It’s been a long time before I left my hometown. I remember it was the beautiful place with an excellent environment, and people there were very kind-hearted. Last weekend, I make a call to a friend living there, but he sent me some pictures of the city by e-mail.
From the photo, I can see that great changes have been taken place there. For example, the streets have become wide, and the buildings higher. Beside, the people are dressed modern clothes. Several modern shopping malls are being built.
My hometown has changed very greatly that I can hardly believe my eyes. I hope my hometown can become better and better in the future.

此處為固定句型“It has been+時間段+ since sb. did sth.”,表示“自從某人做某事已經(jīng)多長時間了”。故before改為since。
故the改為a。
故make改為made。
故but改為and。
故去掉been。
be dressed in表示“穿著”。故 dressed后加in。
修飾后文副詞greatly應用so,so...that… 故very改為so。

At 27, after serving in World War II, I dreamed of owning a piece of land. So I moved from central Illinois to Shelbina, Missouri, and bought 236 acres for $6,000. The plot of land was situated on a dirt road and was half farmland and half trees, with an old house that had no running water or electricity. Obviously, it was not what you’d call prime real estate. But it was mine.
I was alone for the first time in my life, and I found it liberating. My days were filled from dawn until dusk with plowing and planting corn. Dinnertime came and went, and I barely remembered to eat.
I wouldn’t say I was a great success at farming in Missouri. However, when I went to the store to buy some plowshares, I met a nice woman named Claudette working behind the counter. I also ran into her at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shelbina each week. I found out later that her manager kept asking her about “that tall boy (and eligible bachelor) from Illinois living out in the country in an old house with no water, no electricity and no housekeeper.”
Claudette and her sister soon visited my farm and put up some curtains. To show my appreciation, I took Claudette out for a ride in my 2-ton Studebaker truck. We married in 1954 and have now been together for more than 62 years!
I later sold the Missouri farm for a $3,500 profit and bought 40 acres in Illinois. For many reasons, buying the Missouri farm was a good idea. I will always cherish memories of owning the farm and meeting my beloved.
【1】When the author bought the plot of land in Shelbina, ________.
A. it was well equipped B. he was unsatisfied with it
C. it was not a real estate D. he worked very hard on it
【2】The underlined word “l(fā)iberating” in paragraph 2 can be replaced by the word ________.
A. upset B. interesting
C. free D. boring
【3】The author regards buying the Missouri farm as a good idea because _______.
A. he was able to sell it at the price of $3,500
B. he could recall plenty of experiences in his own farm
C. he got the chance to meet his wife working at a church in Shelbina then
D. he could purchase another house in Illinois as a result of successful farming

Telling someone they are not hired is never an easy job, but all hiring managers will face this difficult situation many times in their careers. While everyone fears denial on some level, it is important to understand that not everyone will fit in every job. Further, there are times when the applicant quality will be so great, a decision to reject an applicant may not reflect on that applicant's abilities but the overall quality of the field.
There are a number of methods that can be used to get the message across that a person is not hired. In many cases, especially for those who were never called for an interview, a simple form letter may be sufficient. In other cases, where someone may have been called for an interview, a phone call or letter could be chosen to deliver the message that they were not hired. In cases where there may be an ongoing relationship with the person not hired, it may be best to break the news in person, though this has the obvious potential of being more uncomfortable. Above all, it is best to always be honest with those who didn't get the job. Lying is never acceptable.
Generally, it is not a good idea to tell someone specific reasons why they are not hired for a job. This can only lead to resentment(怨恨)and regret. However, there may be specific times when this could be a good idea. For example, if an applicant is promising and the hiring manager believes another position will be opening up that suits the applicant's skills, this could be a way to let that person know they may soon have another opportunity.
In all cases, even if you feel someone has cheated to obtain an interview, never behave in a way which shows you are superior to them. This is unprofessional and reflects very poorly not only on the hiring manager, but the organization as a whole.
【1】Why are some applicants refused according to Paragraph 1?
A.They are interested in other fields.
B.They don't qualify for the position.
C.They are afraid of making decisions.
D.They lack the courage to face failures.
【2】How may a not-interviewed applicant be informed of the rejection?
A.By receiving a formal phone call.
B.By getting a simple form letter.
C.By checking a message online.
D.By attending a personal meeting.
【3】In what case will applicants be told exactly why they are not hired?
A.They regret applying for the job.
B.They demand specific explanations.
C.They may be capable of another post.
D.They have submitted false information.
【4】What can be inferred about the position of hiring managers?
A.It calls for professional skills.
B.It attracts the applicants most.
C.It doesn't allow for any mistake.
D.It requires honesty and ambition.
