In today’s difficult economic time, it’s natural to rethink your goal of studying abroad. Does the benefit outweigh the cost? The answer, in fact, is yes, when you look at the road ahead.

When the economy becomes more challenged, competition for the workforce increases, and employers look for employees with the best credentials(資力). Having an overseas degree — from a university where strong English skills are required — can make all the difference. The added expertise of a foreign degree, along with more cultural experience, can make you more qualified for many jobs.

A 50-year study of 3,400 students shows that studying abroad is usually a defining moment in a young person’s life and continues to impact the participant’s life for years after the experience.

82% said that they acquired skills that influenced their career path. 70% stated that it ignited(點(diǎn)燃)an interest in a career direction that they pursued after the experience.

And the effect on one’s career can be equally strong. A study by the Queensland, Australia government showed:

61% of employers stated overseas studying experience was positive on a graduate resume. 72% of employers felt that a second language made a graduate a more attractive employee.

Still, there’s the question of how to pay for studying overseas. But the cost doesn’t have to be as high as you think. Scholarships may be available to cover some or all of these costs. And, there are plenty of ways to further offset(抵消)the cost — through financial tips, advice and grants(補(bǔ)助金).

根據(jù)第七段,第二項(xiàng)調(diào)查表明“61% of employers stated overseas studying experience was positive on a graduate resume. 72% of employers felt that a second language made a graduate a more attractive employee”可知,有著海外留學(xué)經(jīng)歷和懂第二外語(yǔ)的求職者更具吸引力,說(shuō)明留學(xué)可以使求職者更容易找到工作。故選A項(xiàng)。

作者在第一、二段表明自己的觀點(diǎn),從第四段中“82% said that they acquired skills that influenced their career path. 70% stated that it ignited(點(diǎn)燃)an interest in a career direction that they pursued after the experience.”和第六段中“61% of employers stated overseas studying experience was positive on a graduate resume. 72% of employers felt that a second language made a graduate a more attractive employee.”

根據(jù)文章最后一段中“Scholarships may be available to cover some or all of these costs”可知,獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金可以解決一些你的學(xué)費(fèi)問(wèn)題。

通讀全文可知,根據(jù)第一段“In today’s difficult economic time, it’s natural to rethink your goal of studying abroad. Does the benefit outweigh the cost? The answer, in fact, is yes, when you look at the road ahead”可知,在當(dāng)今經(jīng)濟(jì)困難時(shí)期,重新考慮出國(guó)留學(xué)的目標(biāo)是很自然的。

Dear Mandy,

I’m not doing well in my lessons at school especial in maths. My dad says must try hard because he wants me go to university. He thinks I’m lazy, but it’s not true. I work really hard, often study late into the night! I’ve tried to talk to my mother, but she always said I have to work as hard like my brother does. My brother doesn’t study very hard, and he always gets excellent grades. It’s not fair!

The only thing I like it is art. My teacher says I’m the best student she’s had for year. When I told my dad, all he said was, “You mustn’t waste your time in art. You must focus your mind on your lessons!”

I’m feeling quite puzzling as to what to do now. Would you please help me out?

Thanks lot!

Yours sincerely,

Lisa

For a long time bats 1(be) one of the most feared creatures in the animal kingdom. Many pop culture associations with them are2(relate) to vampire. Though these associations are complete misunderstandings, bats do have a dark side as a 3(danger) disease vector Many organic farmers have learned about the benefits of 5 (have) bats nearby to help manage the amount of pests that show up without pesticides. One brown bat - about 6size of a human thumb - can consume about 600 mosquitoes and other unwanted insects within an hour. They make for a fantastic, almost essential 7 (add) to pest management on any farm.

Even large government organizations have realized the economic benefits of bats. The United States Geological Survey estimates that bat contributions8pest management save the country at9 (little) 3.7 billion dollars per year. Without them, we would likely experience a dramatic drop in food production, which would eventually make10(it) way into our weekly grocery bills.

Most Americans love Chinese food. However, the Chinese food served in most American restaurants is very different from the authentic cuisine enjoyed daily by people living in China. 1Then many Chinese immigrants had trouble landing a job in America. To make a living, some of them opened restaurants. Over these years, Chinese cuisine has been adapted to reflect Western influences.

2The Chinese food found in Western restaurants is mainly cooked through frying. Many dishes are cooked using various frying methods. However, traditional Chinese food is rarely cooked through frying. Instead, methods such as baking, steaming, boiling and fermenting (發(fā)酵) are more commonly used.

Another big difference between authentic and westernized Chinese food is the ingredients used. 3 Some ingredients — like carrots, onions and tomatoes — are not often used in authentic Chinese cooking. In addition, while you can find some Western cuisines that use strange meats — like pig ears — most Western cultures are pretty conservative about the meats they consume. Authentic Chinese food, in contrast, uses a wider variety of protein sources, including tofu, snake, chicken feet, duck blood and many more that Westerners generally wouldn’t choose to eat.

4Sweet and Sour Chicken, for example, has no equivalent(同等物)in traditional Chinese cuisine. Similarly, the fortune cookie is a completely American invention.

Indeed, there are numerous differences between authentic and westernized Chinese cuisine, but Western palates (味覺(jué)) adapt to new flavors easily. 5

A.The history of westernized Chinese food started in the mid-1800s.

B.Westernized Chinese food features vegetables that are common in Western cuisines.

C.There are so many regions of China, and they all prepare their dishes a little bit differently.

D.So it may only be a matter of time before authentic Chinese food becomes popular in America.

E.Many of the most popular Chinese dishes in the West are not served in Chinese restaurants at all.

F.Deep frying food is quick, which is why you can usually get your Chinese food in just a few minutes.

G.One of the main differences between authentic and westernized Chinese food lies in cooking methods.
