Then I throw it into a pail(桶) of cold water to temper it. Then I 11 it again and hammer it some more. And this I do until it is finished."

"But sometimes I find a piece of iron that won't 12 under this treatment. The heat and the hammering and the cold water are 13for it. I don't know why it fails in the 14 , but I know it will never make a good horseshoe."

1.C耳關(guān)系后文so much affliction should pass o-ver you我們知道,因?yàn)榛酵接龅搅撕芏嗦闊┦虑,因此那個(gè)人同情他。

4.A God's help and guidance與空后的內(nèi)容有轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系。

6.B聯(lián)系空后的he had thought the same ques?tion before我們知道,那個(gè)人沒(méi)有立刻回答,很顯然他以前也思考過(guò)這個(gè)問(wèn)題。

因此用do with最合適。think of"評(píng)價(jià);考慮";make with "用.... 制造";get from"從……得到"。

9.B聯(lián)系空前的until it is red我們知道,繼續(xù)加熱鐵就開(kāi)始發(fā)白。

10.B聯(lián)系空后的as I know it should be shaped 我們可以得出答案。

11.A聯(lián)系空后的hammer it some more我們知道,在回火后繼續(xù)給鐵加溫,然后錘煉。

12.B聯(lián)系空后的under this treatment我們知道,有些鐵忍受不了這樣的處理stand up意思是"忍受",其他選項(xiàng)中,stand out"突出"; stand by "站在一旁";stand in "當(dāng)替身;代替"。

situa?tion"情形;境遇";state"狀態(tài)"。

point out"指出";make out"說(shuō)明;理解";find out"弄清楚"。

Then I throw it into a pail of cold water to temper it我們可以得出答案。

17.B be good for為固定搭配,意思是"擔(dān)當(dāng)?shù)闷?。

19.A he can bring me to what I should be是鐵匠的希望,因此用if only,意思是"要是…… 就好了" .only if "只有";in case"以防"。

A super drug that could remove Alzheimer's(癡呆癥) ,heart disease and diabetes(糖屎病) and help people live to 100 is being developed by scientists. Their research is based on the iden?tification of three genes that improve long and healthy lives and prevent diseases of aging. Medi?cally controlling the proteins made by the " longevity genes" will allow millions to live longer, predicts Nir Barzilai.

Those people whose DNA strongly features the three genes are 80 percent less likely to de?velop Alzheimer's. The genes also fight against the deadly impact of smoking, bad diet, obesity and lack of exercise.

Already, several laboratories are working on a pill to imitate the benefits of the genes and Dr Barzilai thinks it could be tested within three years. The pill could remove some diseases that damage the old people. "The advantage of finding a gene that involves longevity is that we can develop a drug that will imitate exactly what this gene is doing," he said. "The biology we're trying to uncover is that if we can imitate that, long life can be really terrific."

Of the three longevity genes, two increase the production of so-called good cholesterol(膽固醇) ,which reduces the risk of heart disease. The third prevents diabetes. They were discov?ered by Dr Barzilai's team while studying the DNA of 500 Ashkenazi Jews with an average age of 100. The chances of living that long are one in 10,000 but the study group―which shared relatively few common ancestors―was 20 times more likely to hit the century. Dr Barzilai said, "Thirty percent of them were overweight and 30 percent smoked two packs of cigarettes a day for more than 40 years, however they could still live to 100."

But Andrew Ketteringham, of the Alzheimer's Society, said. " Alzheimer's disease, a most common disease, is likely to be caused by a combination of genetic disposition(遺傳傾向) ,lifes?tyle and life events. Many genes are probably involved.”

A.longevity genes cannot help reduce diseases

B.the study group is all from the same family

C.good habits have no effects on the health of people

D.the longevity genes may protect the people from the harm of bad habits

(   ) 4. What is Andrew Ketteringham's attitude toward the study?

One Saturday morning after breakfast, I returned to my dormitory and saw the house parent chasing the beautiful butterflies, hundreds of which lived in the bushes around the orphanage. I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful creatures, one after another, and then took them from the net and stuck straight pins through their head and wings, pinning them onto a heavy cardboard sheet.

How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. When the house parent went inside to answer the phone, I walked up to the cardboard and looked at the butterfly that he had just pinned to the large paper. It was still moving about, so I reached down and touched it on the wing, causing one of the pins to fall out. It started flying around and around, trying to get away but it was still pinned by one wing with another straight pin. Finally its wing broke off and the butterfly fell to the ground, still trembling. I tried to let it fly away before the house parent came back. But I failed.

When the house parent came back,he was angry with me though I didn't admit doing any?thing. He picked up the cardboard paper and started hitting me on the head. There were all kinds of butterfly pieces going everywhere. He threw the cardboard down on the ground and told me to pick it up and put it in the garbage can inside the back room of the dormitory and then he left. I sat there in the dirt for the longest time trying to fit all the butterfly pieces back together so I could bury them whole, but it was too hard to do. So I prayed for them and put them in an old torn-up shoebox and I buried them in the ground near the blackberry bushes.

Every year when the butterflies would return to the orphanage and try to land on me,I would try and shoo them away because they did not know that the orphanage was a bad place to live and a very bad place to die.

(   ) 1. Why didn't the butterfly that the writer wanted to set free fly away?

A.The house parent doubted the writer.

B.The writer admitted trying to set the butterfly free.

C.All the butterflies flew away thanks to the writer's help.

D.The writer put all the dead butterflies in the garbage can.

(   ) 3. The writer tried his best to fit all the butterfly pieces back together in order to

    A. save them   B. make the house parent angry

   C. be proud of himself   D. bury the butterflies whole

(   ) 4. What does the underlined phrase "shoo them away" in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Drive them away.   B. Play with them.

   C. Bury them.   D. Catch them one after another.

Latin America and other poor regions of the world will bear the impact(影響) of climate change, a top official from the organization that shared this year's Nobel Peace Prize said.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ,a UN network of scientists, was awarded the prize along with former US Vice President AI Gore for their work warning the pub?lic of the peril of global warming.

"The results of the IPCC show very clearly the impact of climate change will be much seve?rer for the poorest groups and Latin America is included in that”,said IPCC vice chairman Mo?han Munasinghe of Sri Lanka.
