8.Perfume(香水)-A Promise in a Bottle
"Perfume,"says expert perfumer Sophia Grojsman,"is a promise in a bottle."That promise might be reflected in a perfume's name:Joy,Pleasures,or Beautiful,for example.Millions of dollars are spent on the marketing of a perfume,trying to get customers to connect attraction or attitude to a fragrance.
Even without the marketing,fragrance has power over our thoughts and feelings.Some scientists insist that memory and smell are especially closely linked.Certain aromas(氣味)have the power to call up deep memories.Perfume makers are aware of this and use aromas that can touch us deeply.
The Power of Aromas
Of every ten new perfumes put on the market,perhaps only one will succeed.It's risky to try,as a company introducing a new fragrance can easily run through a budget of 20million dollars.Profits(利潤(rùn)),however,can be very high.One successful fragrance,CK One from designer Calvin Klein,made 250million dollars in its first year.
In the perfume world,the most basic and important quality is the material with its own special aroma.Some are natural,coming from flowers,plants,or wood,for example.Others are synthetic materials,that is,the materials which are not natural but made with the help of science.According to expert perfumer Harry Fremont,a good fragrance"is a balance between naturals and synthetics".
Image(形象)and Marketing
Sephora is France's leading perfume store.In a store of shining stone,metal,and glass,famous perfumes are shown and guarded like works of art in the nearby Louvre Museum.Salespeople are dressed in black,and each type of perfume is sold in a particularly shaped bottle.In perfume sales,the importance is on presentation at least as much as on the product.
If you're confused about which perfume to buy,perfumer Annie Buzantian offers her advice:you really can't get an idea whether a perfume works or not until you wear it."It's like the difference between a dress on the hanger on the hanger and a dress on your body,"says Buzantian."Your first impression is often the right one."

18.Rarely have I experienced a reaction like that which came about following the idea of banning private education. One of those who contacted me to disagree with the idea was 17 year old Anirudh Mandagere. He got 10 A*s at GCSE and is currently studying English,F(xiàn)rench,Math and History at a private school in Manchester. Here is his response:
For me,the idea that all private schools should be banned is not only ridiculous and unrealistic, but goes against the idea of liberty. We must have the freedom to choose between state-funded and privately educated schools. If parents pay taxes, surely they should be able to choose whether they send their children to a state-funded or a privately-funded school.
The economic impacts of abolishing private education are vast.Banning private schools would obviously contribute to a great transfer to state schools. Many state schools are already overburdened; do they really need more pupils?Abolishing private education would lead to higher taxes for taxpayers since more money would be needed to educate the 7% who were previously private educated. In the times of economic crisis, should the taxpayer need to fork out more money to pay for their education? There would also be a great rise in unemployment of the staff who works at private schools.
It is noted that,in general, private schools have better grades at GCSE and A level than state schools.Yet,why do people view this as a bad thing? The higher private school grades eventually force the government to endlessly improve state education so that the middle-classes do not totally abandon state education for private education. This competition creates reform and progress within state schools and eventually promote them!If the private schools did not exist, where would be the impetus for state school improvement?
Government should not simply ban a system which produces results. It should learn from it and use the private education model as a basis for the state education model.Abolishing a successful system will not help anybody, learning from a successful system will.

16.Personal money-management website Mint.com suggests recently that responsible parents should give their kids credit cards-possibly starting as young as middle school.The website says a credit card will help children master responsible spending habits and give parents the chance to teach them some valuable lessons.
It's absolutely true that kids should learn about how a credit card works and how to use it responsibly.But the idea that they need a card of their own to practise this is questionable.
Yes,credit cards are a teaching tool,but it's the time you spend educating them about money management that does the teaching,not the piece of plastic.Sit down with your child-here we are referring to teens and walk them through your credit card statements.Point out important things like the due date,late fee warning,and APR (年貸款利率).
If you have good credit,adding a child as an authorized user onto one of your credit cards also provides teachable moments.Allow kids to use the card to make specific purchases and require their participation in payment.
Since the card is still in your name, you can take them off it at any point and cut off their access if they're not able to handle the responsibility.
Another option is to set them up with an account at a local bank that offers free use of a debit card (借記卡).Unlike credit card,the debit card has no overdraft (透支) function.
Children can only use the card to pay for things and the money is taken directly from their bank account.If the account is empty,the worst that will happen is the card being declined at a cash register.
59.Why does Mint.com advise parents to give middle school kids credit cards?B
A.To strengthen the relationship with their kids.
B.To leave their kids financially independent.
C.To help their kids form good spending habits.
D.To teach their kids'how to save pocket money.
60.The author considers a credit card as a teaching tool becauseD.
A.it offers parents the chance to teach kids to manage money
B.it motivates teens to ask their parents for less financial support
C.it helps teenagers to know some basic knowledge of credit cards
D.it contains detailed financial information on the card surface
61.What is the purpose of adding kids as credit card authorized users?C
A.To help them pay close attention to their bank account.
B.To avoid extremely high overdraft fees.
C.To encourage them to share household expenses.
D.To teach them to be responsible credit card users.
62.What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A
A.The kids'attitude towards a credit card.
B.Further information about the debit card.

18.Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life.Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk.In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However,I believe that five is the best age to learn.By five or six,a child knows fear of water,a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid,to recognize true danger.Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.
To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn,as soon as possible, these four basic strokes:butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and crawl.I feel that one of these---the breaststroke is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.
In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:
1.Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you,you may get into trouble.
2.Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach.Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good.Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.
3.Don't smoke.Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it.
4.Work at any activity that builds muscles.
