect idea for his job.

A.people can get to know VIPs when fishing.

B.people can smooth away all the troubles by fishing

C.Fishing is a way of communication

5..What is the purpose of the writing?

A.To describe the writer’s experience and understanding of fishing.

Modern Manners

Philip Howard answers your questions on contemporary etiquette (禮儀)

Philip Howard,

When my friend and I (two ladies of a certain age) go out to have a meal, she always leaves an extremely large tip. At times, the tip will equal the amount of one of the main dishes—sometimes it comes to about 30 per cent of the bill. I feel 15—20 per cent is adequate for services offered and depending on the type of restaurant. At a cafe I would like to leave 15 per cent or a bit more depending on the service and etc. A larger tip would be appropriate if we are in a big city or a nicer place. My friend says “Well, I am sure they are not driving a Mercedes (奔馳汽車).” Well, neither am I, and how does she know? Who is correct and how can I make changes? I might add I do truly feel tipping should be based on good service, and also if you frequent a place and know the staff a larger tip is OK. I would never hesitate to tip a waitperson. I always leave to the higher side.

Yours,

Barbara Bade

Barbara Bade,

Americans are more generous tippers than the British. I suspect that 10 per cent for a tip is about normal in the UK. Tipping is a strange survival in our age of supposed equality and minimum wages. Your friend has a generous nature and deep purse. I do not see why you cannot let her tip whatever she wants, and do your own thing. I agree that a tip should be a reward for good service and general good feeling. If the service is rotten and the meal a disaster, we should withhold a tip and explain why we are doing so. Few of us have the chutzpah (厚顏) to do this. Sensible restaurants have a box for tips, so that they are shared out among the staff, including those in the kitchens whom we do not see. (I trust that the management does not receive the money as extra profit.) I look forward to the day when waiters and other servants are paid a good enough living wage, so that they do not have to depend on the generosity of strangers to survive. To wait at table is just as honorable a way to earn a living in this wicked world. If you are pleased with the meal and cheerful service, you should tip as handsomely as your purse affords. I don’t suppose that your waiter / waitress is driving a Mercedes, even in the States.

Yours,

Philip Howard

60. We can learn from the first letter that Barbara prefers ___________.

A. changing her own ideas on how to tip waiters

B. leaving a bigger tip to the familiar waitpersons

C. eating at a café rather than in a nice restaurant

D. saving as much money as possible for herself

61. It can be inferred that Barbara’s friend tips waiters heavily ________.

A. to show that she is well off                              B. because they are thought to be poorly paid

C. to show that she is generous                          D. because they have offered her full service

62. Besides quality of service, Philip regards __________ as principles of tipping.

A. taste of food and amount of one’s money

B. taste of food and the number of servants

C. generosity of strangers and the number of servants

D. amount of one’s money and generosity of strangers

I am a senior in college, and my major is elementary education. But the thing is, even though I am
going to become a teacher I have a horrible fear of giving presentations. My main problem is that I shake, which causes my paper to move when I hold it. Also I feel my heart beating so fast that I almost cannot
hear myself or pay attention to anything else. In my other semesters I only had one presentation which
only lasted for a few minutes. This, however, is my professional semester and there are about three
presentations per class and some of them have to be 30 minutes long! Now I feel like I'm in the wrong
field because of how nervous I become. But the thing is, I have already had students taught and have a lot of experience with children, and when I am around children I am completely comfortable. Children don't
judge people and I just don't get nervous around them. That is why I don't understand why they make us
do so many presentations in front of our peers (同齡人) as if they were children!
I am just so nervous about getting up in front of my class this semester! I can't stop fearing it and I'm
set for failure. It's strange. I have a good friend in my class and I seem to be more nervous with her being
there than when she is not there! Maybe that's because I don't know or don't really care about the rest of
the students in the class.
1. The author will have to ____ in his / her future job.

2. Which of the following words can best describe the author's feeling when he / she is giving
presentations?
A. Worried.
B. Tense.
C. Exciting.
D. Disappointed.
3. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ____.
A. the author only feels nervous when his / her friend is present
B. the author performs better when his / her friend is not there
C. the author is disliked by most of his / her classmates
D. the author is eager to get help and support from his / her friend
4. The text is mainly about ____.
A. how to get rid of the fear of giving presentations
B. an interesting experience of the author in the professional semester
C. stories about the relationship between the author and his / her friend
D. the author's problem of giving presentations
