閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

One man tells of driving on a long and lonely road, the last 65 miles of it unpaved, in order to watch Indian dances in the state of Arizona. After the dances, he returned to his car only to find that it had a flat tire.He put on the spare and drove to the only service station in that town.

“Do you fix flats?” he inquired of the attendant.

  “Yes, ” came the answer.

“How much do you charge?” he asked.

With a twinkle in his eye, the man replied, “What difference does it make?”

This is what has been called a “Hobson's choice” .A Hobson's choice is a situation that forces a person to accept whatever is offered or go without.

According to Barbara Berliner, the phrase was inspired by sixteenth-century entrepreneur(企業(yè)家)Thomas Hobson. There was no choice by the customer-it was strictly Hobson's choice.

But often we really have a choice, and the choice does make a difference. We may not always believe it.We may feel as if we have no choice, but almost always there is a choice in the matter. And when we realize that we do most things by choice, then we are taking control of our own lives.

Someone challenged me to try an experiment that completely changed my perspective(看法,觀點(diǎn)).“For the next seven days, ” he said, “remove the words ‘I have to’ from your vocabulary and say ‘I choose to’.Don't say, ‘I have to work late tonight’.Instead, say, ‘I choose to work late’.When you choose to do it, you take control of your life.Instead of saying ‘I have to stay home’, try ‘I choose to stay home’.The way you spend your time is your choice. You are responsible. You have control.”

In just seven days I was no longer saying “I have to”and I felt better about my decisions.I learned that there is very little in my life I actually have to do.You and I decide to do certain things because we believe that it will be for the best. When we remove “I have to” from our vocabularies, we take control.

Try it for a week and you see what happens.I think you'll see it's a change for the better.

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraphThere is one extra heading which you do not need.

A.Causes of overusing fluoride
B.Negative effects of fluoride
C.Safe use of fluoride
D.The expert’s background information
E.No need to worry about fluoride poisoning
F.Solutions to improper use of fluoride
I have heard that fluoride can help stop dental decay, but I recently read that it is poisonousWhich of these is true? How can children use fluoride safely?
【小題1】

This question is answered by Dr Marcia M.Rich who practises general dentistry in Newholt. She is also a lecturer at the University and a writer for the monthly magazine Your Dentist Cares
【小題2】

My answer to the first question is to stress that fluoride works well and is safe when users follow instructions.Young children have a tendency to swallow toothpaste, which is why they should only have a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on their toothbrush. If this simple measure is taken, parents can be confident that children will be protected against tooth decay, and come to no harm.
【小題3】

Almost all medicines have an adverse effect-or even be deadly-if they are not taken as directed. So you are right-fluoride can be poisonous if it is swallowed in very large quantities. It is for the reason that fluoride supplements can only be obtained on prescription from the doctor or dentist. Please be assured that fluoride overdoses are rare-in fact, I have never heard of any fatal incidents related to fluoride poisoning.
【小題4】

Scientific studies have shown that fluoride can help to prevent cavities as long as it is used correctly. If fluoride is abused, there is a risk of illness or even deaths in extreme cases. If a deadly amount of fluoride is taken, immediate first-aid could save a life.A person who has swallowed a large amount of fluoride will probably start vomiting. If not, the patient should be given milk or antacid and taken to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment.
【小題5】

Taking too much fluoride while teeth are growing can lead to a condition called dental fluorosis. The most likely cause is the swallowing of fluoride toothpastes by young children. It can also be caused by inappropriate use of fluoride drop or other fluoride supplements, for example when fluoride is already is already present in drinking water.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。并將答案寫在答題卡指定的位置。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.

“Shoppers need to check the labels (標(biāo)簽) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be non-existent,” said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. “Food production is highly competitive.  1. It will increase profits, and consumers won’t always realize they are being tricked.”

Flavorings(調(diào)味品,調(diào)料) are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-flavored products sold in stores.  2. Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.

3. Let’s take jam as an example. Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.

4.  Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. “Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading.  5.Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread,” Tokelove said. “It’s time to take measures to protect the consumers’ rights.”

A.They found that about 60 percent of them didn’t contain any fruit at all.

B.It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.

C.The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.

D.The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.

E. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.

F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.

G. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.
