We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? "When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy (嫉妒) my luck?" "And Paul-why didn't he pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends - or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You're a lucky dog." that's being friendly. But "lucky dog"? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn't think you deserve your luck.

"Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for" is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up (包藏) in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿態(tài))? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.

This passage is mainly about ____.

how to interpret what people say

B. what to do when you listen to others talking

C. how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people

  D. why we go wrong with people sometimes

According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that ____

A. we fail to listen carefully when they talk   B. we tend to doubt what our friends say

  C. people usually state one thing but means another

D. people tend to be annoyed when we check what they say

In the sentence "Maybe he doesn't see it himself." In the second paragraph, the pronoun “it” refers to _____

  A. being friendly    B. a bit of envy       C. lucky dog        D. your luck

When we listen to a person talking, the most important thing for us to do is____.

A. notice the way the person is talking     B. take a good look at the person talking

  C. mind his lone, his posture and the look in his eyes

  D. examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture

“If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives — the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do — as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted (傳送)  electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read — sports and international news, etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

1. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Best Way to Get News      B. The Changes of Media

C. Make Your Own Newspaper     D. The Future of Newspaper

2. What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?

A. Sports and international news.   B. A menu of important news.

C. The most important news.           D. What you are interested in.

3. From the passage, we can infer _______.

A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media

B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media

C. television will take the place of newspaper

D. the writer believes some media will die out

4. The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means _______.

A. depend on      B. compete with     C. fight with     D. kill off

There’s nothing wrong with turning your hobbies into business. We’re supposed to enjoy our work, right? Just turn something we already enjoy into our careers. Whether you’re turning into painting or building, you know you feel proud of the result of your efforts.

However, you should first explore the concept and do your market research and other planning. Don’t forget to consider what your day-to-day work life would look like.

There is one very positive aspect of doing a business plan based on your hobby. You may be highly motivated to do some planning and research, since this relates to an activity you know well and enjoy, and then you may be more likely to do the necessary planning. This is a big plus! And once you see how to do this research, you may be more likely to do it for other ideas you will come up with.

Something I’ve learned over the years is that creating business out of the first few ideas you come up with isn’t a good goal. If you are brainstorming ideas for your new career path, I suggest you list lots of ideas and choose one or two that have the most potential to explore, as well as those that really draw you in.

The evolution of your ideas is the best reason to explore those first ideas. The best careers come from exploring the first ideas and finding out what will and what won’t work for you.

Make sure the business plan you are creating based on your hobbies should be the one that you will enjoy and that will add to your quality of life. Then start with your hobbies, and enjoy the adventure of finding out where you will end up!
