As I stood in the return line and watched people, I became extremely impatient. My daughter had got four Barbie dolls and two identical Cabbage Patch Kids on Christmas, so I was eager to return toys that she didn’t need. Suddenly a strong idea came to me. I eyed the lady in front of me with three small girls on her leg. The family looked poor. The children were without coats, and they had dirty faces and hair. “You are ready to get out of here, aren’t you? Give her the things you want to return,” the still voice spoke. “Give them to her? These are mine. I’m not giving her my stuff,” I argued. I swallowed the urge that threatened to escape my lips when the voice spoke again. “Give her the toys.” I was familiar with the voice. I know I couldn’t argue with that voice.

I sighed and tapped the lady on the shoulder. “Ma’am,” I cleared my throat. She looked at me with kind, tired eyes surrounded by wrinkles. “Yes?” she asked. “Would your little girls like to have these toys?” I pointed to my basket full of returns. “Would your children like to have them?” She was speechless, and I swore that tears were about to well up in her eyes. “You’d be doing me a favor. I can’t stand in this line in a moment longer.” “You have no idea,” she shook her head. “You have no idea what that means to me.”

I started loading her basket as the excited girls watched. “Merry Christmas,” I said, “God bless you.” She replied as I nodded and exited the line. I didn’t want to go the Walmart that day, but I went. I didn’t want to give the lady my kid’s toys, but I did. Sometimes doing what we don’t want to do is exactly what we’re supposed to do.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:湖北省2016-2017學(xué)年高二2月聯(lián)考英語(yǔ)試卷 題型:閱讀理解

No poem should ever be discussed or analyzed, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end. All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on films, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting(背誦) it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than analyzing it if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is a criticism of life, and a heightening(提升) of life. It is an approach to the truth of feeling, and it can save your life.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

1.To have a better understanding of a poem, one should________.

A. analyze it by oneself B. copy it down in a notebook

C. practise reading it aloud D. discuss it with others

2.According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students ________.

A. to enjoy poetry B. to become teachers

C. to become poets D. to understand life

3.The underlined words “make room” in the last paragraph probably means ________.

A. to provide equipment B. to leave a certain amount of time

C. to set aside enough space D. to build a booth

4.The best title for the passage may be “________”.

A. Analyzing Poems B. Discussing Poems

C. Learning English D. Reading Poems Aloud

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:遼寧省撫順市2017屆高三3月模擬考試英語(yǔ)試卷 題型:閱讀理解

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. As some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.

Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that don’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech – “ I have a dream”, you may notice that he stumble(結(jié)巴)over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on its message rather than on his way of speech-making.

People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.

As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.

1.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ________.

A. be smarter than you

B. know what you are talking about

C. do better than you

D. notice your mistakes

2.You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ________.

A. you find the way of speech-making more important

B. you don’t fully understand the speech

C. you don’t know what the speaker plans to say

D. your attention is on the content

3.From the last two paragraphs, the author means that ________.

A. giving a speech is like giving a performance

B. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made

C. one to two mistakes in a speech may not be bad

D. the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be

4.What would be the best title of the passage?

A. How to Be a Perfect Speaker

B. Don’t Expect a Perfect Speech

C. Don’t Expect Mistakes in a Speech

D. How to Make a Perfect Speech
