I arrived at my mother’s home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt(被子)after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the
“Oh?” Mom said, “That’s Mama’s quilt.”
I spread the quilt. It looked at if a group of school children had pieced it together; irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right.
“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn’t look like any of the quilts she had made.
“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I’m still working on it. See, this is what I’ve done so far.”
I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the center of the quilt, she had stitched(縫) a piece of cloth with these words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn’t get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”
“Ooh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother’s quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll(死亡人數(shù))could have been much worse.
More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity(強度)that shook America in 1988 claimed 25, 000 victims.
Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city's highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city's buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes(抗震).
Despite the good news, civil engineers aren't resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints(藍圖)for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place.
In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, which bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake's vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.
The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.
6.One reason why the loss of lives in the Log Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that______.
A.new computers had been installed in the buildings
B.it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highways
C.large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holiday
D.improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways
7.The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to______.
A. counterbalance(起平衡作用)an earthquake's action on the building
B. predict(預(yù)測)the coming of an earthquake with accuracy
C. help strengthen the foundation of the building
D. measure the impact of an earthquake's vibrations
8.The smart buildings discussed in the passage________.
A. would cause serious financial problems
B. would be worthwhile though expensive
C. would reduce the complexity of architectural design
D. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes
9.It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing(使……最小)the damage caused by earthquakes, attention should be focused on________.
A.the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital construction
B.the development of flexible building materials
C.the reduction of the impact of ground vibrations
D.early forecasts of earthquakes
10.The author's main purpose in writing the passage is to________.
A.compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the US
B.encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use of computers
C.outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materials
D.report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildings

Last Sunday I made a visit to some new neighbors down the block. No specific purpose in mind, just an opportunity to sit at the kitchen table, have some tea and chat. As I did so, it occurred to me how rare the Sunday visit has become.
When I was a kid in the New Jersey of the 1960s, Sunday visits were routine. Most stores were closed and almost nobody worked. My family normally traveled eight city blocks to the home of my grandmother, where adults would sit on the front porch and chat while we children played hide-and-seek.
The Sunday visit was something to desire strongly. It was the repetition to church, our reward for and hour of devotion, and opportunity to take advantage of the fact that Dad was not at work, we were not in school, and there were no chores that couldn’t wait until Monday. Sunday was, indeed, which means that there was one day when everyone seemed to have time for everybody else.
Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to consider that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association.① In my childhood, it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visit someone else’s home on Sunday. But now the question is, “What do you plan to Do this Sunday?” The answer can range from going to the mall to participating in a road to jetting to Montreal for lunch. If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to family,” such and answer would feel strange, an echo from another era.
I suppose I should be grateful to live in Maine, a state of small towns, abundant land tight relationships. Even though folks work as hard here as they do anywhere else, the state’s powerfully rural cast(特質(zhì))still harbors at least remnants(剩余部分)of the ethic of yesterday’s America, where people had to depend on one another in the face of economic vagaries(反復(fù)無常的情況)and a challenging environment.②
【小題1】The writer’s general impression of the Sunday in the past was a day when_________.
A.everyone would pay a visit to some relative far away |
B.everyone seemed to be free and could have some leisure |
C.Dad was not at work while Mom was busy cleaning the house |
D.nearly every adult would go to church and children were not at school |
A.People nowadays prefer staying at home on Sunday |
B.People in the city dislike being disturbed on Sunday |
C.Such answers are rarely heard in our modern society |
D.Visiting someone on Sunday might take a lot of time |
A.suffer more from economic depression and the changed environment |
B.have abandoned their tradition and lived an absolute new life |
C.have tense relationships with each other |
D.a(chǎn)lways help each other when they are in need |
A.Unsatisfied | B.confused | C.Respectful | D.Thankful |

C
As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. “The woods” was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend’s house and found him not at home, his mother might say, “Oh, he’s out in the woods,” with a tone of airy acceptance. It’s similar to the tone people sometimes use nowadays to tell me that someone I’m looking for is on the golf course or at the gym, or even “away from his desk.” For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探險). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though, seemed to have less system than the historic kind: something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Italian burial mound.
Often we got “l(fā)ost” and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical: the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly — tall beeches, easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.
48. The author and his fiends were often out in the woods to ______.
A. spend their free time B. play golf and other sports
C. keep away from their parents D. escape from doing their schoolwork
49. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. The activities in the woods were well planned.
B. Human history is not the result of exploration.
C. The author explored in the woods aimlessly.
D. Exploration should be a systematic activity.
50. The underlined word “skeptical” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. calm B. doubtful C. serious D. optimistic
51. From the last paragraph, we can learn that ________.
A. they usually didn’t go to the woods in winter
B. the author and his friends are of the same age
C. all high school students would go dancing on Friday evenings
D. they stopped going to the woods because they were adults now
52. How does the author feel about his childhood?
A. Happy but short. B. Lonely but memorable.
C. Boring and meaningless. D. Long and unforgettable.

Lightning flashed through the darkness over Donald Lubeck’s bedroom skylight. The 80-year-old retired worker was shaken by a blast of thunder. It was 11 p.m. The storm had moved directly over his two-story wood home in the rural town of Belchertown, Massachusetts. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping. Lubeck padded down the stairs barefoot and opened the door to the basement, and flames exploded out.
Lubeck fled back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom, but the phone didn’t work. Lubeck realized he was trapped. “I started panicking,” he says.
His daughter and young granddaughters, who lived with him, were away for the night. No one will even know I’m home, he thought. His house was three miles off the main road and so well hidden by pines that Lubeck knew calling for help would be fruitless.
Up a hill about a third of a mile away lived Lubeck’s closest neighbors, Jeremie Wentworth and his wife. Wentworth had been lying down, listening to the radio when it occurred to him that the sound was more like a smoke detector. He jumped out of bed, grabbed a cordless phone and a flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the noise.
He dialed 911. “Is anyone there?” he called out as he approached the house. Wentworth knew that Lubeck lived in the house.
Then he heard, “Help me! I’m trapped!” coming from the balcony off Lubeck’s bedroom.
“I ran in and yelled,‘Don, where are you?’ Then I had to run outside to catch my breath.”
After one more attempt inside the house, he gave up and circled around back. But there was no way to get to him. “I shined the flashlight into the woods next to an old shed and noticed a ladder,” says Wentworth. He dragged it over to the balcony and pulled Lubeck down just as the second floor of the house collapsed.
Wentworth and Lubeck don’t run into each other regularly, but Lubeck now knows that if he ever needs help, Wentworth will be there.
Lubeck still chokes up when he tells the story. “I was alone,” he says. “Then I heard the most beautiful sound in my life. It was Jeremie.”
1.According to the text, Lubeck___________.
A.stayed calm in the fire B.couldn’t find a safe way out
C.lived on the first floor D.called for help in the fire
2.How did Wentworth help Lubeck escape?
A.He called 911.
B.He went upstairs and took Lubeck out.
C.He put out the fire.
D.He used a ladder and pulled Lubeck down.
3.Which of the following factors was not mentioned in the text that almost cost Lubeck’s life?
A.He was living in his wood home alone that night.
B.The storm was too heavy and the fire was too fierce.
C.He lived far from the main road and was surrounded by pines.
D.He was too frightened to escape from the danger.
4.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.A near neighbour is better than a distant cousin.
B.A good way to get a narrow escape.
C.God helps those who help themselves.
D.Blood is thicker than water.
