Anger is a natural emotion that everyone experiences in life. Some researchers believe the first
sound a baby makes when born could be a sign of anger. Anger may be the original or first emotion
we feel and respond to. Imagine, before hunger, thirst, love, desire or any other describable feeling,
we may experience anger. Not only is anger a natural emotion, it is in many cases a perfectly healthy
emotion. Anger can motivate people to make very positive changes in their lives. Anger can motivate
individuals to do positive and memorable acts. Sometimes we have to be angry at injustice, at evil, or
even at nature, before we can do what needs to be done to correct wrongs or make things better. But
of course, that is not how we usually think of anger.
Most people think of anger as an emotion we must keep under control. Children are sometimes
sent to their rooms or punished for expressing anger in an excessive (過渡的) way. Parents tell a child
to "get control" of himself when the child shows anger. We may be angry with friends or at work, but
we know it is usually inappropriate to show it. We have to control the anger or suffer what may be the
negative consequences. Very early in life, we learn that anger is something that must be controlleD.
We learn this for a good reason.
We know that uncontrolled anger can lead to fights, car accidents, bad relationships with others,
unacceptable social behavior, and many other problems. Many experts say that if one holds his anger
in, it can even lead to severe mental and physical health problems. So what can we do to understand
and calm this natural emotion that we call anger?
Experts offer many solutions to excessive and harmful anger. Some of these solutions include talking
about what triggers the anger with someone you trust and is a good friend, leaving a situation that causes
anger, beating on a pillow, exercising more in one's daily life, therapy, medication, and many other methods. Whatever solution one chooses, it is good to know that by trying to find the solution to the problem of
anger, the first step in the right direction to solving the anger problem has been taken.

For an American, or a foreigner here, any chance to have a social life is welcome. But
what happened last night made me think I may be better off having no life while I'm in
    Baghdad.
Friday evening,l was on my way with an American journalist friend to his welcome party.
When we got to a checkpoint,we were told to get out of the car to be searched, which is
normal procedure. We waited under a tent,as our car was examined on the other side
of a wall. We couldn't see what was happening but we figured we would hit the road soon.
But the search was taking longer than expected, probably because of a car bomb
threat that had been reported earlier. Then we noticed the officers put their helmets(頭盔)
    on. Never a good sign.
Our Iraqi driver then noticed that our other Iraqi driver and guards who were in a
second car were standing facing a wall. We had gotten separated from them at the
checkpoint. We told two American officers that they were with us. They whispered
with each other and then walked away.
A few minutes later, an officer walked toward us and asked us to follow him. He
said to me, "If you make any moves,l will take you down hard. "
That's when l knew we were actually thought to be doing something terrible. We
were told to sit in a row on the sidewalk, facing the street. I noticed across the street
were our other driver and guards. They were also in a row, but in a kneeling position
with their hands on their heads.
I was shocked. The only explanation could be that our guards had been at the
shooting range in the morning, so the police dog may have picked something up from
that. I also wondered why our Iraqi fellows on the other side of the street were being
treated worse than us when it was our car that was under suspicion(懷疑) .
After the end of the hour long suffering, we were allowed to leave. No longer in
the mood for the party,we all went home.
    1. The author and his people were going to the party____.
    A. in two cars
    B. in one car
    C. under the protection of police officers
    D. for the purpose of exploding a car
    2. The author became aware the situation was worse than expected when__________.
    A. they arrived at the checkpoint
    B. the officers put their helmets on
    C. an officer shouted at him
    D. some people were asked to kneel down
    3. Paragraphs 6 and 7 are mainly written to_________.
    A. analyze the reason for the accident
    B. describe the author's terrible feelings
    C. state the importance to obey police
    D. show how differently the officers treated them
    4. The author indicated that in Iraq ,__________.
    A. he would think twice before going to social activities
    B. it was particularly dangerous for foreigners
    C. foreigners were treating local people very cruelly
    D. American officers could do whatever they wanted

An Australian-based scientist announced yesterday he had made a step forward in forensic (用于法
庭的) DNA testing so that an individual can be identified by a single cell.
Ian Findlay, from the Australian Genome Research Facility at the University of Queensland, said
current DNA testing required 200 to 500 cells to gain a similar level of accuracy. "What we have done
has brought that down to one cell," Dr Findlay said after releasing details of his DNA testing technique
    at a Sydney conference.
The technology could allow investigators to pick up DNA identities from plastic cards and even build
up a complete history of the people who have handled a paper document.
"You'd have to wear a space suit to stop yourself from leaving traces. You can identify cells on the
paper, so you can work out where it's come from and who's touched it," he said.
The technique could also be used to trace the thrower of a punch (打孔) from cells left behind on the
skin of their victim. Even the wearing of latex(橡膠)gloves would not help: small cells can pass through
the gloves, and the constant flow of genetic material given off by the human body would leave further
    evidence.
"We gained a skin cell from a document dating back 30 years and managed to gain a DNA
fingerprint. DNA evidence can remain fresh for decades, perhaps even centuries," Dr Findlay said.  "The
potential for this technology to solve unsolved crimes is great, "he said.
But Dr Findlay, named scientist of the year in 1998 by the European Society of Human Genetics, said
the new testing needed to be scientifically validated, which would take up to five years.
He said, "There are serious consequences taking on technologies too early. The public has to be sure
that they have the utmost confidence in the security and court systems."
    1. The main advantage of the new technology is that ______.
    A. it has brought down the cost of DNA testing
    B. a single cell can identify an individual
    C. a higher level of accuracy can be acquired with a single cell
    D. it needs less than 200 cells to gain a certain level of accuracy
    2. The underlined word" validated" means ______.
    A. proved true
    B. imagined good
    C. supposed commonly
    D. criticized strongly
    3. According to Ian Findlay, the new technology can ______.
    A. help to keep DNA evidence fresh for decades and even centuries
    B. make the process of DNA testing much more simplified
    C. help to pick up DNA identities more easily
    D. be widely used in five years at most
    4. The last paragraph suggests that ______.
    A. the immediate adopting of the technology may cause mistakes
    B. the public have acknowledged the new testing technology
    C. it is safe to put the new technology into use now
    D. Dr Findlay is quite sure of his new technology
    5. The aim of the passage is to ______.
    A. praise Ian Findlay for his work
    B. inform us of the wide use of DNA testing
    C. report a piece of interesting news
    D. tell us a recent improvement in DNA testing

Making an apology is not the same as making amends.Sometimes we apologize just because it's the
easiest thing to do.What's actually important is to identify where we go wrong, take full responsibility for
our mistakes and, if possible, try to make up for them.
A recent case involving HewlettPacked, the US computer giant, shows the importance of presenting a
sincere apology. The Chinese consumers who had bought notebook computers of certain models, which
have been put on Chinese market since 2007, suffered a massive flash screen failures and overheating
problems.Through investigation, Chinese AQSIQ (國家質(zhì)檢總局) identified these HP computers had
quality problems and HP admitted this.HP made a proposal that they would extend the warranty period of such computers, but this could not satisfied the consumers. What they needed was a thorough description
of the truth.HP has "sincerely" apologized. But the consumers remain angry, and say that only a product
recall-as HP has done in the past-will prove that the apology is sincere.
Another apology that fell flat on its face was that of Thierry Henry, the famous French footballer. His
deliberate handball in November 2009 created the goal which knocked Ireland out of the 2010 World
Cup.The incident caused great anger in the football world, and eventually Henry issued an apology. Two
days later, he wrote, "I'm not the referee...but if I hurt someone I'm sorry." Better late than never, perhaps, but even then he passed the blame onto the referee!
Such highprofile cases, which attract a lot of publicity are often under the spotlight, but similar incidents occur in our everyday lives.Stress caused by schoolwork and tiredness can sometimes result in outbursts
of anger against friends and family.Have you ever lost your temper for minor reasons? After calming down, most people are quick to realize their mistake and apologize. But it's just as important to identify what
caused the error in the first place and take action to ensure it doesn't happen again.
No one should hold a negative attitude to making a sincere apology.Empty words are easy to say, but
they are as useless as they sound.A real show of remorse demands hard work and commitment to put
    error right.
    1. What does the author intend to tell us in the case of HP?
    A. A true apology needs sincere actions.
    B. HP should recall all the faulty computers.
    C. Good quality makes a good company.
    D. A company should apologize and pay for their mistakes.
    2. According to the author, when we do anything wrong we firstly ________.
    A. make an apology face to face honestly
    B. admit we were wrong and try to make the wrong right
    C. take the responsibility for apologizing to others
    D. choose the easiest thing to do
    3. We can infer from the case of Thierry Henry that ________.
    A. it's never too late to say "I'm sorry."
    B. writing an apology is not a good idea
    C. Henry didn't identify his fault
    D. the football fans were mad with Henry
    4. Which of the following can best explain the word "commitment" in the last paragraph?
    A. Decision.
    B. Promise.
    C. Agreement.
    D. Responsibility.
    5. What's the best title of this passage?
    A. What Really Puts Things Right
    B. Don't Apologize Easily
    C. Making an Apology-No One Is out of Exception
    D. How to Judge an Apology-Sincere Enough?

An "apple polisher" is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a
    bribe(賄賂),but is close to it.
All sorts of people are apple polishers, including politicians and people in high offices ? just about
everybody. Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George
Fox and his party, but failed.
There are other phrases meaning the same thing as "apple-polishing" ?? "soft-soaping" or "butter-up".
A gift is just one way to "soft-soap" somebody, or to "butter him up". Another that is just as effective is
flattery, giving someone high praise ?? telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how
    talented and wise he is.
Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love or hear it ? Only an unusual man can resist the
thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who gets so
    little of it.
We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But we just
lap it up for its food value and nourishment, as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to
    ourselves.
Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good
example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got
tired of listening to the endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣).They overpraised him to the
skies, as a man of limitless power.
He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered
the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might
show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery.
1.Which of the following activities has nothing to do with "apple-polishing" ?
    A. A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks
    B. An employee tells his boss how good he is at management
    C. A knight(騎士)is said to be of limitless power by his followers
    D. A teacher praised his students for their talent and wisdom.
2.Which of the following statement about flattery is TRUE according to the author ?
    A. Too much flattery can carry us away
    B. Flattery is too empty to do people any good
    C. Flattery can get nothing but excessive(過度的)pride
    D. Flattery is one of the ways to apple-polish people.
    3. King Canute of Denmark and England took his followers to the seashore because __________.
    A. he was sick of his normal
    B. he disliked being overpraised any more
    C. he wanted them to realize how wise he was
    D. he wanted them to see how weak he was as a king
    4. The author thinks that flattery can do good to those who _________.
    A. are really excellent
    B. lack confidence
    C. are politicians or in high offices
    D. think highly of themselves
