【題目】Traditions of giving middle names vary around the world.

Scotland

Middle names are actually a fairly recent discovery in Scotland. However, as the practice has become popular around the world, it has become pretty common for Scottish babies to have middle names. Because last names in Scotland are generally associated with their family roots, and first names usually describe a physical characteristic, many parents see a middle name as an opportunity to give their baby a slightly more creative name.

Spain and Latin America

In Spain and Latin America, a middle name is a way to break free from the cultural code governing first names. In some countries, even first names are legislated(立法) to be of Christian origin. In Chile, most girls are named Maria, after the Virgin Mary, so the middle name is used in practice for differentiation. Maria is the most common name in the Spanish-speaking world, so in all Spanish-speaking countries the middle name takes on great significance.

Russia

In Russia, both boys and girls are given middle names based on their father's first name. For boys, the middle name usually has ovich, or evich, added to its ending. For girls, the middle patronymic(從父名衍生出的名字) name usually has ovna, or evna, added to its ending. People in Russia are often referred to by both their first and middle names, sort of the way parents in America use their children's full names when they're trying to get their attention(or yell at them). Close friends in Russia often don't use their first names completely, and use only patronymic names, when talking to each other.

Australia

According to Law Buddy, an Australian legal advice service, child naming laws in Australia allow Birth Registrars to refuse to register baby names that to be offensive to register to careless, inappropriate, ridiculous. They do allow for children to get a middle name, which is typically reserved for the mother's maiden name(娘家姓),provided, of course, that the mother's maiden name is not offensive, careless, inappropriate, or ridiculous.

2What role do middle names in the Spanish-speaking countries play?

B.They're usually very creative names.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個完整的故事。

One fallmy wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.

Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bearI like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.

As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.

The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.

Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bearhit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).

I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way,but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇)I took some pictures of the bear.

Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyesbut doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fencesprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫),the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

Honeybee populations in the United States 1 (decrease) dramatically over the decades. And a new study suggests that a certain kind of pesticide could be making things 2 (bad).

The number of honeybees hasn’t changed much over the past few years, but the overall picture doesn’t look good for an insect that plays 3 important role in our food supply. Scientists don’t know for sure 4 this is happening. Pesticides and parasites (寄生蟲) are the most suspected reasons, and a study recently published in the scientific journal. One suggests that neonicotinolds (煙堿類農(nóng)藥) ,types of pesticides that 5 (use) around the world, are incredibly poisonous to honeybees and other insects. Part of the reason for that is because these pesticides appear 6 (stick) around in the environment and stay dangerous for longer periods of time.

Though they’re deadly to insects, neonicotinolds are not considered dangerous to humans. An ongoing challenge 7 farmers is finding ways to keep other insects away while still 8 (protect ) bees. Pesticides may not discriminate between the insects they kill, though neonicotinolds maker says the chemical’s risk to bees is lower when it’s used properly. The U. S. Department of Agriculture says it’s 9 (likely) that there’s one magic 10 (solve) to the problem, but there are a number of organizations trying to help honeybees.
