Dear Editor of the school newspaper,

I contribute to your newspaper to introduce something about the recent class meeting of mine.

【答案】

Dear Editor of the school newspaper,

I contribute to your newspaper to introduce something about the recent class meeting of mine. Our class has held a heated debate about whether going abroad or staying at home for college education recently.

Some students think that studying abroad is a good choice, because there are lots of famous colleges abroad. The environment there is nice and quiet. But the expense of studying abroad is rather high. Others prefer to study home. They believe that domestic colleges have excellent teams of teachers, the teaching equipment is advanced, and the tuition is lower. However, chances to practice are not as many as studying abroad.

As far as I am concerned, I choose domestic colleges. Although the domestic university may not be as good as the foreign university, culture difference is a big problem. To study abroad, you must get over the obstacle of language and differences in behavior and habits.

【題目】Scientists have discovered a special biological behavior in dolphins(海豚) that could lead to a treatment for late-onset diabetes(晚發(fā)的糖尿。 in humans. Studies on dolphins found that healthy dolphins switch into a diabetic-like state overnight when they are not feeding, but return to normal when they eat the following morning.

The extraordinary finding has led scientists to suggest that dolphins have genetic switch that allows them to imitate diabetes while they are not feeding for a night, without suffering any ill effect.

If researchers can identify a similar genetic pathway in human, they may be able to develop drugs to effectively switch off diabetes. Some 2.2 million people in Britain have type 2 (or late-onset) diabetes, a figure that is expected to reach 4 million by 2025 as a consequence of rising levels of obesity(肥胖).

The tissues of people with type 2 diabetes have become resistant to insulin(胰島素)so they lose the ability to control sugar levels in their blood. The condition can damage the heart, eyes, kidneys(腎臟) and nerves and contribute to 5% of all deaths, according to the World Healthy Organisation.

Dolphins appear to imitate diabetes to keep high levels of blood sugar when food is rare. Like humans, dolphins need some sugar in their blood for their brains to function normally. Venn-Watson’s team analysed 1,000 blood samples(樣本) from 52 dolphins while they didnt eat anything overnight and fed in the morning. At night time, the dolphins’ metabolism(新陳代謝)changed greatly and showed similar characteristics to that seen in people with type 2 diabetes.

“It is our hope that this discovery can lead to new ways to prevent, treat and maybe even cure diabetes in humans,” said Stephanie Venn-Watson, director of clinical research at the National Marine Foundation in San Diego.

B. More British people will suffer type 2 diabetes due to obesity.

C. 2.2 million people with type 2 diabetes die in Britain every year.

【題目】Expensive and new gloves allow chatterboxes(話匣子)to take the term “handsfree” to a new levelby talking into them as they make a call. The gloves are known as “Talk to the Hand” and cost 1,000 a pair. They fixed a speaker unit into the thumb and a microphone into the little finger that can be connected to any mobile handset using Bluetooth.

Artist Sean Miles designed the new gloves that double as a phone in part of his project that shows the possibilities of gadget(小裝置,小機械) recycling. He uses outdated gloves and combines them with parts from mobile handsets recycled through O2, which commissioned(承擔)the project. Mobile phone users will be able to keep their hands warm while they chat without taking their phones out of their pockets or handbags.

Mr Miles designed two pairs of the new gloves—one in pink and the other in brown and yellow. They will appear in an exhibition this July and visitors will be able to win the gloves. If demand is high, they will then be produced on a larger scale. O2 Recycle, which backed the project, estimates that there are already 70 million unused mobile handsets in the UK. The service pays up to 260 to those who recycle gadgets including phones, handheld consoles, MP3 players and digital cameras.

Designer Sean Miles hopes his work will get people thinking about recycling. The 41-year-old said, “I hope that my ‘Talk to the Hand’ project will get people to think again about the waste created by not recycling gadgets. If a few more people recycle their gadgets rather than send them to trash, I think this project will have fulfilled its aim.”

Bill Eyres, head of O2 Recycle, urges people to recycle their phone responsibly. He said, “There’s a pressing need for all of us to look at outdated handsets, and all the gadgets that we move on from or upgrade each year. Whether they are consoles or cameras, we should think of them as a resource that we need to recycle responsibly rather than throw them away.”

【2】Consumers can buy the “Talk to the Hand” gloves ______.

【3】 The purpose of the project is to _______.

A. promote the technology of IT
