Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to “think and concentrate.” Spilich put young non-smokers, active smokers and smokers deprived (被剝奪) of cigarettes through a series of tests.

In the first test, each subject (試驗對象) sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96. In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and nonsmokers performed equally well.

The next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one. Non-smokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine (尼古丁), active smokers were faster than deprived smokers.

In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers.

The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it. Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details.

“As our tests became more complex.” Sums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins” He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at many jobs until they got complicated. A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity.”

1.The purpose of George Spilich’s experiments is _______.

A. to test whether smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokers

B. to show how smoking damages people’s mental capacity

C. to prove that smoking affects people’s regular performance

D. to find out whether smoking helps people’s short-term memory

2.Which of the following statements is true?

A. Active smokers in general performed better than deprived smokers.

B. Active smokers responded more quickly than the other subjects.

C. Non-smokers were not better than other subjects in performing simple tasks.

D. Deprived smokers gave the slowest responses to the various tasks.

3.We can infer from the last paragraph that _______.

A. smokers should not expect to become airline pilots

B. smoking in emergency cases causes mental illness

C. no airline pilots smoke during flights

D. smokers may prove unequal to handing emergency cases

1.A

2.C

3.D

Most people who travel from China to the US find that, despite having studied English for years, they have to “re-learn” it upon arriving.

Words that we learned in English classes are not pronounced the same way here. To truly be part of the “melting pot”, fluency in English is not enough. You need an accent to stand out.

When I first came to the US for graduate school, I was a nervous foreigner. I felt so out of place that I wanted to hide everything about me that was “different”. To talk like an American became one of my goals.

During my first term as a teaching assistant (TA), my students complained they could not understand me. I learned later from a study that this complaint was common among US students with an international TA.It is called the “Oh, no!” syndrome (情緒、舉動): “Oh,no! Not another international TA, and not that accent again!’’

So I imitated(模仿)the way native speakers talk and, over time, I made such good progress that American friends started to praise my English as having “almost no accent’’. I took this as a sign of my success. Ever since, people have often mistaken me for someone from many places: the Midwest, the West Coast, China, Japan, South Korea. Most frequently, people think I am from California.

Suddenly, conformity ( 一致) was no longer a praise: If I talk like an American , am I still Chinese? If I lose my Chinese accent, do I also lose my cultural identity? Am I denying my past by being absorbed into a new culture?

Now I realize that a person’s accent is a permanent record of their past cultural experience and it is amark of one’s experience and exposure to different cultures.

As a fourth-year student in the US,I am no longer a nervous foreigner. My nervousness has been replaced by a desire to hold on to my cultural origins. Now I consciously add some Chinese“accent” when I speak.I do not wish to speak “perfect” English because I am proud of who I am.

1.Why does the author think people have to “re-learn” English upon arriving? ( No more than 10 words).

2.How did the author feel when others praised her English? (No more than 5 words)

3.Why did the author decide to speak with a bit of a Chinese “accent”? (No more than 10 words)

4.Please explain the underlined part in English in another way. (No more than 8 words)

5.What is the article mainly about? (No more than 8 words)

It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated.

People like the Secretary of Education simply don’t know what they’re talking about when they knock students. Nor do those who complain about falling academic standards.

The vast majority of the nation’s 12 million students are struggling to pay for their educations. They are part of the invisible workforce. Many hold down full-time jobs. They’re frying hamburgers, photographing weddings, working in construction, and waiting on tables. The fact that they even show up for classes is a wonderful event.

The financial situation of most students explains a lot about what is happening in schools. Why are the traditional courses so unpopular? Why are students flocking to accounting and computer science and any professional programs that seem to lead to careers?

Answer: Today’s working student has been forced into a kind of premature matter-of-fact way of viewing things. Romance is gone. The notion of transforming one’s self through study alone has disappeared. Today’s students seek freedom from manual labor, and the status conferred by a good job.

There are other consequences. Today’s students don’t have much time or energy to be devoted, and carry out independent research or even do serious homework. That’s the secret behind falling academic standards. Students have become consumers. They want grades and certifications. Their professors can’t be expected to give a grade of failure to students who are clearly tired from the effort to pay their bills.

There’s a lot wrong with this situation. It’s twisting the definition of education out of shape. Worse, it’s creating a generation that is totally unpleasant. The brightest students turn out to be yuppies (雅皮士). The vast majority are, at least, good-natured semi-literates.

The time has run out for philosophical debates about fixed courses of study. What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full-time student during one’s formative years is an honorable calling worthy of support. If families can’t or won’t give it to their children, then the government should.

1. The author’s purpose in writing this article is to __________.

A. awaken the whole society to the problems today’s college students face

B. warn Americans that academic standards are falling

C. advise college students to study hard

D. provide a suggestion that only full-time students be enrolled

2. The most suitable word to describe the author’s feelings about today’s college students

is _________.

A. criticize B. sympathize

C. complain D. urge

3.Which of the following CANNOT be learned from the passage?

A. Many students are often absent from classes.

B. Traditional courses are not popular.

C. Students commit crimes with computers.

D. Students don’t devote much time and energy to their homework.

4.By saying “Romance is gone” in paragraph 5, the author means ____________.

A. today’s students do not believe in love stories any more

B. today’s students become more practical in dealing with things

C. students think there is no affection any more and break up with their lovers

D. today’s students hold matter-of-fact opinions on love

5.Which of the following suggestions will the author not agree with?

A. We should encourage students to give up full-time jobs.

B. Families should offer their children more help financially.

C. We should stand up and say something for today’s college students.

D. We should make more strict regulations to force students to study hard.

Birthdays often involve surprises. But this year's surprise on the birthday of the great British playwright William Shakespeare is surely one of the most dramatic.

On April 22, one day before his 441st birthday anniversary, experts discovered that one of the most recognizable portraits of William Shakespeare is a fake. This means that we no longer have a good idea of what Shakespeare looked like. “It's very possible that many pictures of Shakespeare might be unreliable because many of them are copies of this one,” said an expert from Britain's National Portrait Gallery.

The discovery comes after four months of testing using X-rays, ultraviolet light, microphotography and paint samples. The experts from the gallery say the image —commonly known as the “Flower portrait”— was actually painted in the 1800s, about two centuries after Shakespeare's death. The art experts who work at the gallery say they also used modern chemistry technology to check the paint on the picture. These checks found traces of paint dating from about 1814. Shakespeare died in 1616, and the date that appears on the portrait is 1609.

“We now think the portrait dates back to around 1818 to 1840. This was when there was a renewed interest in Shakespeare's plays,” Tarnya Cooper, the gallery's curator (館長), told the Associated President.

The fake picture has often been used as a cover for collections of his plays. It is called the Flower portrait because one of its owners, Desmond Flower, gave it to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

“There have always been questions about the painting,” said David Howells, curator for the Royal Shakespeare Company. “Now we know the truth, we can put the image in its proper place in the history of Shakespearean portraiture.”

Two other images of Shakespeare, are also being studied as part of the investigation and the results will come out later this month.________.

3.How many methods were used to test the portrait?

A. Not mentioned. B. Two
