As I write this I’m sitting on a bus back to Santiago in Chile where I am currently working as a language assistant. I’ve just spent the weekend in a city 1 (call) La Serena north of Santiago. I was lucky enough to see the flowering desert, a natural phenomenon that 2 (occur) around every five years here in the Atacama Desert.

3 (follow) a particularly large amount of rainfall earlier, a(n) 4(vary) of flowers come into blossom. Bright purple flowers create 5 unbelievably beautiful scene at the base of the surrounding mountains.

6 (catch) a glimpse of this magnificent treasure of nature, we took a bus from La Serena to a nearby town and then rented a car to go to the desert. 7 we saw did not disappoint us, and as expected it was even more fascinating than the pictures we had seen online. The bloom was particularly 8 (impress) this year due to the strong presence of El Nio (a band of warm water in the Pacific Ocean that changes the temperatures and increases the rainfall in certain areas). The vast carpet of colour 9 spread into the distance towards the contrasting green hills was 10 (simple) breathtaking and deserved a large amount of photos! A real reminder of the beauty our planet can provide.

9that/which

10simply

a natural phenomenon that occurs…

6To catch

To catch.

7What

8impressive

9that/which

The vast carpet of colour _____9_____ spread into the distance towards the contrasting green hills。 The vast carpet of colour 在從句中作主語,故可以用that /which。

10simply

I wandered into the small store where I usually buy milk, when the store owner received a call from a customer. The customer and his wife had shopped there several months earlier. He noticed that his wife really liked one thing in the store, so he wanted to buy it as a surprise.
But the customer was in Tennessee, far away from the store which was in Maine. What was more, he had been to the store several months earlier, and it was difficult to believe that the store owner would remember him, or what he was looking for.
The store owner took a few close-up photos with her camera, and e-mailed them to the customer on the computer. The customer looked at the photos, and decided which one he wanted. They talked and discussed a price over the phone. She took care of the credit card transaction (交易) online, and promised the gift would be shipped out that afternoon.
The store owner was really smart. She was willing to push herself to find new ways to make the transaction actually happen. And it did work. However, it was the first time she had ever done it.
I was amazed that the store owner discovered a creative solution that could lead to a new way of doing business. I was impressed by what she did—so easily, but how difficult it is for many of us to make that leap(飛躍). I'm not just talking about technology, but about learning how to adapt to change. Most people hate or fear change unless they get to know exactly what change needs to be made. However, we should realize that challenge and opportunity go hand in hand.
(1)According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.The owner often did business by using her camera.
B.The customer had ever been to the store before.
C.The owner and the customer discussed the price on the computer.

(2)The author was impressed by the store owner because _________.
A.she was always ready to help others
B.she told the writer how to run a store
C.she was a successful businesswoman
D.she managed to find a new way when facing change
(3)What's the correct order of the store owner's solution?
a. e-mailing the photos to the customer on the computer
b. taking care of the credit card transaction online
c. taking a few close-up photos with her camera
d. talking about the price of the gift with the customer
A.bcda
B.abcd
C.cadb
D.cabd
(4)Which of the following words can best describe the store owner?
A.Creative
B.Humorous
C.Confident
D.Honest

My mother is a hard-working and kind woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher, she works hard. Both my brother and I love her dearly as she loves us.
My mother has been teaching math at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times.
Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints.
Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is! This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. My mother is great indeed, and I always feel proud of her.
A. She enjoys listening to classic music.
B. As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort.
C. She loves her students and cares for them.
D. She never goes to expensive restaurants to enjoy meals.
E. My mother is hard-working and never wastes money.
F. I never forget it and always bear it in my mind.
G. Can you tell us something about your mother?

Seventy years ago, a group of well-known people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theater in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness, Richard Burton, Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras It became a fixed event every August and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge to the official festival. Eight theater groups turned up uninvited in 1947, in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.
Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theater by little-known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh.
Today the “Fringe”, once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theater, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959, with only 19 theater groups performing, some said it was getting too big.
A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971, and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

When I spent the summer with my grandmother, she always set me down to the general store with a list. Behind the counter was a lady like no one I'd ever seen.
“Excuse me,” I said. She looked up and said, “I'm Miss Bee.”
“I need to get these.” I said, holding up my list. “So? Go get them. ” Miss Bee pointed to a sign. “There's no one here except you and me and I'm not your servant, so get yourself a basket from that pile.”
I visited Miss Bee twice a week that summer. Sometimes she shortchanged me. Other times she overcharged. Going to the store was like going into battle. All summer long she found ways to trick me. No sooner had I learned how to pronounce “bicarbonate of soda” and memorized its location on the shelves than she made me hunt for it all over again. But by summer's end the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to return home, I stopped in to get some run.
“All right, little girl,” she said. “What did you learn this summer?” “That you're a meanie!” I replied. Miss Bee just laughed and said, “I know what you think of me. Well, I don't care! My job is to teach every child I meet life lessons. When you get older you'll be glad!” Glad I met Miss Bee? Ha! The idea was absurd.
Until one day my daughter came to me with homework troubles. “It's too hard,” she said. “Could you finish my math problems for me?”
“If I do it for you, how will you ever learn to do it yourself?” I said. Suddenly, I was back at that general store where I had learned the hard way to add up my bill by myself. Had I ever been overcharged since?
(1)How did the author first shop in the store?
A.She shopped with her grandmother together.
B.Miss Bee gave her a hand.
C.She asked a servant to help her.
D.She served herself.
(2)What can we infer about Miss Bee?
A.Her tricks made the author finish shopping in a shorter time.
B.She neither shortchanged the author nor overcharged her.
C.Teaching kids lessons was Miss Bee's job at that time.
D.Miss Bee used to learn to pronounce the names of some goods in the store.
(3)The author mentioned her daughter to __________.
A.show her satisfaction with her kid's homework.
B.tell readers Miss Bee's effect on her.
C.inform readers of her irresponsibility for her kid.
D.express her opposition to Miss Bee.
